New push-pull second harmonic generation (SHG) chromophores 2 were synthesized in order to study their linear and nonlinear optical properties. The donor-acceptor π-conjugated systems 2 were prepared in good to excellent yields by a simple aldol-type condensation of the precursor aldehydes 1 with 6-nitro-2-methyl-1,3-benzothiazole in the presence of NaOH. Hyper-Rayleigh scattering in dioxane solutions was used to evaluate their second-order nonlinear optical properties. The experimental results showed that the optical (linear and nonlinear) properties are influenced by the electron-donor strength of the groups of the π-conjugated bridge. The vinyl-benzothiazole derivative 2b, with methoxyl as the donor group, exhibited the largest first hyperpolarizability β (1660 × 10−30 esu, 40 times greater than the standard reference pNA molecule) and the highest decomposition temperature (Td = 360 °C). The good balance between nonlinearity and thermal stability makes this compound a promising candidate as second harmonic generator (SHG) for nonlinear optics.

New acidochromic and photochromic compounds with nonlinear optical properties have been designed and synthesized. The hyperpolarizabilities of the zwitterionic colored forms have been quantified with polarized hyper-Rayleigh scattering experiments. The static value of oxazolidino-indoline 2 is found to be as high as Disperse Red One. This opens the way to novel multi-addressable NLO-systems.

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the four isomorphic orthorhombic (point groupmm2) potassium rare earth nitrates K2[RE(NO3)5(H2O)2], with RE = La, Ce, Pr or Nd, have been investigated. Refractive indices in a wavelength range from 0.35 to 2.5 µm and the transmission spectra between 0.25 to 3.0 µm were measured. Using the Maker fringe technique, the d_{ijk}^{\rm\, SHG} coefficients of second-harmonic generation for a fundamental of the Nd–YAP laser (λ = 1079.5 nm) were determined for all four compounds. The d_{ijk}^{\rm\, SHG} coefficients of all four substances are about three times larger than those of KDP, as was first published by Ebberset al.[IEEE J. Quantum Electron.(1993),29, 497–507] for K2[La(NO3)5(H2O)2]. These nitrates are promising materials for application to nonlinear optics (e.g.second-harmonic generation of Nd laser radiation). The nonlinear optical properties of these compounds seem to have their origin mainly in the nitrate groups, as indicated by a simple model (summing the molecular hyperpolarizabilities of the NO3group). Neglecting local field effects, the hyperpolarizability of the NO3group was calculated as β222= 2.52 × 10−40 m4 V−1.

Hyper-Rayleigh scattering is used to investigate the nonlinear optical properties of novel metal (ruthenium, nickel and gold) σ-arylacetylide complexes. The influence of the organometallic donor group and conjugating bridge on the quadratic hyperpolarizability is studied. For all organic ligands, the addition of the metal (donor) group is shown to increase the static hyperpolarizability by a factor of 2, 4 and 7 for gold, nickel and ruthenium complexes, respectively. Moreover, replacement of phenyl with a heterocyclic ring is demonstrated to enlarge the hyperpolarizability in the case of gold and ruthenium compounds.

AbstractThe linear and nonlinear optical properties of a series of Sb nanometer dimension metal colloids in silica were measured. The colloids were fabricated by the implantation of Sb in silica with nominal doses of 3, 6 and 9x1016 ions/cm2 at 320 keV. The linear optical response was measured from 200 to 900 nm. The nonlinear optical properties were measured using the z-scan technique at wavelengths of 596 and 617 nm. The results are compared to linear and nonlinear properties of a sample implanted with 6x1016 Ag ions/cm 2. Both absorption and the nonlinear index of refraction increase with increasing volume fraction for the Sb implanted samples. The lower linear absorption and comparable nonlinear index of refraction for the Sb colloid-glass composites may be better for devices than composites using metal colloids that have a surface plasmon resonance.

In this work we investigate the solvent media effects on the nonlinear optical properties of a chalcone derivative, (2E)-3-(3-methylphenyl)-1-(4-nitrophenyl) prop-2-en-1-one (3MPNP), using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) at DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level. The behavior of the hyper-Rayleigh scattering first hyperpolarizability and the average second hyperpolarizability, are studied as function of the dielectric constant of the solvent medium in both dynamic and static cases.
