The development of a photonic device based on a non-diffracting surface plasmon polariton (SPP) beam can effectively improve the anti-interference ability. Furthermore, an easily adjustable on-chip routing device is highly desirable and extremely important in practical optical communication applications. However, no non-diffracting SPP-beam-based spin routing devices with high tunability in multiple degrees of freedom have been reported. In this study, we theoretically designed a simple micro-nano structure to realize a highly adjustable non-diffracting SPP-beam-based spin router using Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation. The simulation results show that the structure enables spin-controlled nondiffracting SPP-beam directional launching. The launching direction of the nondiffracting SPP beam can be dynamically rotated counterclockwise or clockwise by changing the incident angle. Hence, the routing SPP beam can be coupled to different output waveguides to provide dynamic tunability. Moreover, this device shows good broadband response ability. This work may motivate the design and fabrication of future practical photon routing devices.

We compare the fluorescence enhancement from a conducting polymer film placed on top of a sinusoidal and biharmonic metallic grating. On the biharmonic grating, which possesses a surface plasmon polariton band-gap, the enhancement factor was larger than that on a sinusoidal grating, even though the coupling efficiency of the surface plasmon polariton was lower for the biharmonic grating. We investigate the mechanism of fluorescence enhancement numerically by finite difference time domain analyses and attribute the larger fluorescence enhancement to the electric field of the short wavelength band-edge mode extending longer into the dielectric region where the fluorophore is placed.

In this paper, we have proposed a novel periodic surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguide to realize a one-way mode converter which is based on a parity–time (PT) symmetry broken system, and it converts the fundamental TM mode to the first-order TM mode in only forward direction. Periodic gain potentials are put in place to construct the system mentioned in periodic SPP waveguide. Further, as the mode converter contains gain and loss material, light signals will be amplified when it propagates forward, and they will be attenuated toward when they propagate backward. The unidirectional mode converter has wide applications in nonlinearity induced isolation, mode insensitive element and on-chip mode locked laser.

The reverse design method (RDM) is a frontier direction in the optical research field. In this work, RDM is applied to the design of terahertz demultiplexers, including two-port and three-port terahertz demultiplexers, with areas of 3 mm × 3 mm and 5 mm × 5 mm, respectively. The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation results show that the terahertz waves at frequencies of 0.5 THz and 0.417 THz can be well separated by the two-port demultiplexer, and the transmittances of the two outputs reach as high as 0.75 after bandwidth optimization. Meanwhile, the three-port terahertz demultiplexer can have terahertz waves separated from three Ports, and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is less than −18 dB.
