The study was carried out in the Paundi Khola watershed, Lamjung district, with the objective of evaluating the indigenous knowledge of terrace management. Various biophysical practices and land husbandry practices were recorded through field observation. A questionnaire survey and group discussions were also undertaken to acquire relevant information. It was found that terrace width and riser height correlated with slope angle negatively and positively, respectively. Outward-sloped terraces were common in the higher slope classes. Bund plantation was rarely observed in the irrigated fields. Paddy was the preferred crop wherever sufficient water was available. Paddy cultivation on unstable slopes without proper irrigation and drainage systems was the usual cause of slumping. Despite the failure of terraces or slopes in areas with deep-seated slides, farmers continued paddy cultivation by temporarily supporting and stabilizing the terraces until this was no longer feasible and major slope failure occurred. Gradual replacement of paddy by other more appropriate upland crops may sort out this problem to some extent. Key words: Terraces, watershed management, slope failure, bund plantation, slumping Himalayan Journal of Sciences 2(3): 33-36, 2004

Many slope areas in Malaysia whether it is man made or natural slope are particularly vulnerable to soil erosion and shallow failures due to the increasing of soil moisture and porewater pressure. This study will determined the active root zone of the tree near the toe of the slope which suctions have been generated within this section. Hence, the effect it only focusing on hydrological aspect with soil moisture pattern near vicinity of the tree. The mechanical aspect of tree root such as tensile strength and bonding between root and soil which can led to increasing soil strength are assumed negligible in this study. From preliminary result of field monitoring show significant increase of total suction at near vicinity of tree which can lead to stability analysis on slope. The comparison of FOS will be presented between at the toe of slope with and without the tree. Furthermore, for slope studies area the reresult indicates that tree induced suction can be related to cause the factor of safety against slope failure improve up to 33.07%.

Twenty-five rockslides in sedimentary strata of the Skeena Mountains in north-central British Columbia are concentrated along a distinct belt approximately 30 km wide. Four slides belong to a "shallow" type, 21 to a "deep" slide type. Regional structural trend, deformation, and lithological heterogeneity seem to control distribution and direction of slip of these rockslides. Slopes oriented parallel to the structural trend and made up of heterogeneous conglomerate, sandstone, shale successions are more likely to fail than others.

Night tourism development comes up as an innovative strategy for tourism development in this current intense competition. There are four main elements in night tourism, namely economic, social, environmental, and night atmosphere. Berastagi is the most popular tourist destination in Karo Regency, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia, which already have night tourism destination but unfortunately undeveloped yet. Night tourism development in Berastagi must be with the local wisdom approach to maximize its benefit. Karonese as the majority ethnic of the local community in this area potential to be developed on its night tourism. This paper only analyzes the environmental and night atmosphere aspects in Berastagi’s night tourism, which based on local wisdom. Qualitative primary data from field observation and depth interview results have been analyzed by using the descriptive method. The study shows that involving local wisdom in developing the environment and night atmosphere can give the typical identity for the night tourism in Berastagi.Night Tourism
