The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the survival rate of single-unit porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) and metal crowns placed by dental students at an Australian university undergraduate dental clinic over a five-year period. Complications and the incidences of crown failures were recorded. Clinical records pertaining to single-unit PFM and metal crowns inserted over a five-year period were reviewed, including patient-related, tooth-related, and procedural factors for each crown. Crowns were evaluated as surviving, surviving with complications, or failed. Kaplan–Meier statistical analysis was used to estimate survival rate., This study is based on a sample of 232 (78.4%) PFM crowns and 64 (21.6%) metal crowns inserted between 2014 and 2018. Cumulatively, 224 (75.7%) were surviving, 48 (16.2%) were surviving but previously had complications, and 24 (8.1%) failed. The 5-year cumulative survival rate of all PFM and metal crowns was 83.9% (0.839 ± 0.038, Kaplan–Meier). The average survival time for all crowns was 4.432 ± 0.089 years. Comparatively, PFM crowns had a higher survival rate at 1 year (0.972 ± 0.010) and 2 years (0.919 ± 0.017), compared to metal crowns at 1 year (0.964 ± 0.011) and 2 years (0.894± 0.018). The survival rate of metal crowns remained constant from 2 years to 4 years and thereafter, whereas there was a continued decline in the survival rate of PFM crowns to 83.2% (0.832 ± 0.038) at 4 years and thereafter. Crowns placed on premolars had the highest cumulative survival rate whereas those placed on molars exhibited the lowest survival rate for the duration of the study period. Despite single-unit PFM crowns having a higher 1- and 2-year survival rate compared to metal crowns, metal crowns had a higher survival rate at 4 years and thereafter. Survival rates are comparable to previous studies.

Objective: At present, the association of body mass index (BMI) with the prognosis of liver cirrhosis is controversial. Our retrospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of BMI on the outcome of liver cirrhosis.Methods: In the first part, long-term death was evaluated in 436 patients with cirrhosis and without malignancy from our prospectively established single-center database. In the second part, in-hospital death was evaluated in 379 patients with cirrhosis and with acute gastrointestinal bleeding (AGIB) from our retrospective multicenter study. BMI was calculated and categorized as underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5 ≤ BMI < 23.0 kg/m2), and overweight/obese (BMI ≥ 23.0 kg/m2).Results: In the first part, Kaplan–Meier curve analyses demonstrated a significantly higher cumulative survival rate in the overweight/obese group than the normal weight group (p = 0.047). Cox regression analyses demonstrated that overweight/obesity was significantly associated with decreased long-term mortality compared with the normal weight group [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.635; 95% CI: 0.405–0.998; p = 0.049] but not an independent predictor after adjusting for age, gender, and Child–Pugh score (HR = 0.758; 95%CI: 0.479–1.199; p = 0.236). In the second part, Kaplan–Meier curve analyses demonstrated no significant difference in the cumulative survival rate between the overweight/obese and the normal weight groups (p = 0.094). Cox regression analyses also demonstrated that overweight/obesity was not significantly associated with in-hospital mortality compared with normal weight group (HR = 0.349; 95%CI: 0.096-1.269; p = 0.110). In both of the two parts, the Kaplan–Meier curve analyses demonstrated no significant difference in the cumulative survival rate between underweight and normal weight groups.Conclusion: Overweight/obesity is modestly associated with long-term survival in patients with cirrhosis but not an independent prognostic predictor. There is little effect of overweight/obesity on the short-term survival of patients with cirrhosis and with AGIB.

This retrospective study evaluated the survival rate of short, sandblasted acid-etched surfaced implants with 6 and 8 mm lengths with at least 120 days of follow-up. Data concerning patient, implant and surgery characteristics were retrieved from clinical records. Sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA)-surfaced tissue-level 6 mm (TL6) or 8 mm (TL8) implants or bone-level tapered 8 mm (BLT8) implants were used. Absolute and relative frequency distributions were calculated for qualitative variables and mean values and standard deviations for quantitative variables. A Cox regression model was performed to verify whether type, length and/or width influence the implant survival. The cumulative implant survival rate was assessed by time-to-event analyses (Kaplan–Meier estimator). In all, 513 patients with a mean age of 58.00 ± 12.44 years received 1008 dental implants with a mean follow-up of 21.57 ± 10.77 months. Most implants (78.17%) presented a 4.1 mm diameter, and the most frequent indication was a partially edentulous arch (44.15%). The most frequent locations were the posterior mandible (53.97%) and the posterior maxilla (31.55%). No significant differences were found in survival rates between groups of type, length and width of implant with the cumulative rate being 97.7% ± 0.5%. Within the limitations of this study, the evaluated short implants are a predictable option with high survival rates during the follow-up without statistical differences between the appraised types, lengths and widths.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the clinical effect of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) (Cyberknife) on hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombosis (HCC-PVTT). Data from 50 patients with HCC-PVTT who received Cyberknife from August 2013 to April 2016 was collected for efficacy analysis. Moreover, survival correlation was evaluated by Cox proportionalhazards model. The total effective rate in 1–3 months after treatment was 64.00%, including 7 cases in complete remission, 12 cases in partial remission, 13 cases in stable conditions, and 18 cases with enlargement; a 4–24-months follow-up (with an average of 11.58 ± 2.58 months) showed that median survival, 1-year cumulative survival rate, and 2-year cumulative survival rate were, respectively, 11.86 ± 1.79 months, 48.00%, and 20.00%. Moreover, the Cox proportional-hazards model indicates that it was with no correlation between lesion diameter, classification of liver function, pre-operative alphafetoprotein, types of hepatitis, number of tumors, ascites, types of tumor emboli, total dose, and survival rate. SRS is effective for HCC-PVTT and serves as an ideal treatment clinically to help preserve patients’ lives, which is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

Abstract Background: The management of hip fractures is nowadays mainly performed in Orthogeriatric Units, one of whose fundamental tools is the application of geriatric scores. The purpose of this study is to establish the potential usefulness of Barthel Index, Katz Index, Lawton-Brody Index and Physical Red Cross Scale geriatric scores as predictors of survival rate and readmission rate in older patients after hip fracture surgery. Methods: We designed a prospective single-center observational study, including 207 older adults over age 65 who underwent hip fracture surgery in the first half of 2014 and followed up to September 2018. Cumulative survival and readmission rates were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier; group comparison, by Log-Rank and hazard ratio, by Cox regression. Results: We found statistical differences (p<0.001) for cumulative survival rate by every geriatric score analyzed (BI HR=0.98 [0.97,0.99]; KI HR=1.24 [1.13-1.37]; LBI HR= 1.25 [1.16, 1.36]; PCRS HR=1.67 [1.37,2.04]). Furthermore, we could determinate an inflection point for survival estimation by Barthel Index (BI 0-55/60-100*, p<0.001, HR=2.37 [1.59,3.53]), Katz Index (KI A-B*/C-G, p<0.001, HR=2.66 [1.80, 3.93], and Lawton-Brody Index (LBI 0-3/4-8*, p<0.001, HR=3.40 [2.09,5.25]). We reveal a correlation of the Charlson Index (p=0.002) and Katz Index (p=0.041) with number of readmissions for the study period. Conclusions: The geriatric scores analyzed are related to the cumulative survival rate after hip fracture surgery for more than 4 years, independently of other clinical and demographic factors. Katz Index in combination with Charlson Index could also be a potential predictor of the number of readmissions after surgery for hip fracture patients.

This study was aimed to evaluate different types and combinations of live foods in relation to the survivability of newly hatched Lysmata vittata and Lysmata intermedia larvae. The experiment consisted of three trials (different species, combinations, and densities of live foods) arranged in a completely randomized design. The first and second trials were subjected to L. vittata with three treatments for each trial (1A, 1B, 1C for trial-1; 1D, 1E, 1F for trial-2). The third trial consisted of two treatments (2A and 2B) tested on L. intermedia. Each treatment had three replicates. The results showed that the survival rates were low in all treatments. However, each treatment showed a significant effect (P<0.05) on the average survival rate of L. vittata and L. intermedia larvae. In the first trial, treatment 1C was the only one that had survived larvae after day 35 with 4.44% of final average survival rate (FASR). Four of the larvae reached the post-larval stage. In the second trial, treatment 1F showed a better condition than the other treatments with 5.56% FASR. Nevertheless, no larvae in the second trial had transformed to post-larval stage before the experiment ended at day 46. In the third trial, no larvae survived to reach the post-larval stage. In spite of this, treatment 2B had better daily average survival rate (DASR) than treatment 2A. This research concludes that the use of copepods as live food at an early larval stage and Artemia at a later stage is relatively more effective to improve the survival rate of peppermint shrimp larvae.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between endocan expression and outcome in patients with chronic liver disease is not fully understood.OBJECTIVE: To examine whether serum endocan level is predictive of outcome in patients with liver cirrhosis.METHODS: A total of 68 patients with liver cirrhosis were enrolled. Outcome predictors were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model. The overall survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and differences were evaluated using the log-rank test.RESULTS: During the median follow-up period (7.1 years), nine patients had hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 10 patients died. Of the deceased patients, nine died due to hepatic decompensation or associated conditions. No significant factors were found to be predictive of the occurrence of HCC. In contrast, an elevated serum endocan level (≥2.0 ng/mL; HR 2.34 [95% CI 1.05 to 7.03]; P=0.037) and high Child-Pugh grade B/C (HR 2.65 [95% CI 1.30 to 6.89; P=0.006) were predictive of poor survival. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that the respective cumulative survival rates at five and 10 years were 97.1% and 87.4% in patients with serum endocan levels <2.0 ng/mL and 85.8% and 64.4% in patients with levels ≥2.0 ng/mL (P=0.009), respectively. Moreover, the cumulative survival rates were significantly different among the patient groups divided according to serum endocan level and Child-Pugh grade (P=0.002).CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that serum endocan level may be a survival predictor for patients with liver cirrhosis.

Abstract The All-on-Four treatment concept provides patients with an immediately loaded fixed prosthesis supported by 4 implants. This single-center retrospective study evaluated the concept while using the NobelActive implant (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden). Seven hundred eight implants placed in 165 subjects demonstrated a cumulative survival rate of 99.6% (99.3% in maxilla and 100% in the mandible) for up to 29 months of loading. The definitive prosthesis survival rate was 100%.

The research was conducted in order to develop an effective protocol for introducing strawberry plants into in vitro culture. The objects of the research were the most popular varieties of strawberries of domestic and foreign selection: Tsaritsa, Bereginya, Florence, Frida, Kimberly, etc. Mercurial preparations mertiolate at a concentration of 0.01% and sulema at a concentration of 0.1% were used as sterilizing agents. The isolation of explants was performed in several periods: the beginning of the growth was in February, active growth was in June, the decline of growth was in August. The studies have shown that the maximum aseptic cultures were obtained when processing strawberry plant material with mercurycontaining sulema preparation in the concentration of 0.1%. At the first stage of micropropagation, explants had a high viability during all periods of the isolation, the average survival rate for varieties was 74.8-80.7%. A significant influence of the genotype (varietal characteristics) on the survival rates of explants was noted. The number of explants suitable for cloning did not depend on the overall level of regeneration. Stabilization of the crop during winter introduction was much faster than in other periods. Using the winter term of the isolation of strawberry explants allowed to increase the yield of explants capable of further cloning, accelerate the stabilization of the culture in vitro and reduce the time for obtaining micro-plants suitable for planting in non-sterile conditions. On average, 75.2% of explants capable of further cloning for the varieties were obtained. As a result of the research, the conditions and methods for obtaining the largest number of viable sterile strawberry explants were worked out, which will be included into the process of reproduction in vitro and further research.
