Introduction: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a fatal condition for very-low-birth-weight infants. Necrotizing enterocolitis is a multi-factor phenomenon that results in intestinal mucosal damage and leads to intestinal necrosis. However, sensitive laboratory indicators for NEC are lacking, making early diagnosis difficult. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and NEC in preterm neonates to enable an earlier diagnosis of the condition.Methods: This was a retrospective case–control study of preterm neonates diagnosed with NEC between January 2018 and December 2019 in the West China Second University Hospital. Controls were selected from preterm neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) graduates, and they were matched for gestation and year of birth to the preterms diagnosed without NEC. In total, 93 and 107 infants were included in the NEC and control groups, respectively. Empowerstats analysis was used to identify the association between PLR and preterm NEC.Results: The NEC group had significantly higher PLR levels than the control group. PLR > 100 within 1 week before NEC diagnosis was a risk factor for NEC. There was a positive connection between PLR and preterm NEC. A PLR of >100 was determined as the optimal cutoff for predicting preterm NEC, with patients with PLR >100 having a higher risk of NEC [odds ratio (OR): 18.82 (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.93–120.98), p = 0.002].Conclusions: A PLR of >100 within 1 week after clinical abnormalities is associated with a high risk of NEC in preterm neonates.

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between antenatal antibi-otic exposure and the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in low birth weight infants.Study design: A retrospective case-control study was conducted on all infants with NEC who were born between 201 0 and 2020. Medical histories of all infants diagnosed with NEC ≥ Bella IIA stage and corresponding controls without NEC were examined. Maternal and newborn char-acteristics were compared using the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel method, and logistic regression models were constructed to account for bias.Results. Clinical data were analyzed for 97 matched pairs. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for pre-natal ampicillin exposure was significantly higher for infants who developed NEC (OR 2.3, 95% CI 1.1,4.8, P = 0.003) than for children in the control group. Infants who developed NEC were more likely to have a history of intrauterine exposure to ampicillin in the immediate prenatal period than infants who did not develop NEC.

Postnatal growth restriction has high prevalence in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm neonates, and this could affect their long-term prognosis. Nowadays, there is no consensus on how to monitor growth in these neonates.Objective: This study aimed to compare prevalence of intra- and extrauterine growth restriction (IUGR and EUGR) in a sample of VLBW infants according to the Fenton 2013 charts and INTERGROWTH-21st (IW-21) standards and to analyze concordance between both in the different EUGR definitions criteria (cross-sectional, dynamic, and true).Patients and Methods: An observational retrospective study of 635 VLBW preterm was performed. The study was carried out in Central University Hospital of Asturias. Body measurements (weight, length, and head circumference) were collected at birth and at hospital discharge and expressed in z-scores for the two references (Fenton 2010 and IW-21). Kappa concordance was calculated.Results: Kappa concordance between Fenton and IW-21 was 0.887 for IUGR and 0.580 for static EUGR. Prevalence was higher according to Fenton in IUGR (36.5 vs. 35.1%), in static EUGR (73.8 vs. 59.3%), and in dynamic EUGR (44.3 vs. 29.3%). Despite observing low prevalence of EUGR when IW-21 was used to define EUGR, a statistical association between neonatal morbidity and diagnosis of EUGR was observed.Conclusion: The Fenton and IW-21 concordance for IUGR is good. IW-21 is more restrictive than Fenton in EUGR. Patients diagnosed by IW-21 as EUGR are more likely to have neonatal morbidity, especially if we use EUGR dynamic definition. In our study, we cannot conclude that one graph is better than the other.

Abstract Objectives A tension headache is the most common type of headache, and its causes are multifactorial. A relationship has been shown between migraine headaches and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). In this study, we investigated the NLR, PLR, and serum CRP levels in frequent episodic tension-type headache (FETTH) and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) patients. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included 64 patients with FETTH, 80 patients with CTTH, and 60 healthy controls who were followed up in the neurology clinic. Hematological parameters were compared between the patient and control groups. Results In CTTH patients, platelets, NLR, PLR, and CRP values were statistically higher than in FETTH patients and patients in the control group. In FETTH patients, the PLR value was higher than in patients in the control group, but there was no statistically significant difference in NLR and CRP values between FETTH patients and patients in the control group. Also, there was no correlation between these values and age and gender. Conclusion Increase platelet count might have an effect on tension-type headache pathophysiology. Systemic inflammation parameters were shown to be significantly higher in CTTH patients. More comprehensive studies are needed to evaluate the effect of systemic inflammation on the chronicity of tension headaches.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: Inflammation has been suggested as a potential mechanism in the pathogenesis of arrhythmia. Hemogram parameters such as monocyte count to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) have been considered to be markers of inflammation and new cardiovascular risk predictors. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the relationship between MHR, NLR, and MLR in patients with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). METHODS: A retrospective study conducted at a university hospital in Bolu, Turkey, between 2017 and 2019. Our study included 196 patients who underwent electrophysiological study (EPS) due to palpitation or documented PSVT on electrocardiography (ECG). Patients having documented atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVNRT) on ECG or inducible AVNRT on EPS were included in the PSVT group (n=130), and patients with palpitation but without inducible arrhythmia on EPS (n=66) were included in the control group. Routine biochemical and hemogram tests were performed before the EPS procedure. RESULTS: When hemogram parameters were compared, there was no statistically significant difference in MHR values [0.010 (0.001-0.030) vs 0.010 (0.001-0.020) p =0.67]. Additionally, both NLR [2.21(0.74-11.36) vs 1.98(0.72-24.87) p=0.13] and MLR [0.25 (0.03-1.05) vs 0.24(0.07-1.39) p=0.41] were not statistically significant between the two groups. CONCLUSION: There is no significant difference in PSVT patients regarding hemogram parameters including white blood cell subtypes, MLR, NLR, and MHR. Therefore the evaluation of hemogram parameters may not be clinically relevant for PSVT patients.
