In the present work, a series of Sm3+ doped transparent strontium aluminate glasses with the composition Al2O3-(3-x)SrO: xSm3+ (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, 0.1, 0.2) were fabricated by a containerless process using an aerodynamic levitation furnace. The structural characteristics, density, Vicker’s hardness, and thermal and spectroscopic behaviors of these glasses were investigated. All the glasses exhibit excellent thermal stabilities (Tg ≥ 792 °C) and the glass-forming ability is enhanced with the increasing content of Sm3+. The emission spectra recorded under an excitation of 404 nm show four emission transitions as a result of 4G5/2 translated to the lower states of 6H5/2, 6H7/2, 6H9/2, and 6H11/2, and a bright orange-reddish luminescence can be observed in Al2O3-(3-x)SrO: xSm3+ glasses. The high thermal stability, good glass-forming ability and excellent hardness provide new options for the development of visible orange-reddish lasers and smart photoluminescent glass coating materials.

Ni based amorphous alloys with Si and B, which can also, contains Fe and Cr, prepared by rapid solidification, have low melting temperatures. This fact increases their susceptibility to be joined by welding and brazing. The glass forming ability (GFA) is conditioned also by the crystallization delay, due to certain chemical composition of the alloys. The thermal stability of these alloys was revealed by DTA analysis and structural characteristics were investigated by XRD. Applying an annealing at temperatures between 420°C and 540°C, with 30 minutes maintaining time, allowed the investigation of phase occurred during the crystallization and the estimation of the crystalline grains dimensions.

The effect of Yb3+ ions on upconversion luminescence and thermal properties of Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped La2O3-Nb2O5-Ta2O5 glasses has been studied. Glass transition temperature is around 740 °C, indicating high thermal stability. The effect of Yb3+ ions on the thermal stability is not obvious. Both the glass forming ability and the upconversion luminescence first increase and then decrease with the increase of Yb3+ ions. The glasses perform low glass forming ability with ΔT around 55 °C. Blue and red emissions centered around 477, 651, and 706 nm are obtained at the excitation of 976 nm laser. The upconversion luminescence mechanism is energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+ mixed with two- and three- photon processes. The thermal kinetic Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA)-analysis indicates that the average activation energy first increases and then decreases with the increase of Yb3+ ions. This result can be introduced in order to improve upconversion luminescence of glasses by crystallization in the future. Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped La2O3-Nb2O5-Ta2O5 glasses with good upconversion and thermal properties show promising applications in solid-state laser, optical temperature sensing.

Zr/Nb-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) with a composition of Zr48Nb8Fe8Cu12Be24 was formed in cylindrical shapes 8 mm in diameter by the quartz tube water quenching method. The formation and acoustic, thermal, mechanical, and elastic properties of the BMG were investigated. The BMG exhibited excellent glass-forming ability, high thermal stability, and excellent mechanical properties.
