Intuitive and safe interfaces for robots are challenging issues in robotics. Robo-HUD is a gadget-less interaction concept for contactless operation of industrial systems. We use virtual collision detection based on time-of-flight sensor data, combined with augmented reality and audio feedback, allowing the operators to navigate a virtual menu by “hover and hold” gestures. When incorporated with virtual safety barriers, the collision detection also functions as a safety feature, slowing or stopping the robot if a barrier is breached. Additionally, a user focus recognition module monitors the awareness, enabling the interaction only when intended. Early case studies show that these features present good use-cases for inspection tasks and operation in difficult environments, where contactless operation is needed.

Accurate tracking for Augmented Reality applications is a challenging task. Multi-sensors hybrid tracking generally provide more stable than the effect of the single visual tracking. This paper presents a new tightly-coupled hybrid tracking approach combining vision-based systems with inertial sensor. Based on multi-frequency sampling theory in the measurement data synchronization, a strong tracking filter (STF) is used to smooth sensor data and estimate position and orientation. Through adding time-varying fading factor to adaptively adjust the prediction error covariance of filter, this method improves the performance of tracking for fast moving targets. Experimental results show the efficiency and robustness of this proposed approach.

Abstract. In many fields today, it is necessary that a team has to do operational planning for a precise geographical location. Examples for this are staff work, the preparation of surveillance tasks at major events or state visits and sensor deployment planning for military and civil reconnaissance. For these purposes, Fraunhofer IOSB is developing the Digital Map Table (DigLT). When making important decisions, it is often helpful or even necessary to assess a situation on site. An augmented reality (AR) solution could be useful for this assessment. For the visualization of markers at specific geographical coordinates in augmented reality, a smartphone has to be aware of its position relative to the world. It is using the sensor data of the camera and inertial measurement unit (IMU) for AR while determining its absolute location and direction with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and its magnetic compass. To validate the positional accuracy of AR markers, we investigated the current state of the art and existing solutions. A prototype application has been developed and connected to the DigLT. With this application, it is possible to place markers at geographical coordinates that will show up at the correct location in augmented reality at anyplace in the world. Additionally, a function was implemented that lets the user select a point from the environment in augmented reality, whose geographical coordinates are sent to the DigLT. The accuracy and practicality of the placement of markers were examined using geodetic reference points. As a result, we can conclude that it is possible to mark larger objects like a car or a house, but the accuracy mainly depends on the internal compass, which causes a rotational error that increases with the distance to the target.

Cultural heritage sites and museums are faced with an important challenge – how best to balance the needs of engaging visitors in meaningful and entertaining experiences, while at the same time exploiting the affordances of exhibits for instructional purposes. In this chapter, we examine the use of augmented reality in the context of informal learning environments, and how this type of technology can be used as a means to enhance learning about history. The research case studies are reviewed in terms of the use of historical locations, experience mechanics, narrative/plot, and role-playing (the later two representing game-based elements) in the design guidelines of instructional activities and applications (Dunleavy & Dede, 2014). In doing so, we critique the theoretical, methodological, and instructional underpinnings of studies that evaluate augmented reality applications and draw several recommendations for future research in this field.

Cloud Computing is rapidly gaining traction today as the preferred platform for deploying both development and production workloads. Every industry has started adopting hybrid hosting models to leverage benefits that accrue from a convergence of technologies; Cloud is being used as a flexible springboard to mount a defense against disruptive digital trends. The use cases and associated gains are industry specific, ranging from leveraging auto-scaling to assuage seasonal spikes in Retail, and creating software-defined network functions in Telecom, to aggregating and analyzing sensor data in Automotive, and deploying multi-site disaster recovery in Government. In this chapter, we will embark on an expedition spanning ten industries, searching for patterns where Cloud enables advantageous solutions to business-specific categories of use cases. The observations are based on actual case studies chosen from hundreds of real Cloud deals across industries.

The purpose of this chapter is to investigate some of the opportunities offered by technological innovations, in particular referring the specific application areas of Augmented Reality and Augmented Virtuality. The contribution presents a series of applications based on effective tests of innovative communication, which are characterized by different levels of interactivity and immersion. The general subject of interest is the city of Ascoli Piceno considering both the city as a whole and particular places/buildings of value (case studies). The central aim is to construct an informational/educational approach to real objects in innovative terms, experimenting each time with the most useful ‘container' (communicational product) to enable the best knowledge of a determined heritage.
