A study was undertaken to identify the engineering properties of aggregates that explain the variability in the frictional performance of seal coat highway overlays. The frictional performance data of 72 test sections and section replicates collected over a period of 8 years were used in the formulation of statistical models that incorporate the significant variables. The effects of traffic, construction, and environmental variables were also considered. Formulated models were of two types: general and individual. The former type attempts to describe frictional performance using the observations collected on all aggregate materials used. The latter describes the performance of individual aggregate groups. Laboratory properties found to be significant included the polish value, impact and abrasion, and soundness properties. The coating of aggregate particles, gradation, and construction placing rates of aggregate and asphalt were also shown to be significant in explaining performance variability. The influence of traffic and region was found to be interactive with the type and properties of aggregates. The formulated models can be used as a tool for predicting the frictional performance of seal coat aggregates, thus providing a better means for the proper selection of aggregates and for the planning of future seal coat construction projects.

People interact with surfaces in interior spaces, where a huge part of their life lasts. Many of these surfaces which surrounds the interior spaces are covering or coating materials in various textures and shapes. Materials used in interior surfaces are applied for various purposes. Protection, insulation or decoration can be considered as the main objective of these purposes. This study aims to research what kind of polymer based surface materials are used by interior designers and their reasons, frequency and area of use. For this reason, the study is composed on a questionnaire. The questions are prepared by summarizing the polymer based material information obtained from the literature. The questionnaire participants are interior designers who are actively working in the field. With this group, a survey on selection of plastic materials has been made. Survey results are explained in the findings. The last chapter includes the conclusions and recommendations of the study. Keywords: Interior design, surface materials, plastics, polymers.

Microbial biofilms which form on all types of surfaces of technological systems in the dairy industry and on dairy farms adversely affect the quality and safety of final products, i.e. both foodstuffs and raw materials used for their production. The fact that a number of microorganisms are alimentary pathogens, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus or Listeria monocytogenes, makes a serious problem directly affecting human health. Biofilms are usually formed by various species of microorganism, which protect each other against the effects of biocidal (antibacterial) agents and are resistant to these agents. The colonisation of surfaces of the open and closed piping systems, floors, waste, walls and ceilings of the production halls becomes a major problem in the selection of effective sanitation agents for their control. Based on the existing model studies, practical methods for testing the effectiveness of sanitation procedures should be evaluated, including the selection of biocides and comparison of the physical parameters of the sanitation procedures. Testing the effectiveness of the sanitation agents should be performed with the use of standardised tests, which consider microbial, structural, and chemical characteristics of the living microbial communities on specific contact surfaces in the food-processing industry.

Background: The selection of materials for the production of multilayer insoles for diabetic feet is a difficult task owing to the lack of technical information about these materials. Therefore, objective criteria were established for the selection of these materials. Methods: Mechanical- and comfort-related tests for the mechanical characterization of different materials and their combinations were considered. These tests were conducted according to standardized test methods for polymeric cellular materials. Results: Criteria for the use of cellular materials were obtained. The properties of accommodation, cushioning, and filling materials were established and the most adequate polymer nature for each of the three applications was identified. Variables that affect the properties of these material combinations were studied. Conclusions: These test results will allow podiatrists to select insoles in a more objective way, thus achieving a more successful treatment for diabetic foot-related injuries. The operational durability of a hip endoprosthesis depends, among others, on the intensity of the damage processes of kinematic junction elements caused by fretting corrosion processes. In the article, the results of comparative studies on the fretting corrosion resistance of alloys commonly used for hip joints, i.e. Ti6Al4V, CoCrMo, stainless steel M30NW, and 316LVM, are presented. The research was carried out by means of a tribological pin-on-disc tester working in reciprocating motion, integrated with a potentiostat equipped with a triac electrode. The tribosystem was a pin pressed by a constant force to a reciprocating disc with a certain amplitude and frequency. The tests were carried out in a medium of aqueous bovine serum heated to 37°C. The conducted comparative tests of the above mentioned materials will allow selection of the best material combination in terms of tribological and fretting corrosion resistance. Under optimized conditions, the modified oils obtained a needed appropriate viscosity class.

The main purpose of this paper was to identify the factors affecting the selection of raw materials used by feed operators in feed production. An attempt was also made to indicate the barriers to increasing the use of native protein plants by feed operators in feed production. Today, many EU countries (including Poland) primarily rely on vegetable protein derived from genetically modified soya bean meal (mainly imported from South America and the U.S.) in addressing their needs for protein raw material used in animal feed. For many years now, Poland has taken steps to increase the production and use of native protein raw material to partially replace soya bean meal imports. The use of mixes of diverse domestic protein sources derived from grain legumes (peas, field beans, lupine) can provide an advantageous alternative to compound feeding stuff based on imported post-extraction soya bean meal. To meet the objective defined above, this paper relied on the results of a 2018 survey conducted with a sample of 29 feed operators located across the country. More than half (55%) of the enterprises surveyed did not use legumes in feed production; the use of legumes was above 10% in only 3% of respondents. When asked about the key factors affecting the selection of raw materials used in production processes, the respondents declared to be interested in buying large batches of homogeneous raw materials that meet specific quality parameters (33% replied “rather yes” and 67% replied “definitely yes”). The protein content of plant seeds used in feed production was identified as another aspect of extreme importance (55% replied “rather yes” and 24% replied “definitely yes”).

Abstract Metallic and non-metallic materials used for piping are discussed, showing the number of different corrosive solutions each material can handle, and comparative costs of the two groups of materials. Also discusses proper selection of non-metallics for use with liquid corrosives. Includes tabular data from investigation. 7.2
