Objective: To evaluate salivary GPx-1 gene polymorphism in pregnant women suffering from blighted ovum. Method: In this case-control study, 34 blighted ovum patients and 34 healthy controls were studied. Genomic DNA was extracted from the saliva. The genotypes were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP-PCR) technique. Mad Calc (version 12.1) was used for statistical analysis. Result: The frequency of CC, CT, and TT genotypes of GPx-1 gene were 41%, 44% and 14%, respectively in blighted ovum patients and in healthy volunteers were 44%, 47%, and 8.82-9%, respectively. After statistical analysis, the study showed no significant association between this polymorphism and blighted ovum (with p = 0.63). Conclusion: These results indicated no significant association between GPx-1 (Pro198Leu) polymorphism and blighted ovum. However, further research is required to clarify the role of gene polymorphism in blighted ovum. Aim: The study aimed to estimate oxidative role of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on the liver in wheat milling workers. Materials and Methods: Case-control study was conducted to compare between the levels of AFB1/albumin (AFB1/alb), liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT, and ALP), P53, MDA, GST, SOD, zinc and vitamin C in 35 wheat milling workers and 40 control subjects. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, P53, MDA, GST and SOD in workers were significantly elevated compared to their controls. In the milling workers, there were significant correlations between MDA levels and the levels of AST, GGT, and P53, while, P53 was inversely correlated with GST and SOD activities. There were significant correlations between Zn levels and GGT, GST and SOD activities, between vitamin C and GST activities, and vitamin C inversely correlated with MDA. Conclusion: The present study concluded that the oxidative stress of AFB1 elevated the MDA and the liver enzymes in wheat milling workers. GST has a crucial role in the detoxification of aflatoxin and SOD as a scavenger antioxidant increased in the workers to overcome the oxidative toxic effects of AFB1 on the liver of the workers, and roles of Zn and vitamin C were significant in activation of these processes.

Introduction: Opioid addiction (OA) is a neurologically life-threatening challenge associated with socioeconomic and health concerns for individuals and society. The addictive drugs trigger neuromodulators and neurotransmitters through the opioid receptors and corresponding endogenous peptide ligands. In addition, drug addiction is reportedly related to the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) encoding gene and its variants. According to the role of the rs648893 polymorphism of the OPRM1 gene in numerous disorders, it has been suggested as a candidate associated with drug addiction. The present case-control study was conducted to evaluate the role of OPRM1 rs648893 polymorphism in the OA risk. Methods: To this end, the rs648893 polymorphism was genotyped by tetra amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction among 160 Iranian subjects consisting of 105 OA cases and 155 controls. Results: According to our findings, there was no significant association between OA and the OPRM1 rs648893 gene polymorphism. Moreover, a marginally insignificant difference was found between OA cases and controls in accordance with the allelic frequencies (P=0.05) Conclusion: In general, our results reported no association between OPRM1 rs648893 gene polymorphism and OA although further research among various ethnicities with larger sample sizes is needed to draw a definite conclusion on the association of rs648893 polymorphism and other OPRM1 intronic variants with opioid and other addictions.

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are major intracellular antioxidants, which, impaired in their function, are involved in the progress of schizophrenia (SCZ). The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the association between the polymorphism of glutathione S-transferases M1 (GSTM1), T1 (GSTT1), the glutathione S-transferase P1 gene (GSTP1) and SCZ. We isolated genomic DNA from peripheral blood of 93 individuals with SCZ and 99 healthy control subjects' genotypes analyzing them for GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 using polymerase chain reaction. The analysis of the gene–gene interaction between GSTs indicated that the magnitude of the association was greater for the combined AG/GSTT1 & GSTM1 genotypes (OR = 2.51; 95% CI: 1.13–5.63, P = 0.02). The AG and combined AG + GG genotypes of GSTP1 increased the risk of SCZ (OR = 1.83; 95% CI: 0.94–3.75 and OR = 1.71; 95% CI: 0.92–3.19, respectively). The genotypes of GSTT/NULL, NULL/GSTM and NULL/NULL increased the risk of SCZ (OR = 2.05; 95% CI: 0.9–4.74; OR = 2.0; 95% CI: 1.68–2.31; and OR = 1.8; 95% CI: 0.57–2.46, respectively). The present study supports previous data that suggest that impairment in the function of GSTs genes may increase the risk of SCZ.
