In Europe, China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative primarily interacts with the institutional and physical landscape of the ‘shared neighbourhood’ between Russia and the European Union (EU). Norms and institutions in these ‘borderland’ states reflect an institutional ambiguity between the Eurasian and EU brands of market integration. In this chapter, the structures of economic governance in this region and their interaction with OBOR are examined from institutional and infrastructural perspectives. It is argued that OBOR is incompatible with current trends of European economic governance. In Ukraine and the 16+1 states, the interplay between Chinese state-controlled entities and oligarchic elites deconstructs formal norms and institutions and reinforces informal structures. Instability in the borderlands increases, while infrastructure investments extend the shadowy character of OBOR-induced practices into the future.

Hereby paper is dedicated to the issue of Brexit in the context of liberal theory of international relations, mainly by adoption of the qualitative method of textual examination of selected works, devoted to the abovementioned paradigm. The hypothesis of this article is a statement that liberal approach has a limited applicability to description of community disintegration mechanisms, including Brexit as their unquestionable syndrome. Existing theories of European integration, of which liberalism is one of the most influential theoretical schemes, reveal several malfunctions in exploration of Union’s decomposition processes, however, on the other hand, some of their specific components still remain valid. The above issue exposes a demand for investigating new tools and researching methods to scrutinize current trends in the European Union that would allow to review the present state of this organization in a more adequate manner.

Abstract:The regions–cohesion nexus focuses on how much people and place “prosperity” cannot be readily distinguished but are intimately connected. After reviewing some older sources on this logic, the article examines the current status of social cohesion within the European Union and what the future might hold depending on how much a crucial balance between global competitiveness and social cohesion is restored as the centerpiece of the supranational union. Current trends point in different directions, so critical choices will have to be made if the European Union as a whole is to survive and prosper. The income and fiscal divides between East and West and North and South should be the primary focus for rehabilitating the regions–cohesion nexus.

Investing any resources and energy in integration policies today could contribute to making the European Union a more prosperous, cohesive, and inclusive place for society. However, notwithstanding the efforts made, third-country nationals continue to fare worse than domestic citizens in terms of employment, education, and social inclusion outcomes. The article examines and subsequently reviews various trends in integrating foreigners (primarily third-countries nationals and asylum seekers) on social and economic level after the outbreak of migrant and refugee crisis in 2015 until the present day. Our research suggests that the concerned group of immigrants continue to face barriers in the education system, on the labour market, and in accessing decent housing and adequate health care. All of the aforementioned aspects have become the main focus of all parties involved. Through funding, initiatives, and specific measures undertaken by both the EU and Member States with NGOs strengthen and support integration across key policy areas, albeit deficiencies are still observed.

The article analyzes the interaction between central phenomena of the science of international relations such as the balance of power and international institutions on the example of the development of the European Union (EU) and Russia-EU relations in a changing global context, which was catalyzed by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. The change in the balance of power and its significance in the development of institutions of cooperation at the regional and global levels leads, in the author’s opinion, to the necessity to reassess the possibilities of institutional interaction and the stability of institutions as such. After the end of the Cold War, relations between Russia and the EU developed, within the framework of the author’s main theoretical paradigm, as part of attempts to include Russia in the balance of power underlying European integration. Current trends point to a relative decrease of the importance of this problem in the context of realizing the main interests of Russia and the leading EU states, which in the long term may allow them to move towards a more stable common European order. The new order would be less dependent on the actual bilateral relations between Russia and the European Union, but more dependent on the interests of both actors in a wide global environment.
