Effects of drought and flooding on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) were carried out and compared. Plant growth parameters, biomass content, chlorophyll, ash and soil metal content were studied. The result showed that bean was 21.3cm, 21.8cm and 21.1cm for control, drought and flooding while groundnut recorded 19.9cm, 102.3cm and 18.6cm for control, drought and flooding respectively. Biomass composition recorded little or no variation in fresh weight of stem in bean while groundnut varies from 4.77g – 5.05g accordingly. Leaf recorded highest value of fresh weight to be 6.44g recorded in bean cultivated in drought soil with the least recorded to be 3.61 in the control and flooded soil for groundnut plant. The result of the study showed that drought and flooding had relatively positive effects on the growth properties of bean and groundnut as both plants were able to germinate and grow under both conditions. The effects of artificial aging and cryopreservation methods on the germination of seeds and embryonic axes of Phaseolus vulgaris and Arachis hypogaea , were studied. Aging and cryopreservation treatments in bean seeds not affect the germination percentage, reaching values not significantly different from control. Germination percentage was higher when isolated embryonic axes were studied. Aging treatments gave rise to larger bean seedlings than the controls and cryopreservation treatments affected the size depending on the explant used. In groundnut seeds, aging treatments and cryopreservation positively affected germination and vigor of seedlings, but embryonic axes from not rehydrated aging seeds not germinate. Undried groundnut seeds not survive cryopreservation, while the dried ones showed a germination behavior superior to the control. Embryonic axes tolerate immersion in liquid nitrogen but when droplet-vitrification was used, formed callus instead of seedlings. Electrolyte leakage was always higher in embryonic axes than in seeds, both in beans and groundnut, and not to have a significant effect, under the conditions studied, on germination and vigor of seedlings. The present study evidences the possibility of cryopreserving, by simple procedures, germplasm of beans and groundnut, and to verify the aging tolerance of the seeds and embryonic axes of these important species.

Haricot bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important cash crop and protein source for farmers in many parts of Ethiopia. However, its production is limited by phosphorus fertilizer. Therefore, field experiment was conducted at the Malle woreda in Koybe kebele farmers training center during the main rain season of 2016 to investigate the responses of haricot bean to different levels of phosphorus fertilizer and its effect on growth, and bean yield. Four phosphorus rates (0, 23, 46, and 69kg ha-1) were used as treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Red Wolaita haricot bean variety was used as planting material. Recommended rate of N (46 kg/ha) was applied to all treatments. The effect of phosphorus was significantly (P less than 0.05) increased bean yield and growth parameters such as leaf area and number of branches per plant, whereas its effect was not significant on plant height. Based on result obtained, application of 46kg P ha-1 is recommended for better production of haricot bean at Malle woreda and similar areas which have the same soil property.

Heterosis and inbreeding depression in 13 crosses involving 10 dry bush bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., lines and varieties are reported for days to maturity, pods per plant, 100-seed weight, seeds per pod, and bean yield. Six crosses showed positive heterosis (27.8–47.3%) over the mid-parent value for bean yield. Parents in each of these heterotic crosses differed for growth habit, seed size and geographical origin. But none of the F1 hybrids yielded significantly better than the highest yielding parental line. None of the crosses showed heterosis for pods per plant. All significant heterotic values for seeds per pod were negative. For 100-seed weight three crosses, both parents of which had small seeds, showed positive heterosis but one cross which had a significant negative value had one parent with small seeds and the one with large seeds. One heterotic cross each for bean yield and 100-seed weight showed subsequent inbreeding depression. But five crosses for bean yield, and one cross for 100-seed weight showing positive heterosis did not exhibit reduction due to inbreeding. Also, some crosses which either had nonsignificant or negative heterotic values for bean yield and yield components showed positive effects of inbreeding, i.e. the F2 outperformed the corresponding F1 hybrids. Possible causes for these phenomena are discussed.Key words: Bean, heterosis, inbreeding depression

The present study was accomplished to find out the effects of salinity on germination, growth, physiological and biochemical processes of two different groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea L.), varieties viz., Dacca-1, and Zhinga groundnut. The experiments consisted of five salinity treatments viz., control (no salinity), 3, 6, 9, and 12dS/m during germination and vegetative stage of groundnut varieties. Results showed that germination percentage of both the groundnut varieties was significantly decreased with the increase of salt concentration. During the germination stage, maximum shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight and shoot and root dry weight of groundnut varieties were recorded from Zhinga groundnut variety at salt stress. The same result occurred during the vegetative stage of Dacca-1 variety while the Zhinga groundnut variety showed maximum parameters than Dacca-1. Fresh weight, as well as dry weight, of shoots and roots of both the groundnut varieties was also decreased with the increase of salt concentrations while leaf proline concentrations were increased among these varieties. Salinity caused significant (P<0.001) reduction in chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll content in both the genotypes. Between two genotypes, Zhinga groundnut recorded higher chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll content than Dacca-1. From the studies, it is concluded that the groundnut genotype Zhinga was identified as the tolerant genotype to salt stress than Dacca-1. Overall results indicate that high salinity condition is not suitable for growing the groundnut.

Background: French bean is used both as dry seeds or as green pod vegetable and it is in increasing demand throughout Fiji. Limited agronomical information is available for its cultivation which is one of the barriers in increasing its production in country. This research aimed to study the influence of organic and inorganic fertilizers on growth and yield of (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Fiji. Methods: This research was conducted during April to September 2018 in a Randomized Block Design with three replications and seven treatments of organic and inorganic fertilizers. Observations on growth parameters and yield attributes were recorded and analyzed using analysis of variance technique. Result: Organic and inorganic fertilizers combinations significantly increase the growth and green pod yield of French bean. The applications of nutrient in combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers were found more effective than inorganic fertilizers or organic manure alone for growth and yield of French bean. The combination of 100% NPK (200 kg ha-1) along with Poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1 was found most effective for enhancing growth and yield. It was recorded that on the basis of yield and growth performance treatment 100% NPK along with PM @ 5 t ha-1 was superior.

Effects of seed pretreatment by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on drought tolerance in common bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were studied. Drought stress caused highly significant decrease in growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, total carbohydrates and phytohormones. An increase drought stress caused highly significant increase in compatible solutes and polyamine contents as antioxidants and ABA contents in shoots of common bean plants. H2O2-pretreatment of seeds enhanced all the above parameters than the waterpretreated seeds (control) under drought condition. Results suggested that H2O2, a stress signal could trigger the activation of antioxidants in seeds which persists in the plants to alleviate the oxidative damage leading to improvements in physiological attributes for the plants growth under drought.
