In this paper, we show that Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) can be realized in mediums with Rydberg excitons. With realistic, reliable parameters which show good agreement with optical and electro-optical experiments, as well as the proper choice of Rydberg exciton states in the Cu2O crystal, we indicate how the EIT can be performed. The calculations show that, due to a large group index, one can expect the slowing down of a light pulse by a factor of about 10 4 in this medium.

A multiband tunable electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) effect in metamaterial at microwave frequency range is investigated. The sandwich structure contains silicon dioxide and gold layers. The metamaterial structure has multiband EIT phenomenon due to coupling with U-Shaped split-ring resonators (SRRs) and cut wire (CW). Two different modes can be obtained in CW and a single band EIT effects in SRRs. Results show that the different resonances in the structure lead to multiband EIT. By adding the finding of the graphene layer on top of the structures, EIT window can be changed obviously. It is shown that the graphene can adjust EIT phenomenon. The group index is calculated to exhibit the slow light effect. The demonstrated phenomenon can provide valuable variety of important applications, including microwave communication technology, microwave devices, slow light and switch devices.

The analytical expression for the group index in a degenerated three-level lambda-type atomic system is derived as a function of the parameters of laser fields and external magnetic field. The influence of the external magnetic field on the group index is investigated. It is shown that by changing the magnitude or sign of the external magnetic field, the transparency window with normal dispersion switches to enhanced absorption with anomalous dispersion at the line center and hence the light propagation can be converted between subluminal and superluminal modes. Two simple polarization-independent electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) metamaterials are numerically and experimentally demonstrated at the terahertz region. The first structure is composed of two metal concentric rings on a substrate, while the second one is composed of one metal ring with a cross in it. The bright–bright coupling behavior appears in the two symmetric polarization-independent EIT structures while it is generally observed in asymmetrically structures. In addition, the large group index is extracted to verify the slow-light effect of the two EIT structures. These simple EIT structures may have potential applications in certain areas, including sensing, slow-light and filtering devices.

An analogy of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) based on all-dielectric metamaterial is theoretically demonstrated in this paper. The U-shaped Silicon-based metamaterial unit cell comprises a dipole antenna supported by one horizontal nanoscale bar and a quadrupolar antenna supported by two vertical nanoscale bars. The near-field coupling between the two antennas and the reduction of absorption loss lead to a narrow EIT-like transmission window with a high quality-factor of 130, which exhibits a refractive index sensitivity with a figure-of-merit of 29. The group delay of 0.75 ps and the group index of 2035 are obtained in the transmission window. Due to these unique optical properties, the proposed metamaterial structure can find many applications including slow-light devices, optical sensors, enhancement of non-linear processes, and storage of quantum information.

AbstractWe implement slow-light under electromagnetically induced transparency condition to measure the motion of cold atoms in an optical lattice undergoing Bloch oscillation. The motion of atoms is mapped out through the phase shift of light without perturbing the external and internal state of the atoms. Our results can be used to construct a continuous motional sensor of cold atoms.

AbstractA multilayer structure of a square ring of graphene with nesting vanadium dioxide (VO2) was investigated in this study. This structure exhibits electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which stems from a bright mode coupling with a dark mode. The permittivity values of graphene and VO2 can be modulated via chemical potential and temperature, respectively. The EIT effect can be tuned based on the chemical potential of graphene and temperature of VO2, resulting in a dual-tunable EIT effect. Simulation results confirmed that this dual-tunable EIT phenomenon is insensitive to polarization. These results may have potential applications in terahertz devices, such as slow light devices, switching devices, and sensors.
