Orange fleshed sweet potatoes (OFSP) are desirable for high productivity and profitability and their distribution to improve the nutrition of river bank inhabitants of Gaibandha and Rangpur districts of Bangladesh. In this context, a field trial was conducted in two riverbank-based farmers’ fields such as Saghata, Gaibandha, and Pirganj, Rangpur, particularly in the Active Tista Floodplain Agro-ecological Zone of Bangladesh. Four OFSP varieties were evaluated, i.e., G1: BARI SP-8; G2: BARI SP-12; G3: BARI SP-14; G4: BARI SP-15, along with one local cultivar as a control (Red skin with white flesh). Significant variations among the sweet potato genotypes were noted for a number of tuberous roots plant−1, length of root diameter of roots, tuberous root weight plant−1, root yield (fresh), root yield (dry), beta-carotene yield, as well as energy output. Over the locations, BARI SP-12 produced about 73% higher root yield (32.00 t ha−1) and it was like the BARI SP-8 (31.07 t ha−1), which produced about 68% higher yield in comparison with local cultivar (18.51 t ha−1). Across the location, BARI SP-8 performed better in root yield (31.89 t ha−1) in Gaibandha, 69% superior to local cultivar, whereas BARI SP-12 performed better in Rangpur (33.66 t ha−1), which was 86% greater than the local sweet potato cultivar. Considering the root dry yield production, BARI SP-8 produced the highest in the Gaibandha location after that Rangpur location. Further, BARI SP-14 had wider adaptability and stability over the year and location depended on the AMMI model. The beta carotene yield (Vitamin-A precursor) ranged 336–2957 kg ha−1 among the OFSP varieties, whereas the highest (2957 kg ha−1) carotene was recorded in BARI SP-14, similar to BARI SP-15 (2952 kg ha−1) but was much lower in BARI SP-8 and BARI SP-12. Moreover, BARI SP-8 and BARI SP-12 were also economically profitable in terms of gross margin (3233 and 3364 US$ ha−1, respectively), net return (3039 and 3170 US$ ha−1, respectively) and BCR (3.21 and 3.31, respectively, vs. 1.91) due to higher returns with a similar production cost of the local cultivar. The results suggested that BARI SP-8 is economically profitable in the riverbank areas of Gaibandha, and BARI SP-12 is suitable for the riverbank areas of Rangpur.

The study was carried out to evaluate the impact of processing on retention of beta-carotene of sweet potatoes. Eight cultivars of sweet potatoes were used in the study; among which four cultivars were of orange-fleshed varieties viz. ‘CIP 440012’, ‘CIP 440015’, ‘CIP 440267’ & ‘CIP 440021’, and four cultivars were of white fleshed varieties viz. Lamatar White, Balewa Red, Sangachowk Red and Barbote White. The proximate composition and micronutrient composition of eight cultivars of raw sweet potatoes were determined. The carotene content of sweet potato cultivars was also calculated. Finally, the retention of carotene content in sweet potato cultivates under various processing methods (viz. boiling for 30 minutes at 100°C, baking in a microwave oven at 200°C for 30 minutes and drying in a cabinet dryer for 12 hours at 60°C) was observed. The orange fleshed varieties (CIP cultivars) had the greater proximate composition than the white fleshed varieties (local cultivars). The micronutrient composition of orange fleshed sweet potatoes and white fleshed varieties were similar. But the carotene content of the orange fleshed varieties was greater; ranging from 14.43-22.11 mg/100gm. The white fleshed varieties had a low carotene concentration of 0.70-1.83 mg/100gm. The retention of carotene content was observed higher in the boiling process (79%-89%) followed by baking (56%-78%) and least in drying (44%-67%). Also, the orange fleshed varieties had a better retention capability than white fleshed varieties in all the processing methods. Thus, orange fleshed sweet potatoes had a better nutrient profile with higher retention capabilities.

South Texas is located in a subtropical semiarid climate, and due to high temperature and irregular precipitation, farmers opt to leave their fields fallow during the summer months jeopardizing overall soil health. We evaluated whether sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cultivation coupled with drip irrigation could restore soil biological activities compared with bare fallow. Additionally, because sweet potatoes have high demand of soil nutrients, especially potassium (K), we evaluated the nutrient supply of locally sourced soil amendments. Sweet potato was cultivated during summer 2018 in McAllen, Texas, under control (no fertilizer), NPK (synthetic fertilizer), RC (yard-waste compost), and AC (compost produced under an enhanced composting process), and biochar (gasified walnut shell at 900°C), each with three replicates. Soil amendments were applied at different amounts to result in a rate of 80 kg K ha−1. Soil biological indicators were microbial biomass phosphorous, phosphatase activity, and the rate of fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (FDA). Available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium were also quantified. Aboveground biomass and storage root yield estimated sweet potato’s agronomic performance. Cultivation and irrigation stimulated soil enzyme activities and microbial biomass-phosphorous. Sweet potato yields were the highest in NPK treatment but still 2.8 times lower than variety’s potential yield. Storage root yield was inversely related to aboveground biomass, suggesting that growing conditions benefited the production of shoot versus roots. Both biochar and AC treatments stimulated FDA rates and K availability. Soil pH and sodium concentration increased in all treatments over the growing season, possibly due to river-sourced irrigation water. Together, these findings show that crop cultivation promoted soil biological activities and the maintenance of nutrient cycling, compared to bare-fallow conditions. For a better agronomic performance of sweet potato, it would be necessary to identify management practices that minimize increase in soil pH and salinity.

Sweet potato is one of the seven major staple crops in the world. Although most cream-fleshed sweet potatoes are produced locally, orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is an excellent source of beta-carotene and can be promoted to alleviate vitamin A deficiency. The aim of this study was to evaluate the retention of total carotenoids (TC) and all-trans-beta-carotene (ATBC) after processing and storage of cookies with different proportions of OFSP and margarine. Cookies formulated with 18 to 22.23 g/100 g of OFSP and 28.57 to 34.6 g/100 g of margarine were analyzed by spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography. The formulation containing the highest content of OFSP (22.23 g/100 g) and 32.84 g/100 g of margarine showed greater retention of TC and ATBC after processing. Among the other samples with the same proportion of OFSP, the one containing the highest margarine concentration (34.6 g/100 g) has shown a greater capacity to maintain TC and ATBC during storage (up to 56 days), demonstrating lipids important role in the preservation of these components.

Introduction: There is complete dependence on wheat flour for baked products, which are imported from other parts as wheat can’t grow in Nigeria. Therefore, to reduce the cost of importation, composite flour can be an alternative. Composite flour has some advantages for developing countries such as Nigeria as it reduces the importation of wheat flour and encourages the use of locally available resource for making flour. Methodology: Orange -fleshed sweet potatoes (OFSP), yellow roots cassava (YRC) were all sourced from National Root Crops Research Institute Umudike (NRCRI), while the plantain and Moringa oleifera leaves were gotten from Umuahia market and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) respectively. The samples were processed into flour to form different blend ratio. The flour blend constitutes of yellow root cassava, orange fleshed sweet potato and plantain which were fortified with Moringa oleifera leaves at constant portion of 5% while the YRC, OFSP and plantain were varied at different concentrations. Three (3) experiments were conducted, of which experiment 1 is the flour made from the blend of YRC, OFSP, plantain and moringa oleifera leave. Sample A, B, C, D, E F, G and H were the composite flour. A consist of  65% YRC, 10% OFSP, 20% Plantain, 5% moringa leaves powder: B consist of 70% YRC, 10% OFSP, 15% Plantain, 5% moringa leaves powder: C is 75% YRC, 10% OFSP, 10% Plantain, 5% moringa leaves powder, D is made up of  80% YRC, 5% OFSP, 10% Plantain, 5% moringa leaves powder, E is  85% YRC, 5% OFSP, 5% Plantain, 5% moringa leaves powder, F is 95% and 5% moringa leaves powder, G is 95% plantain and 5% moringa leaves powder and H is 95% and 5% moringa leaves powder respectively. Experiment 2 was the extruded baked snacks from the blend ratio of composite flour and Experiment 3 was the fresh of yellow root cassava, plantain and orange fleshed sweet potatoes analysed on fresh basis. Results: The breakdown of the extruded baked snacks ranged between (254.72 RVU to 298.54 RVU) from sample P to J. No significant difference (P >0.05) was observed among samples K (271.64 RVU), N (276.64 RVU) and M (279.11 RVU). Peak viscosity values obtained from experiment 1 ranged from 202.31 RVU to 388.68 RVU. There was no significant difference (P >0.05) among the samples A (382.65 RVU), D (382.07 RVU), E (383.07 RVU) and H (384.63 RVU).The holding strength of the composite flour in this study range from 123.16 RVU to 256.62 RVU. The result on experiment 3i. e. fresh of yellow root cassava had the highest peak viscosity of (355.72 RVU), followed by sample R (291.75) and sample S (260.09 RVU) which were the fresh plantain and fresh orange-fleshed sweet potato. Result of trough, indicated that sample Q (117.17 RVU) had the highest trough followed by sample R (83.40 RVU) and S (80.16 RVU). A significant difference was observed on final viscosity within the fresh samples whereby sample Q (394.09 RVU) had the highest score followed by sample R (334.13 RVU) and S (300.63 RVU). Conclusion: There was no significant difference (P >0.05) within experiment 1, 2 and 3 on peak value, final viscosity, setback, breakdown and peak time while the trough was high in experiment 1 (composite flour) than in experiment 2 and 3. As food, the extrudates with low relative viscosity can easily be eaten by infants while those with high viscosity can only be eaten easily by adults because they tend to be hard and cohesive in texture than samples with low viscosities.

Bread was produced from wheat (Trititum spp) orange flesh sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) flour, starch and non-starch residue blends. The orange-fleshed sweet potatoes were washed, peeled, sliced, dried and milled to flour. The starch and non-starch residue were also produced from the orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. Different proportions of wheat and flour, wheat and starch and wheat and non-starch residue of orange-fleshed sweet potato with increasing level of orange-fleshed sweet potato at 10, 20, 30 and 40% addition in wheat were prepared. Control samples were 100% wheat flour (A0), 100% orange-fleshed sweet potato flour (A1), 100% orange-fleshed sweet potato starch (B1) and 100% orange-fleshed sweet potato non-starch residue (C1). Breads from these different proportions were formulated. The proximate, mineral, vitamin, physical properties and sensory attributes of the bread samples and their composites were determined. The GENSTAT Statistical Software (version 17.0) was used for data analyses. The Proximate compositions of the bread ranges as follows; moisture 26.30-36.21%, protein 0.85-7.89%, fat 6.33-8.93%, fiber 0.82-4.92%, ash 0.56-2.11% and carbohydrates 41.26-64.84%. The physical properties of the breads ranged from 210.60-254.00 g, 0.05-2.40 mm, 317.60-440.60 cm3 and 1.25-2.10 for loaf weight, oven spring, loaf volume and specific volume respectively. Mineral and vitamin composition for breads samples ranged respectively thus for calcium 18.45-33.21 zinc 0.92-6.27, magnesium 0.28-19.33, phosphorus 31.00-319.60 and potassium 56.30-352.60, vitamin B1, 0.10-0.37, vitamin B2, 0.07-1.23, vitamin B6, 0.09-1.25, vitamin B12 0.04-1.13 mg/100 g, vitamin C 0.12-14.17 mg/100 g and vitamin A 0.00-8193 µg/100 g.The sensory evaluation results indicated that up to 20% substitution of wheat flour with orange-fleshed sweet potato flour, starch and non-starch residue flours was acceptable in bread formulation.

A study was conducted to assess the effects of gypsum on the early growth and storage root yield of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cvs `Jewel', `Goergia Jet' and `TI-155'. Three rates of gypsum were applied (1.03, 2.06 and 3.09 tons/acre). These represented half, recommended and 1.5 recommended levels. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with a split plot arrangement of treatment. Leaf area, total dry matter, leaf dry matter and stat-age root weight were recorded at 30-day intervals. Plants receiving half the recommended levels of gypsum produced the highest total storage root dry matter (0.306 t/a) and the highest leaf dry matter (0.116 t/a). Although a positive relationship exists between leaf dry matter and storage root yield between 90 and 120 days, there was no such relationship between those parameters either at 30 and 60 days or 60 and 90 days after transplanting.

The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) requires a long, hot growing season to attain good yields. In a cool climate, the use of black plastic mulch to heat the soil can improve growth but cultivars, plant spacing, and harvest date must be carefully selected to optimize yields and to attain market quality standards. In this two-year study in Quebec, Canada, two sweet potato cultivars (‘Georgia Jet’ and ‘Beauregard’) were grown at four in-row spacings (15, 30, 45, and 60 cm) and harvested at three dates (mid September, late September, and early October). Cumulative growing degree-days (GDD) with base temperatures of 10°C and 15.5°C were calculated for each harvest date. ‘Georgia Jet’ had higher total and marketable yields than ‘Beauregard’. In-row spacing had no effect on yields per hectare of ‘Beauregard’ and only affected ‘Georgia Jet’ in one year of the study. Average root weight of sweet potatoes, yields per plant, and number of roots per plant increased with wider spacing. Delaying harvest by one or two weeks had little effect on ‘Beauregard’ but increased yields of ‘Georgia Jet’. GDD may be a useful predictor of optimum harvest date but a lower base temperature used to calculate GDD may be desirable with ‘Georgia Jet’ as its yields continued to increase even when growing under cool conditions of late September and early October.

Sweet potato is one of the most important staple crops in Sub-Sahara Africa because of its supply of carbohydrates, vitamin A and C, fiber, iron, potassium and protein.The objective of this study was to determine phenotypic variation in diverse sweetpotato varieties for marketable roots, fresh root yield, fresh biomass weight, harvest index, beta carotene content and root dry matter content. Twenty five sweet potato genotypes were evaluated at two sites in two seasons in Kenya using a randomized complete block design of three replications. The results indicated that there were highly significantly variations for genotypes and sites for all the traits studied. There were no significant differences for genotype x site x season effects for the traits except for the number of marketable roots and fresh root yield. The mean fresh root was 32.19 t/ha,with the genotype Ininda expressing the highest fresh root yield of 54.79 t/ha. Genotypes, Naspot 13, Ejumula, Kabode, Vitaa and Tio-Joe gave the highest beta carotene content ranging between 11.830 and 10.040 mg/100g; with a mean of 5.384 mg/100g. The mean root dry matter content was 24.84 % with clones Amelia and Melinda showing the highest and lowest root dry matter content of 30.62 and 16.52 % respectively. Ten genotypes including Ininda, Erica, Jane, Naspot 13, Ejumula, Kabode, Vitaa, Tio-Joe, Amelia and Mayai were recommended as potential parents for sweet potato breeding program in Kenya.

This article discusses the benefits of sweet potato leaves containing beta carotene and lutein for eye health. There are some problems of eyes namely Conjunctivitis, Dry Eyes , Cataract, Glaucoma and Refractive errors (blurred vision). Treatment options include surgery, including laser and traditional eye surgery. Sweet potatoes are high in beta-carotene and anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants that can help prevent eyesight loss and support eye health. Beta carotene (provitamin A) and vitamin C are plentiful in yellow sweet potato. The beta carotene and lutein content is beneficial for eye health.
