This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted to find out the teachers' opinion about teacher evaluation in undergraduate medical education at two government and three non-government medical colleges in Dhaka city by convenience sampling. 30 teachers were participated and they were from Assistant Professor to Professor Level. Teachers gave their opinion about potential use, facilities, barriers and factors affecting the implementation of teacher evaluation through in-depth interview. Majority of teachers opined that a well developed teacher evaluation system is a must in undergraduate medical education. It is strongly felt by the participant teachers that teacher evaluation has presently become very much essential against the backdrop of continuous changing of curriculum, technology, teaching styles, pattern of society, disease demography etc. Teachers agreed that it can improve teaching ability and protect students from incompetent teachers. Most of the teachers agreed about the necessity of student involvement in the teacher evaluation programme. Problem if arise can be resolved by implementing teacher evaluation with the help of a precise or proper guideline from policy level. Study recommended that teacher evaluation should start from undergraduate medical college. Study also mentioned that teachers' classroom performance and relationship with students should be used as parameters of teacher evaluation. In conclusion it can be said that without teacher evaluation there is no way for quality improvement of teacher and undergraduate medical education.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.6(1) 2015: 12-18

Background: Periodic students’ feedback ensures and enhances the effectiveness of the curriculum of medical subject. Objective: This study was designed to obtain students appraisal of the undergraduate pharmacology curriculum and teaching methodology. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology at Colonel Malek Medical College, Manikganj, Bangladesh from May to June, 2019 for a period of two months. Questionnaire-based data were collected from students of both sexes who had completed 3rd Professional examination. Likert Scale was applied to collect students’ feedback on pharmacology. Results: A total number of 40 students were recruited for this study of which 60.0% students were strongly agreed about organized teaching. About 47.5% students were agreed that the course was appropriate at their level and achieved their goals in Pharmacology. However, 55% of them strongly agreed that teacher provided clear constructive feedback during class. Total 60%, were agreed that the course improved their problem-solving skills. Overall, 55% students were agreed regarding their satisfaction on Pharmacology course delivery and conduction. Conclusion: In conclusion, periodic appraisal from students regarding evaluation of the student-centric undergraduate pharmacology curriculum is vital in developing efficient medical graduates. Background: The development of an ideal doctor-patient relationship requires empathy. Empathetic conversation aids in the formation of an open and trusting equation between doctor and patient. Furthermore, this leads to accurate diagnoses and more compliance to the advised treatment. In this manner, empathy helps in overall recovery of the patient and improves global functioning and generalised well-being. This study aims to make note of the fluctuation in empathy levels during medical education. Studies done in various countries have found factors such as curriculum, clinical rotations timing and gender to progressively influences empathy levels in students throughout their medical training. The recent trend of violence against healthcare professionals in India calls for an urgent action into the gap between doctors and patients communication. Empathy towards patients and attendants will reduce such untoward events. In this current context, we should improve empathy levels among the training doctors. As a first step, we should assess various factors affecting empathy among health care professionals. Method: This cross sectional study was done among undergraduates of a rural medical college in Northern Telangana during the time period of October to December 2019. Their empathy levels were assessed using Jefferson’s Scale for Empathy- Student version (JSE-S). Result: Of the 470 students surveyed, 227 were males and 243 females. Female students were having higher empathy among first year and second years (p<0.001). Empathy levels seem to decline from first year to second year following which the mean empathy remains similar throughout the remaining years in students of both sexes. There is no significant relation between mean empathy scores and choice of future speciality (p>0.05). Conclusion: Female undergraduate students are found to be more empathetic than their male counterparts. A fall in empathy scores from the first to second year of MBBS is seen, which is when students enter their clinical rotations. Targeted intervention at this time may go a long way in the creation of a new generation of more empathetic physicians. Hence, there is a need for evaluation of teaching and learning techniques in medical education. Further, there is a call for more research into the determinants of decline in empathy amongst medical professionals.

This descriptive type of cross sectional study was conducted to explore the use of AV aids in undergraduate medical education in 7 government & 5 non-government medical colleges of Bangladesh by convenient sampling. Sixty (60) lecture classes were observed to estimate the proportion of the uses of different AV aids & to identify the quality use of different types of AV aids by observation checklists. Views were also taken from 20 teachers regarding the quality use of different types of AV aids by open ended questions. Study revealed that 20% teachers used CB/WB, 15% used OHP and 65% used PPT. Most of the CB/WB & PPT users maintained the quality use of these media but not OHP. Readability and legibility of handwriting or text of all media were acceptable in 78% lectures but it was 33% in OHP lectures. Students' attention was also less in OHP. Regarding number of words per acetate sheet/slide, only 33% OHP lectures met the standard criteria & 72% PPT slides met this criterion. In open ended questions, 25% teachers choose CB/WB, 10% Choose OHP and 65% choose PPT. Study recommended that use of clean, multi-color and good quality chalk/marker & board/screen are essential for effective teaching learning session. Adequate lighting, AC lecture class/gallery, proper sound systems & training on different AV aids are also needed to standardize the quality use of AV aids in lecture classes.Medicine Today 2016 Vol.28(2): 48-51

Accreditation of undergraduate medical education has been practicing worldwide in developed and developing countries. Fundamental ideas of this program is to ensure incorporation of ongoing global developments, evidence based scientific study and maintenance of minimum basic standard in education for population health and safety. WHO and WFME have been addressing for global standards in medical education and global accreditation of medical institutes for long time. Worldwide many countries have been responded to this call of global accreditation of medical colleges and medical education with their own context and experiencing benefits This exploratory cross sectional study has been conducted during the period of july-2014 to june-2015 to explore the opinion from key informants of medical education and views from young medical graduates. Data were collected from twenty one in-depth interviewee. Key informants stressed the necessity of an autonomous constitutional national independent accreditation body, faculty development and teacher evaluation, basic minimum resources in all listed medical colleges. Study recommended to accelerate the activities to establish national accreditation body for undergraduate medical education which will make way to achieve global accreditation in Bangladesh in coming future.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.7(2) 2016: 9-16

Introduction: The pandemic of COVID-19 affected every single person in the world. This pandemic also affected the academics of medical and dental colleges of Nepal. In these conditions, the virtual study was used as an emergency measure during the COVID-19 period, with an adaptation to the “new normal” to deliver preclinical medical education. This has brought both challenges and opportunities to medical education. The objective of the study is to find out whether the anatomy virtual classes were helpful among the first and second year medical and dental students of a medical college. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 206 first and second-year medical and dental students of a medical college between 1st May 2021-31st May 2021 after getting the ethical clearance from the Institutional Review Committee (reference no. 0504202109). The convenient sampling was done. The data were analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 20 version. Point estimate at 95% Confidence Interval was calculated along with frequency and percentage for binary data. Results: Out of the total 206 students, 173 (84%) (78.99-89.01 at 95% Confidence Interval) found that virtual anatomy classes were not helpful for the study of the anatomy classes.  Conclusions: From the study, we conclude that more than half of the students found that virtual classes were not helpful for the study of anatomy classes. Students have difficulty in studying dissection, cadaveric, and embryological structures via virtual classes. Physical class is better for studying anatomy than virtual classes for medical and dental students.

Introduction: The role of teacher is crucial to a college’s/ university success. Teaching evaluation when done properly enhances teacher’s professional practice as well as aids in professional development. There is a clearer link between student learning standards and teacher preparation standards, as teaching evaluation is relevant to every segment of the educational system. This is a controversial area involving technical, psychological, political, ethical and educational complexities. The purpose of this study is to present qualities of a good teacher as are evaluated by Higher Education Commission (HEC) teaching evaluation survey. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Rehman Medical College, Peshawar. Period: April to October 2017. Methodology: The survey was conducted by quality enhancement cell. The senior faculty i.e assistant professor and above of respective subjects were evaluated by the students. The survey was done from year 1 to year 4 MBBS. The total number of responses for all subjects were 2190. Results: Year wise and subject wise analysis was done using ANOVA and chi-square tests. Both tests showed no difference between the perception of students year wise and subject wise. However, individual item analysis showed certain difference which were more due to the teachers’ influence on the students. The disagreement level for Biochemistry as compared to other subjects was consistently high which desires further probation. Conclusion: Although it’s a very difficult area and involves controversy. Individual to individual feedback can improve the situation. Regular professional development workshops will develop teachers professionally.

Abstract Background: The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has upended medical education. This pandemic has risen uncertainty over the start of the normal routine of studies in medical universities. Amidst the worldwide shortage of doctors, there is widespread dilemma and disagreement regarding the role of the medical students during this pandemic. Medical education is suspended and the students are barred from being direct medical providers unless there is a critical need for the additional healthcare workforce. Considering these facts we have done a survey amongst medical students of pre-final and final year to know and evaluate their opinion and outlook regarding their involvement in the hospital work at the time of the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic. Materials and Method: This is a cross-sectional study among the clinic going medical students of Government Doon Medical College Dehradun, India. It is used to know their opinion regarding their voluntary initiative to actively participate and usefulness in the hospital works while going through their classes and hospital postings. We have circulated a questionnaire among 385 medical students to know their mindset and formulate a plan to include them in the future clinical hospital works in case the pandemic situation worsens.Statistical analysis is performed using SPSS version 25. Chi-square test was used to evaluate the association between the two variables. A two-tailed p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Out of 294 respondents 62.2% had a high motivation to work in the hospital. This was synergized by the worldwide appreciation of doctors according to 88.8% of students. A sense of duty towards the patients was clear by the responses which surpassed the fear of the disease and the belief of being a better doctor (94.2%). Conclusion: The majority of medical students were highly motivated to be a part of the hospital workforce and help to fight this apocalyptic pandemic.

ObjectivesThe main objectives were to assess medical students’ opinions about e-learning in psychiatry undergraduate medical education, and to investigate a possible relationship between learning styles and preferences for learning modalities.MethodDuring the academic year 2009/2010, all 231 senior Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) medical students in their penultimate year of study were invited to answer a questionnaire that was posted online on Moodle, the RCSI virtual learning environment.ResultsIn all, 186 students responded to the questionnaire, a response rate of 80%. Significantly more students stated a preference for live psychiatry tutorials over e-learning lectures. Students considered flexible learning, having the option of viewing material again and the ability to learn at one’s own pace with e-learning lectures, to be more valuable than having faster and easier information retrieval.ConclusionStudents prefer traditional in-class studying, even when they are offered a rich e-learning environment. Understanding students’ learning styles has been identified as an important element for e-learning development, delivery and instruction, which can lead to improved student performance.
