An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from June to December 2012 with a view to finding out the effect of seedling age and method of transplanting on the yield of Aman rice. Four seedling ages (10, 20, 30 and 40 days) and two transplanting methods (line and haphazard) were used as experimental treatments with four replications in a randomized complete block design. Seedling age, transplanting method and their interaction significantly influenced most of the yield components and yield of transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan41. The highest total tillers, effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index were obtained from 30-day-old seedlings. Line transplanting method produced the highest total tillers, effective tillers hill-1, grain yield and harvest index. The highest total tillers, effective tillers hill-1, grain yield and harvest index were obtained from 30-day-old seedlings with line transplanting method. Results revealed that 30-day-old seedlings under line transplanting method could be used to obtain maximum yield of transplant Aman rice cv. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December 2012 to observe the effect of variety, age of tiller seedling used for transplanting and nitrogen management on the yield performance of transplant Aman rice. The experiment consisted of two varieties viz. BRRI dhan49 and BRRI dhan51, two ages tiller seedling viz. 25- and 35-day old, five nitrogen management viz. control (no urea), application of prilled urea @ 215 kg ha-1 (1/2 at 15 DAT+1/2 at 30 DAT), prilled urea @ 215 kg ha-1 (1/3 at 15DAT+1/3 at 30DAT+1/3 at 45DAT ), urea super granules (USG) 1.8 g and USG 2.7 g four-hill-1 in every alternate row. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The results revealed that higher plant characters, straw yield and harvest index were obtained from BRRI dhan49 compared to BRRI dhan51. Older seedlings (35-day old) produced higher grain yield to younger seedlings. The highest yield contributing characters and grain yield were obtained when 1.8g USG was applied. The grain yield was highest in 35-day old tiller seedlings of BRRI dhan51 while fertilized with 1.8g USG. This value was lowest when 25-day old tiller seedlings of BRRI dhan51 were fertilized with prilled urea in two split applications. It may be concluded that 35-day tiller seedlings of BRRI dhan51 fertilized with USG 1.8 g four-hill-1 could be used for achieving higher yield of transplant Aman rice. An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of urea super granule (USG) as a source of nitrogen on the yield and yield components of transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan46 and BINA dhan7. Five levels of N (viz., 0, 60, 120 kg ha-1 as prilled urea and 60 and 120 kg ha-1 as USG) were taken as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1 and grain yield varied significantly due to different cultivars. All the yield and yield components except 1000-grain weight were influenced significantly by the levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The highest grain yield (4.82 t ha-1) was recorded in BINA dhan7 and the lowest one (4.30 t ha-1) was recorded in BRRI dhan39. Nitrogen @ 120 kg ha-1 as USG performed the best among the treatments in respect of yield and yield components of rice. The highest grain yield (5.46t ha-1) was obtained from BINA dhan7 with 120 kg N ha-1 as USG which was statistically identical with 60 kg N ha-1 as USG. A considerable amount (31.25%) of prilled urea (PU) nitrogen could be saved by using USG. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from July to December 2004 to evaluate the effect of hill spacing on the performance of BRRI dhan40 and BRRI dhan41 as Transplant aman crop. The experiment consisted of five hill spacings viz., 5cm. 10cm, 15 cm, and 25 cm where row to row spacing of 25 cm was kept constant for all treatments. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. The 25 cm x 5 cm hill spacing produced the tallest plant, highest total number of tillers/hill, bearing tillers/hill lowest number of non-hearing tillers/hill, grain yield and harvest index, while 25 cm x 5 cm hill spacing produced the highest number of sterile spikelets/panicle, straw yield and biological yield. BRRI dhan41 produced higher grain yield (4.7 t/ha) which was the contribution of higher number of grains/panicle and heavier grain weight. A field experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from April to July 2012 to study the effect of variety and weeding regime on the yield components and yield of Aus rice. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The experimental treatments comprised four varieties viz. BR 26, BRRI dhan27, BRRI dhan48 and Pariza; and five weeding treatments viz. no weeding, one hand weeding at 20 DAS(Days after sowing), two hand weeding at 20 DAS and 30 DAS, three hand weeding at 20, 30 and 40 DAS and weed free. Here broadcasting method of planting was used. Results revealed that varieties had significant effect on plant height, number of total tillers hill-1, number of effective tillers hill-1, number of non-effective tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1, number of unfilled spikelets panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. Grain yield was the highest in BRRI dhan48. Weeding regime had also significant effect on all the studied crop parameters except 1000-grain weight. The highest grain yield was obtained from weed free condition followed by three, two and one weeding conditions. Interaction between variety and weeding regime significantly influenced all the studied crop parameters except 1000-grain weight and harvest index. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2010 to May 2011 to study the effect of variety and rate of nitrogen on the performance of Boro rice. The experiment comprised three varieties viz., BRRI dhan28 (V1), BRRI dhan29 (V2) and BRRI dhan45 (V3); and five rates of nitrogen viz., control (N0), 50 kg  (N1), 100 kg (N2), 150 kg  (N3)and 200 kg  (N4) N ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The growth analysis results indicate that the tallest plant (80.88 cm) and the highest number of total tillers hill-1 (13.80) were observed in BRRI dhan29 at 70 DATs and the highest total dry matter (66.41 g m-2) was observed in BRRI dhan45. The shortest plant (78.15 cm) and the lowest number of tillers hill-1 (12.41) were recorded from BRRI dhan45 and the lowest dry matter (61.24 g) was observed in BRRI dhan29. The tallest plants (84.01 cm), highest number of tillers hill-1 (14.06) and the highest dry matter (69.58 g m-2) were obtained from 200 kg N ha-1. The tallest plants (86.48 cm) and maximum dry matter (72.30 g m-2) were recorded from BRRI dhan28 with 200 kg N ha-1 and BRRI dhan45 with 200 kg N ha-1, respectively. The highest number of tillers hill-1 (15.14) was obtained from BRRI dhan29 with 50 kg N ha-1. The harvest data reveal that variety had significant effect on total tillers hill-1, effective tillers hill-1, non-effective tillers hill-1, panicle length, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index. The highest grain yield (4.84 t ha-1) was recorded from BRRI dhan29. The results of the experiment also indicate that total tillers hill-1, effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1, sterile spikelets panicle-1, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index were significantly affected by levels of nitrogen, while plant height, panicle length, 1000-grain weight were not significantly affected by levels of nitrogen. The highest grain yield (5.58 t ha-1) was obtained from 200 kg N ha-1. Interaction effect of variety × 200 kg N ha-1 produced the highest grain yield (5.82 t ha-1). From the results of the study it may be concluded that BRRI dhan29 rice may be cultivated with 200 kg N ha-1 for obtaining higher yield in AEZ 9 of Bangladesh.Progressive Agriculture 26:6-14, 2015

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April to August 2011 to find out the effect of spacing and number of seedlings hill-1 on the performance of Aus rice cv. NERICA 1. Four spacing viz. 25 cm × l5 cm, 20 cm × l5 cm. 20 cm × 10 cm and 15 cm × 10 cm and four number of seedlings hill-1 viz. 2, 3, 4 and 5 were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The highest number of total tillers m-2, number of effective tillers m-2, number of grains panicle-1, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index were obtained from 20 cm × 10 cm spacing. Plant height and 1000- grain weight were not significantly affected by spacing. Number of seedlings hill-1 exerts a significant effect on plant height. The highest value of total tillers m-2, number of effective tillers m-2, total grains panicle-1, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index were obtained from five seedlings hill-1. The interaction between spacing and number of seedlings hill-1 significantly influenced yield and plant characters. The highest number of effective tillers m-2, grains panicle-1, grain yield, straw yield and biological yield were recorded from the interaction between 20 cm × 10 cm and five seedlings hill-1. A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to examine the effect of number of seedlings hill‑1 and rate and time of nitrogen application on the yield of late transplant Aman rice (cv. BR23). The experiment comprised three levels of number of seedlings hill-1 viz. 2, 4, and 6, three nitrogen rates viz. 0, 60 and 120 kg N ha-1 and three levels of time of nitrogen application viz. nitrogen application in two equal splits at 15 DAT and early tillering stage (ET); nitrogen application in three equal splits at 15 DAT, ET and panicle initiation (PI) stage; nitrogen application in four equal splits at 15 DAT, ET, PI and flowering (F) stages. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Number of effective tillers hill‑1, grain yield and straw yield were the highest when 6 seedlings were transplanted hill‑1 while all yield contributing characters, grain and straw yields were the highest at 120 kg N ha-1. In case of interaction, the highest grain yield was recorded in combination of 6 seedlings hill-1 × 120 kg N ha-1 and 120 kg N ha-1 × three times of nitrogen applications (15 DAT + ET + PI). The highest number of effective tillers hill-1 and grain yield were recorded in 6 seedlings hill-1 × 120 kg N ha-1 × three times N application (15 DAT + ET + PI) and thus this practice appears as the promising one for late transplant Aman rice ( cv. To investigate the effect of various transplanting dates on yield and yield attributing characteristics of Nerica rice mutants at drought prone areas, Ishurdi and Chapai Nawabgonj during aman season. Two advanced Nerica mutant lines (N4/350/P-4(5), N10/350/P-5-4) were evaluated compared with one check variety (Binadhan-17) with three dates of transplanting (D1=July 20, D2=July 30 and D3=August 10). The experiments were laid out on randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Twenty five days old seedlings were transplanted with optimum 20 x 20 cm row to row and plant to plant distance. The unit plot size was 3 m×4 m. The recommended doses of fertilizer were applied. The effect of dates of transplanting on grain yield of D3 was the highest (5.10 t ha-1) whereas D2 produced the lowest grain yield (4.24 t ha-1). Among the mutant lines/varieties, Binadhan-17 produced the highest grain yield (4.94 t ha-1) followed by N4/350/P-4(5) (4.57 t ha-1). The interaction effect of date and variety showed that Binadhan-17 produced the maximum yield (5.56 t ha-1) at D3 followed by N4/350/P-4(5) mutant (4.92 t ha-1). The interaction effect of date and location, D3 transplanting date produced the maximum yield (5.23 t ha-1) at Ishurdi which was followed by transplanting (4.96 t ha-1) at Chapai Nawabgonj. The interaction effect of variety and location Binadhan-17 produced maximum yield (5.06 t ha-1) in Ishurdi followed by Binadhan-17 in Chapai Nawabgonj (4.82 t ha-1). The interaction effect of date, variety and location transplanting date D3, Binadhan-17 produced maximum yield (5.70 t ha-1) in Ishurdi followed by transplanting date D3, Binadhan-17 in Chapai Nawabgonj (5.43 t ha-1). The data recorded on crop duration from transplanting to maturity revealed that the advanced mutant line N4/350/P-4(5) required the least average 108 days and the Binadhan-17 required maximum average 119 days. Therefore, 10th August was found to be the best date of transplanting and Binadhan 17 showed the best performance at Ishwardi in Bangladesh.

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during June to December 2014 with a view to finding out the effect of variety and level of nitrogen on the yield performance of fine aromatic rice. The experiment consisted of three varieties viz. Kalizira, Binadhan-13 and BRRI dhan34, and six levels of nitrogen viz. 0, 30, 60, 90 kg N ha-1, USG 1.8 g 4 hills-1 (55 kg N ha-1) and USG 2.7 g 4 hills-1 (80 kg N ha-1). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Variety, level of nitrogen and their interaction significantly influenced the yield of aromatic rice. The highest grain yield (3.33 t ha-1) was obtained from Binadhan-13 followed by BRRI dhan34 (3.16 t ha-1) and the lowest grain yield was found in Kalizira (2.11 t ha-1). In case of N, the tallest plant (140.3 cm), highest number of effective tillers hill-1 (11.40), grains panicle-1 (152.8), and grain yield (3.32 t ha-1) were obtained when fertilized with USG 1.8 g 4 hills-1 and the lowest values were found in 0 kg N ha-1. Therefore, Binadhan-13 fertilized with USG 1.8 g 4 hills-1 (55 kg N ha-1) appeared as the promising practice for appreciable grain yield.J. Environ. Sci. & Natural Resources, 9(1): 41-45 2016

Hybrid rice technology is one of the promising, sustainable, and proven technologies for increasing rice production and productivity with a yield advantage of 15–30% over modern inbred varieties. The potential of hybrid rice has so far not been exploited in Ghana. This study was undertaken to evaluate the yield potential, reaction to diseases, and physical grain attributes of some introduced hybrids. The trials were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates across three locations. Data were taken on grain yield, yield components, reaction to diseases, and grain physical characteristics. Four promising hybrids (SWARNA 2, ARGH 1501, ARGH 1502, and ARGH 1503) with a mean yield advantage of 15–20.8% over the best inbred check “AgraRice” were identified. With few exceptions, the hybrids were broadly adapted and had adequate resistance to blast and bacterial leaf blight. Most of the test hybrids had long slender grains which make them acceptable to the Ghanaian market but lacked aroma.
