A study on nutrient uptake by different legume crops was carried out at two locations–one at Bangladesh Agricultural University farm Mymensingh and another at Regional Agricultural Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Jamalpur. The objective was to find out the optimum concentrations of different nutrient elements and its uptake by legume crops in a Wheat-Legume-T. Aman cropping pattern. The uptake of different elements was markedly varied by legume crops at both the locations in two consecutive years of the study. It was also noticed that cowpea removed the highest quantity of nutrient elements from the soils in the treated plots compared to mungbean and blackgram. Besides, stover received the maximum contents of potassium followed by nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur which was significantly different over legume seeds. Keywords: Nutrient uptake; legume crops. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is the most important and ancient pulse crop being traditionally grown during rabi season and cultivated mainly in semi-arid regions. The content of iron and zinc in the soil of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) is below the critical level. A field experiment to study the effect of iron and zinc nutrition on growth, yield and nutrient uptake by chickpea conducted in the vertisols of the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Vijayapur during rabi 2017-18. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with ten treatments and three replications. The treatments included RPP (Recommended package of practice) and application of iron @ 2, 4 and 6 kg ha-1 and zinc @ 2, 3 and 4 kg ha-1 in combinations along with RPP (RDF (Recommended dose of fertilizer) @ 10:25:00:: N : P2O5 : K2O kg ha-1). The results of the experiment revealed that, the application of iron and zinc in combinations resulted in significant increase in growth, yield and nutrient uptake by chickpea over RPP alone. Among the different treatments RPP + 6 kg Fe ha-1 + 4 kg Zn ha-1 was resulted in the maximum test weight (28.28 g), seed (2065.4 kg ha-1) and straw (1734.9 kg ha-1) yield. Similarly, higher protein content, uptake of nutrients (Fe and Zn) by the crop and residual iron and zinc status in soil were recorded due to the application of RPP + 6 kg Fe ha-1 + 4 kg Zn ha-1. These results were at par with the application of RPP + 6 kg Fe ha-1 + 3 kg Zn ha-1 and lower values were recorded in the treatment that received RPP alone. Finally it could be concluded that the application of fertilizers containing iron and zinc helpeds to improve crop yield, protein content and nutrient uptake by chickpea crop and residual soil fertility in terms of iron and zinc.

Soil acidic conditions and the decline in soil fertility are among the critical factors that constraint higher crop productivity in the Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain (OHPP), Bangladesh. The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of lime and manure on soil fertility, nutrients and yields of wheat, mungbean and rice. Experiments were done at Agricultural Research Station (ARS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) farm and farmer field over two consecutive years with the cropping pattern, namely wheat-mungbean-transplanted (T.) aman rice/monsoon rice. The varieties used were Bijoy for wheat, BARI mung6 for mungbean and Bina dhan7 for T. aman rice. There were nine treatment combinations with three lime levels (0, 1 and 2 ton dololime ha-1) and three manure treatments (poultry manure, farmyard manure and no manure) with three replications. The rate of poultry manure was 3 t ha-1 and that of farmyard manure was 5 t ha-1. Nutrients from manure sources were supplemented with chemical fertilizers to adjust recommended dose. Lime was added to the first crop for entire two crop cycles and manures were applied to the first crop of each crop cycle. Soil pH increased by 0.5-1.11 units, the higher values were observed with higher rates of lime application. Soil organic matter (SOM) increased slightly due to manure treatment. Soil phosphorus availability increased, zinc and boron availability decreased, but the potassium and sulphur availability remained almost unchanged after liming. Application of lime and manure had significant positive effect on the yield of wheat, and their positive residual effects on mungbean and T. aman rice. The effect of 1 t lime ha-1 was comparable with that of 2 t lime ha-1. Between two manures, poultry manure performed better than FYM on crop yields. The trend of plant nutrient uptake by wheat, mungbean and rice followed the trend of these crops yield increase, i.e., crops that were able to uptake more nutrients shown higher yields. The treatment combinations with 1 t ha-1 lime and 3 t ha-1 poultry manure produced an average 35-55% yield benefit over control for the first crop (wheat) and 41-43% yield benefit for the third crop (T. aman rice). This study suggests that dololime @ 1 t ha-1 coupled with poultry manure @ 3 t ha-1 or FYM @ 5 t ha-1 would be an efficient practice for better soil acidic condition, soil fertility and productivity of crops in the Himalayan piedmont soil of Bangladesh.

Diversity of coconut germplasm being conserved at different Regional and Sub-stations of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) was estimated during 2001-2002. Diversity indices (D2) ranged from 1068.96 to 171.93. Maximum diversity was observed between BARI Narikel-2 and Rahmatpur Yellow Dwarf. Genotypes of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore and BARI Narikel-2 were found morphologically similar. Population under conservation at Jamalpur and lshwardi stations were found close to BAR! Narikel-l. Similar relationships among the genotypes were reflected when they were grouped into several clusters. Out of six clusters, the members of cluster II were homogenous, while that of cluster IV showed heterogenicity.Key Words: Phenotypic diversity; coconut germplasm.DOI: 10.3329/bjar.v34i1.5749Bangladesh J. The experiment was carried out at the research field of Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Dinajpur during Mid December to end of November for two consecutive years (2017-18 and 2018-19) to develop an economically sustainable and profitable cropping pattern over existing pattern. Three alternate cropping patterns Tomato-T. Aus-T. Aman, Tomato-Summer onion-T. Aman, Tomato-Indian Spinach-T. Aman were introduced against the existing cropping pattern Tomato–Fallow–T. Aman rice. The experiment was carried out in RCB design with three replications. The highest REY (35.91 t/ha) was recorded from the cropping pattern Tomato-Indian Spinach-T. Aman followed by Tomato-Summer onion-T. Aman (31.26 t/ha) and Tomato-T. Aus-T. Aman (29.04 t/ha). The lowest REY (24.48 t/ha) was obtained from the cropping pattern Tomato-Fallow-T. Aman (Farmers practice). The gross return and gross margin were higher in the alternate cropping patterns compared to existing cropping pattern due to additional yield of T. Aus rice, Summer Onion and Indian Spinach. Therefore, farmers in Dinajpur region of Bangladesh could follow alternate cropping pattern in their medium high land where lands remain fallow after harvesting of Tomato for higher crop productivity and profitability.

The initial growth of turmeric is rather slow and takes about 4-5 months to cover the inter space. Therefore, the available space between the rows of turmeric could be effectively utilized by growing short duration crops like, vegetables, cereals etc. Hence, it is worthwhile to explore the possibilities of growing compatible crops with turmeric. With this background the experiment on effect of intercrops on growth and yield of turmeric was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Bhavanisagar. Among the different intercrops, turmeric with cowpea recorded the maximum fresh rhizome yield per hectare (30.78 t ha-1) while turmeric + bhendi registered the maximum B:C ratio (2.68:1). Monocropping of turmeric recorded the lowest B:C ratio (1.67:1) among all the treatments.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif, 2005 at Agricultural Research station, Devihosur, Haveri, Karnataka to assess the progress of powdery mildew at different time interval of sowing dates. Totally 20 different dates of sowings were imposed in the experiment at an interval of 10 days. The crop sown on last week of May to mid of June recorded minimum disease severity compared to rest of the date of sowings. This clearly indicated that crop sown during this period suffers less, which may be due to low inoculum potential, whereas late sown crop suffers more because of the readily available inoculum in the early sown crops. Low disease severity in last week of May to mid of June sowing may be attributed to the non-congenial weather factors for the development of the disease.

Variations in growth and yield of three hyacinth bean genotypes collected from Sitakundu of Chittagong, were investigated at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Pahartali, Chittagong during November 2011 to March 2012, where BARI Seem-4 was used as standard control. The minimum number of days for pod formation (54 days) was recorded in BARI Seem-4, while the maximum was in DLP 002 (62 days). The highest number of pods (324) per plant was obtained from DLP 001 followed by DLP 003 (212.33) and the lowest (148.33) was obtained from BARI Seem-4. The maximum weight (12.61 g) of single pod was observed in DLP 003, which is close to that of DLP 002 (12.23 g). The minimum weight of single pod (7.08g) was however observed in DLP 001. Weight of 100-green seed (117.17 g) was maximum in DLP 002, while that of DLP 001 was the minimum (85.90 g).The maximum green seed (61.86 %) was found in DLP 003 and the minimum was in DLP 001 (47.89 %). DLP 003 produced the highest pod yield (26.77 t/ha) which was followed by DLP 001 (22.94 t/ha), while BARI Seem-4 produced the lowest (17.43 t/ha), which is close to that of DLP 002 (19.57 t/ha).The Agriculturists 2014; 12(2) 01-05

Field experiments were conducted from 2015-16 to 2017-18 on a Typic Rhodustalfs (Alfisol) soils of Telangana at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Palem, Nagarkurnool, Southern Telangana Zone, India to validate targeted yield based fertilizer prescription equations which developed for hybrid castor by adopting eight treatments viz., Blanket recommendation (100% RDF:80:40:30 kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha-1), Blanket+5 t ha-1 of vermin-compost (VC), STCR-Target yield with NPK alone at 25q ha-1, STCR-Target yield with IPNS at 25q ha-1, STCR-Target yield with NPK alone at 30q ha-1, STCR-Target yield with IPNS at 30q ha-1, Farmer’s practice (40:20:0kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha-1) and Absolute control (without inorganic and organic fertilizers). The findings of these test verification trials clearly revealed that the percent achievement of the aimed yield target was within + 10 percent variation confirming the validity of the equations. Using STCR-NPK@25 and 30q ha-1 recorded significantly higher seed (20.74 and 22.30q ha-1) and stalk (24.63 and 26.36q ha-1) yield over blanket recommendation (19.40 and 23.13 q ha-1), while STCR-IPNS at 25 and 30 q ha-1recorde relatively higher seed (20.98 and 22.69q ha-1) and stalk (25.88 and 27.13q ha-1) yield over STCR-NPK alone treatments. The magnitude of built-up was higher with STCR-IPNS treatments as compared to STCR-NPK alone, blanket recommendations, farmer’s practice and absolute control.

Aim: To find out the optimum harvesting stage of high yielding rapeseed-mustard varieties to fit in rice based cropping pattern. Study Design: The field study was arranged following RCB (factorial) design with three replications. Place and Duration of the Study: Agronomy field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur (located between 24°34ʹ and 25°26ʹ North latitude and 89°40ʹ and 90°12ʹ East longitude), Bangladesh during 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. Methodology: Seeds of mustard varieties viz. BARI Sarisha-11, BARI Sarisha-14, BARI Sarisha-15, Binasarisha-4 & Tori-7 were sown in line maintaining 30cm spacing on 02 November, 2015 and 06 November, 2016. This varieties were harvested at four different harvesting stages viz. H1= Green stage of siliquae, H2= Pale yellow stage of siliquae, H3= Golden yellow stage of siliquae and H4= Full maturity stage of siliquae. Green stage of siliquae was determined just at seven to ten days after all flower droppings of crop while the pale and golden yellow stage of siliquae was determined when 40%-50% and 70%-80% bearing turned into light yellow and deep yellow in color respectively. Full maturity stage of siliqua was determined when lower bearing just brust out. Results: BARI Sarisha-14, BARI Sarisha-15 (B. campestris) and Binasarisha 4 (B. napus) may be harvested at pale yellow stage of siliquae at 73, 82 and 78 DAS (average of two years) considering 11.0% seed and 3.15% oil yield; 10.0% seed and 1.56% oil yield; 6.60% seed and 3.90% oil yield loss respectively than full maturity stage of siliquae. Conclusion: BARI Sarisha-14, BARI Sarisha-15 and Binasarisha 4 need to be sown within first week of November in districts named Mymensingh (located 24°15′ and 25°15′ N and 90°49′ E longitudes),  Jamalpur (located 24°34ʹ and 25°26ʹN latitude and 89°40ʹ and 90°12ʹ E longitude) and Tangail (located 24°01′ and 24°47′ N latitudes and 89°44′ and 90°18' E longitudes) and the crop should be harvested at pale yellow stage of siliquae (within 73-82 days period) sacrificing seed and oil yield loss to some extent to introduce HYVs of rapeseed-mustard in rice based cropping pattern.

An experiment was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari from September 2002 to February 2003 to find out the effect of mulching method (Mulching one month before planting, mulching just after planting and no mulching) and planting times (01 October, 16 October and 01 November) on the yield and yield attributes of tomato in hill slope. The highest yield (21.43 t/ha) was obtained from plant where mulch was given one month before planting. Among three planting times, the highest yield (15.27 t/ha) was obtained from 01 October planting. In case of combined effect, mulching one month before planting with 01 October planting produced the highest yield (28.06 t/ha) of tomato in hill slope.
