Importance of diseases in herbage seed production

Yield and quality of herbage seed can be affected by many diseases. In New Zealand the most important diseases of grasses are rusts, especially stem rust on ryegrasses, cocksfoot and timothy; head smut of bromes; and ergot of paspalum. Blind-seed disease is of minor importance on ryegrass at present. Clover yield can be affected by rot, scorch and stem nematode. These diseases and others are discussed in relation to changing farming practices, and disease control measures are suggested. A study was carried out to evaluate the effect of head decapitation and planting density on plant growth, seed yield and quality of sprouting broccoli, Brassica oleracea var. italica L. using cultivar ‘Green Head’. The twenty treatments comprised of combinations of four head decapitation methods viz., D1 (decapitation of primary head at appearance and harvesting seeds from secondary heads), D2 (decapitation of primary head at marketable stage and harvesting seeds from secondary heads), D3 (removal of secondary heads at appearance and harvesting seeds primary head) and ‘D4’ (No decapitation- control) and five planting densities viz., S1 (60x60 cm), S2 (60x45 cm), S3(45x45 cm), S4 (60x30 cm), and S5 (45x30 cm). Decapitation of primary head at appearance and harvesting seeds from secondary heads (D1) and planting density S3 (45x45 cm) independently as well as in combination gave highest seed yield per plot and per hectare. This combination was also found comparable to other combinations for other characters like days to 50% flowering, days to seed harvesting, plant height at harvesting (cm), number of branches per plant, number of siliqua per plant, siliqua length (cm), number of seeds per siliqua and seed quality parameters. Therefore, it is suggested that decapitation of primary head at appearance and harvesting seeds from secondary heads (D1) in combination with plant spacing of 45x45 cm i.e. D1S3 can be recommended for commercial seed production of sprouting broccoli.

Dill seed production was investigated over two seasons, comprising a spring growing cycle (SGC) and an autumn growing cycle (AGC). The effects of growing cycle on phenological traits, yield and quality of dill seeds formed on different umbels of the mother plant were investigated. Significant differences were noted in the flowering period, seed yield and quality parameters. The SGC resulted in a shorter time from sowing to bolting and flowering initiation compared with the AGC. Plant height, number of umbels/plant, number of umbelets/umbel, umbel diameter, umbel length and seed weight/plant increased in the AGC. In contrast, decreased germination at 20/30°C and at 13°C, and increased mean germination time at 20/30°C in AGC indicated lower seed quality compared with SGC. Primary umbels produced the best yield and higher quality seeds, followed by the secondary umbels while tertiary umbels gave poor yield and quality seeds in both SGC and AGC. In conclusion, AGC was advisable for higher seed yield, but SGC resulted in higher seed quality compared with the AGC. This highlights the need to select a suitable growing cycle to guarantee high seed yield and quality for each seed production environment.

Because of lack of information about phosphorus fertilization in lettuce from the standpoint of seed production, this study was undertaken. The work was carried out in Botucatu, São Paulo state, Brazil, from September 25, 2003 to February 19, 2004, in order to study the influence of crescents phosphorus rates on yield and quality of lettuce seeds, cultivar Verônica. The experimental design was randomized blocks with five treatments (0; 200; 400; 600 and 800 kg ha-1 of P2O5) and five replications. The following characteristics were evaluated: seed production per plant (g plant-1), number of seeds per plant and quality (percentage of germination and seed vigor). A linear increasing was observed on production and number of seeds per plant of lettuce with phosphorus rates, but these rates did not affect the seed physiological quality evaluated on weight of 1,000 seeds (average = 0.91 g), first count of germination (98%), standard germination test (99%), seed germination speed index (68.5), seedling emergence speed index (97.0) and emerged seedlings (49.3%).

Italian, annual and perennial ryegrasses are the most important grass species cultivated for seed production in the Czech Republic. The straw remaining after seeds threshing can be used as low quality forage, bedding material or as soil amendment. However, there are no comprehensive information concerning grass straw yields and quality in central Europe. The aim of this study was to investigate the Italian (IR) and perennial (PR) ryegrass straw yield and quality. These parameters were measured for two harvest years at two locations. IR did not provide statistically higher straw yield than PR (7.50 and 7.17 t.ha–1 respectively, p = 0.314), but dry matter (DM) content immediatelly after threshing was higher than for PR (0.42 and 0.38 respectively, p = 0.03). IR straw had the same content of ash and hemicellulose (mean 69.8 and 216 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.22 and 0.57), but less crude protein (64.1 and 81.4 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.003), more fibre (399 and 382 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.02), NDF (656 and 629 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.03) and ADF (442 and 412 g. kg–1 DM, p = 0.000) when compared with PR straw. Most of the parameters were affected by the year (with exception of crude protein) and by location (with exception of yield, DM content, ash and crude protein). There were no differences in mineral nutrient contents between species. The highest values were found in potassium (19.8 g.kg–1 DM) what is comparable with average quality hay. Phosphorus, calcium and magnesium contents (1.42, 2.96 and 1.02 g.kg–1 DM) were substantially lower than in hay. Data concerning ryegrasses straw yield and quality from the USA are comparable with our results and can be used for European conditions.

Aim: To identify the best planting time for obtaining higher seed yield and quality of Soybean in off season. Study Design: Randomized completely block design (RCBD) Place and Duration of Study: Agricultural Research Station, Halladkere, Bidar, Karnataka between 2016 and 2017. Methodology: A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Halladkere, Bidar to find out the best off season planting time for quality seed production of Soybean. The certified seeds of soybean varieties, JS-335 and Dsb-21 were sown with recommended package of practices at appropriate field condition from November to February at every fortnight with a spacing of 30 cm X 10 cm. The quality parameters related to seed were carried out in the laboratory of seed science department. Further, soybean seeds were treated with fungicide (carbendazim 25% + mancozeb 75%) at the rate of 3 gram per kg of seeds. Results: From the present investigation, it was observed that among the different sowing dates, soybean varieties (JS 335 and DSb 21) sown during 1st fortnight of November recorded significantly higher plant growth parameters as well as seed yield followed by 2nd fortnight of November during off season. Further, climatic factors like rainfall, maximum and minimum temperature and relative humidity played a major role in the off season to produce higher seed yield and quality of Soybean. Conclusion: Among various sowing dates, November 1st Fortnight sowing resulted in highest seed yield with better seed quality in both cultivars (JS-335 and Dsb-21) of soybean.

Among medicinal plants, flower and fruit plants take up a large proportion. This paper analyses ecological environment conditions such as temperature, light, water and soil nutrients having influence on growth of these kinds of medicinal plants. Furthermore, it discusses the relationships among three dormancy regulation and control factors i.e. bud and branch, underground and overground, and reproductive growth and vegetative growth. Lastly, it summarizes technical points of cultivation and management of these kinds of medicinal plants and key control measures, which provide significant theoretical basis for the improvement of yield and quality of these kinds of medicinal plants and the change from wild species to cultivated species.

Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient for plant reproductive growth and seed setting. A better understanding of the reasonable application rate of B could provide guidelines for improving seed yield and quality. In this study, we used five B concentrations (0, 400, 800, 1200, and 1600 mg B L-1) to study the effect of foliar application of B on seed yield and quality of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in northern China. Our results indicated that foliar B application increased the pollen number, pollen viability, and dry weight and B concentration of alfalfa reproductive organs. The effect of B on alfalfa seed yield can be attributed to affecting the number of inflorescence and the seeds per pod. Foliar application with 800 mg B L-1 made quantitative and qualitative improvements in seed yield and quality of alfalfa. These results help to explain the positive effects of B on alfalfa seed production.
