In secondary school, where students begin to be more interested in physics, chemistry and biology, it is an important issue how their interests are in terms of all three subject areas according to grade levels. The aim of this study was to examine and evaluate the interest of secondary school students in the concepts of physics, chemistry and biology taught in science classes by grade level. The participants included 251 students enrolled in 16 different classrooms in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades in a boarding secondary school located in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. The study was carried out as a developmental study in single screening model. For compliance with the research pattern, study data were collected with a questionnaire consisting of four open-ended questions, and the questionnaire was given to the students in order to find out their thoughts on the matter under consideration. In addition, the students were asked to draw a picture depicting the place and importance of science in their life and to explain their drawings briefly in writing. The data obtained from the open-ended questionnaire and drawings were analyzed through content analysis. The collected data were classified in categories and themes, and matrices were generated accordingly. In addition, frequency and percentage analysis was performed. As a result, science was found to be mostly associated with concepts regarding biology discipline by the students. Also, overall interest level was found to be higher with physics and biology topics at all grade levels studied here. The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of KCPE as a predictor of KCSE scores among public secondary school students in Kisii central Sub-county, Kenya. This study was guided by a conceptual framework where KCPE was the independent variable and KCSE the dependent variable. It adopted Correlational and Ex-post-facto research designs. The study population was 3,897 KCSE candidates from 55 public secondary schools. Stratified random sampling based on school type and size was used to select 16 public secondary schools for the study. Saturated sampling was employed to include all KCSE candidates whose KCPE marks were available in each sampled school, yielding a sample of 1,391 students.  Data used included 2006 KCPE scores and 2010 KCSE scores of the same students under study. Data was collected using a researcher made pro forma. It was analyzed quantitatively using correlations and regression analyses. Results showed a strong positive Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r=0.693; n=1391; p < 0.05) between KCPE and KCSE scores. It recommended that; KCPE should continue to be used as selection tool for secondary school admission and school evaluation using KCSE examination scores should be based on students’ past KCPE scores.

This study aimed at finding the effect of self control (SC) on deviant behavior (DB) of Students. The approach of the study was quantitative. Causal comparative research design was used to investigate the effect of self control on students’ deviance. Students (8940) of grade 9th and 10th of all public schools of Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) constituted the population of this study. Data were collected from 470 students of Mirpur, AJK. Out of them there were 291 males and 179 were females. Two scales, SC Scale originally developed by Grasmick et al., (1993) and Normative Deviance Scale by Vazsonyi et al., (2001) were adapted to measure the SC and DB of the students respectively. Descriptive statistics, t-test and linear regression were applied to analyze the data. Results of the study found a low level of SC and high level of DB among the secondary school students. Female were more SC led as compared to the males whereas male showed more DB than females. Regression analysis showed that SC has significant positive effect on the DB and it brings 49.8% variability in the DB of the secondary school students. It was recommended that SC related activities should be added into the curriculum at primary level as this is the best age for the development of SC into the students. Workshops and seminars should be held at Secondary Schools to bring awareness on the benefits of SC for the teachers and students.

The purpose of this study is to indicate primary school students' views on changes in the socioeconomic and cultural structures of population, which stem from touristic activities. The ffects of variables on these views will be tested in the study. 676 primary school students of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in Safranbolu, Karabük participated in the study. Data were collected by 5-point Likert type questionnaire developed by Özüpekçe (2008). Results mirrored that students' views on touristic activities were generally positive. It was also seen that students' views differed significantly according to the variables such as school's geographic position, students' grades, and families' economic status.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of guidance and counseling programme on academic performance of secondary school students in Maiduguri metropolitan council. An ex post facto and survey research design was adopted in this study. Data was collected through administration of questionnaires to the selected respondents. The collected data was then processed and analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage. The study established the following findings: Secondary schools in the study area differed in the number of guidance and counseling services that they had implemented. Teacher counselors had little training in guidance and counseling. Stakeholders adequately supported guidance and counseling programme in the schools. Students were aware of the role and importance of career counseling in their schools (89.39%). Guidance and counseling programme has a positive impact on the academic performance of students. Based on these study findings, the following recommendations were made: There is need for the teacher counselors to implement all the services required for guidance and counseling and improve the level of training of teacher counselors in guidance and counseling. Guidance and counseling programme should be strengthened in order to improve the academic performance of secondary schools in the area.

This study was carried out to reveal the mental models of the secondary school students from different grade levels regarding the concept of space. At the same time, within the context of the study, it was aimed to determine the factors playing a role in the construction of their concepts of space. The study employed the special case study design, one of the descriptive methods. The study was conducted in the spring term of the 2016-2017 school year and the sampling of the study is comprised of the students attending a private secondary school in a city located in the western region of Turkey. In the study, a data collection tool including four open-ended questions developed by the researchers to determine the students’ mental models of the “space” was used. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical techniques. The findings of the study have revealed that the students mostly associate the concept of the space with the concepts of emptiness (53 students), infinity (50 students), planet (48 students) and star (28 students). These findings are also supported by the students’ drawings and the Celestial Bodies Mental Model was found to be the model most frequently used by the students.

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between the responses to the digital and the active version of Angry Birds . Participants of this study were comprised of 26 secondary school students who enrolled in a state or a private school. The data for the study were collected during the 2012-2013 school years by using a three question semi-structured interview. The responses to the interviews were analyzed with the qualitative method of content analysis. 6 categories and 31 codes were emerged from the responses of the students. According to responses of the students, entertainment was the most cited category and mostly referred to active games. Negative emotions were controllable in the active game play even students found it more challenging. This study has implications to design game based educational programs.

Aim: Urinary incontinence is an important problem that can arise due to neurogenic or functional reasons and can negatively affect the psychological, social and personality development of children. This study was conducted in Eskişehir province, on secondary school students in order to determine the prevalence and nature of urinary incontinence at night and/or daytime. Methods: The study universe included all secondary school students attending state elementary schools in the city center of Eskişehir (N=34.000). Ethics Committee and Provincial Directorate of National Education approval was obtained before conducting the study, which was supported by Eskişehir Osmangazi University Scientific Research Projects Commission (2017-1876) . A data collection form prepared by the researchers, and a consent form were delivered in sealed envelope to the parents via the students. The study data were collected between 09.05.2018-30.05.2018. Only volunteers were included in the study. 6957 questionnaires which have been fully completed from the 7370 surveys have been taken into consideration. The statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS soft ware package. Results: The number of children found to have urinary incontinence was determined to be 215 (3.1%). It has been determined that 33 children (0.5%) have urinary incontinence only at daytime, 61 children (0.9%) have urinary incontinence both at night and daytime, and 121 children (1.7%) have urinary incontinence only at night. It was observed that 56% of the children suffering from urinary incontinence had not applied to any health institution for treatment before. Conclusions: Children and families with urinary incontinence need medical information and support to cover the cause of the problem and suggestions for solutions. Accompanying pathologies in cases to be detected can be determined in the early period by means of school screenings and medical evaluation and support can prevent the psychosocial and personality development of children from being adversely affected.

This research aims to examine the metaphors on the concepts of reading and listening of the secondary school students and is based on phenomenology. 390 randomly selected secondary school students participated in this study in the 2016&ndash;2017 academic year in Turkey. The study includes all the grades (5, 6, 7, &amp; 8th) at the secondary school level. &ldquo;Reading is like ..................., because .....................&rdquo;, &ldquo;Listening is like ..............., because ..................&rdquo; were the two sentences given to the students and they were asked to fill in the blanks. The data were analyzed by the content analysis. The students created 385 metaphors about the concept of reading and 329 metaphors about the concept of listening. Metaphors on the concept of reading were divided into 11 categories: A source of knowledge/learning, development, necessity, imagination, life, finding peace, sincerity, boredom/suffocation, eternity, guidance, enjoyment. Metaphors on the concept of listening were divided into 9 categories: A source of knowledge/learning, necessity, imagination, life, finding peace, communication, boredom, guidance, enjoyment. In this research, metaphors were used to reveal the thoughts of secondary school students on the concepts of reading and listening.

Biology course can be difficult for students at times as it includes a lot of concepts and a relatively intense content. At this point, students’ attitude towards biology and biology course is highly important because having developed a positive attitude would significantly affect behavior. In other words, those students who have developed a positive attitude towards biology and biology course are expected to be more interested in class, more enthusiastic for learning, and as a result more successful. In this research, the gender and grade level variables as well as the pet-keeping variable were examined. The effects of these variables on the attitudes of secondary school students towards biology and biology course were examined by MANOVA. The sample of the research, which was designed in a relational survey model, consisted of 1047 secondary school students. In the collection of data, “Secondary School Students’ Attitude towards Biology and Biology Course Scale” was used. It was concluded that students who keep a pet have a more affirmative attitude. It was determined that female students have a more affirmative attitude compared to male students and 9th graders have a more affirmative attitude compared to students in other grade levels. Finally, it has been discussed why female students', pet keeping students' and lower grade students' attitudes towards biology and biology course are more affirmative, and suggestions for increasing students' attitudes have been developed.
