In this study, a hybrid finite element (FE) and cellular automaton (CA) model is developed to explore crystallization behavior and alloying of Inconel713LC during Laser powder bed fusion. A cellular automaton model is considering the surface nucleation, equiaxed bulk nucleation, and grain growth kinetics. In addition, the equation for solute diffusion is coupled with a cellular automaton model to simulate the IN713LC elements segregation. During the phase change, the non-equilibrium segregation model is applied to insert the effect of ultra-fast solidification happening during LPBF. It is found that, during LPBF processing of IN713LC, the micro segregation of Nb, Ti, and C is accrued at the grain boundaries. It is further shown that the micro segregation intensity depends on the solidification speed, which is determined in turn by the laser heat input. In particular, a lower laser heat input increases the solidification speed and results in a more uniform solid phase, thereby reducing the risk of crack formation. Finally, using a comparison between simulation results and experimental observation, it was shown that the proposed model successfully predicts the bulk element concentration of IN713LC after laser melting.

This is the first of two manuscripts that presents a computationally efficient full field deterministic model for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). A new Hybrid Line (HL) heat input model integrates an exponentially decaying (ED) heat input over a portion of a laser path to significantly reduce the computational time. Experimentally measured properties of the high gamma prime nickel-based superalloy RENÉ 65 are implemented in the model to predict the in-process temperature distribution, stresses, and distortions. The model accounts for specific properties of the material as different phases. The first manuscript presents the HL heat transfer model, which is compared with the beam-scale exponentially decaying model, along with the melt pool geometry obtained experimentally by varying the laser parameters. The predicted melt pool geometry of the beam-scale ED model is shown to have good agreement with experimental measurements. While the proposed HL model exhibits lesser accuracy in predicting the melt pool geometries, it can predict the cooling rates and nodal temperatures as accurately as to the ED model. Moreover, under large time integration steps, the HL model becomes more than 1,500 times faster than the ED model.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can fabricate products with tailored mechanical and surface properties. In fact, surface texture, roughness, pore size, the resulting fractional density, and microhardness highly depend on the processing conditions, which are very difficult to deal with. Therefore, this paper aims at investigating the relevance of the volumetric energy density (VED) that is a concise index of some governing factors with a potential operational use. This paper proves the fact that the observed experimental variation in the surface roughness, number and size of pores, the fractional density, and Vickers hardness can be explained in terms of VED that can help the investigator in dealing with several process parameters at once.

AbstractDue to the inhibiting behavior of Cu, NiCu alloys represent an interesting candidate in carburizing atmospheres. However, manufacturing by conventional casting is limited. It is important to know whether the corrosion behavior of conventionally and additively manufactured parts differ. Samples of binary NiCu alloys and Monel Alloy 400 were generated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and exposed to a carburizing atmosphere (20 vol% CO–20% H2–1% H2O–8% CO2–51% Ar) at 620 °C and 18 bar for 960 h. Powders and printed samples were investigated using several analytic techniques such as EPMA, SEM, and roughness measurement. Grinding of the material after building (P1200 grit surface finish) generally reduced the metal dusting attack. Comparing the different compositions, a much lower attack was found in the case of the binary model alloys, whereas the technical Monel Alloy 400 showed a four orders of magnitude higher mass loss during exposure despite its Cu content of more than 30 wt%.
