In recent decades, the genetic algorithm (GA) has been extensively used in the design optimization of electromagnetic devices. Despite the great merits possessed by the GA, its processing procedure is highly time-consuming. On the contrary, the widely applied Taguchi optimization method is faster with comparable effectiveness in certain optimization problems. This study explores the abilities of both methods within the optimization of a permanent magnet coupling, where the optimization objectives are the minimization of coupling volume and maximization of transmitted torque. The optimal geometry of the coupling and the obtained characteristics achieved by both methods are nearly identical. The magnetic torque density is enhanced by more than 20%, while the volume is reduced by 17%. Yet, the Taguchi method is found to be more time-efficient and effective within the considered optimization problem. Thanks to the additive manufacturing techniques, the initial design and the sophisticated geometry of the Taguchi optimal designs are precisely fabricated. The performances of the coupling designs are validated using an experimental setup.

Concrete durability is one of the most important concerns in the field of construction. The environmentally friendly materials that can provide the durability are of great value in the construction of concrete structures. The use of natural pozzolans is one of the cheapest and most efficient methods in this field, which offers a good performance from environmental and economic point of view and satisfies required engineering parameters. In this study, the effect of using natural pozzolan in the manufacture of concrete exposed to sulfate and chloride ion of Oman sea water was investigated. The Taguchi optimization method was used to reduce the number of samples prepared, reduce the cost of experiments and achieve an optimal mix design. The four parameters, namely water to cement ratio, different percentages of natural pozzolan, super-plasticizer and cement grade with different ratios, were considered as problem variables. The Taguchi optimization method proposed 8 mix designs based on the defined levels for the variables. By constructing 96 samples, two parameters of permeability and water absorption from Oman Sea and drinking water were investigated in the samples. By introducing the results of the experiments into the Taguchi method, the final optimal design was presented by this method, and by constructing 12 additional samples and conducting permeability and water absorption experiments, the behavior of this optimal mix design was verified. The appropriate performance of the Taguchi method was demonstrated by obtaining the optimal mix designs from the Taguchi method, constructing this mix design and comparing the results with the regulation limitations. The results showed that it is acceptable to use natural pozzolan under moderate to severe chloride and sulfate ion attacks, but it is not recommended in the extreme environmental conditions.

According to the phenomenon of falling into local optimum during solving large-scale optimization problems and the shortcomings of poor convergence of Immune Genetic Algorithm, a new kind of probability selection method based on the concentration for the genetic operation is presented. Considering the features of chaos optimization method, such like not requiring the solved problems with continuity or differentiability, which is unlike the conventional method, and also with a solving process within a certain range traverse in order to find the global optimal solution, a kind of Chaos Immune Genetic Algorithm based on Logistic map and Hénon map is proposed. Through the application to TSP problem, the results have showed the superior to other algorithms.

This paper presents a multi-response optimization method that uses the grey-based Taguchi method as the integrative product form design optimization method, and it serves as a tool for product form design to determine the optimal combination of design parameters in Kansei engineering (KE). This method is unique in that it combines the Taguchi method (TM) and grey relational analysis (GRA), allowing it to take advantage of the benefits of both methods. The TM is used to design experiments and generate combinative product form design samples which can be used to improve product quality. The GRA is applied to multi-response optimization problems. Factor effect analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are used to determine which combinations of design parameters will result in the optimal product design. To demonstrate the applicability of the grey-based TM, a case study of a car form design is presented, and a confirmation test is performed to verify the performance of the optimal product design. The results show that the grey-based TM can deal with optimization problems with multiple Kansei responses and determine an optimal car form design that is representative of the consumers' perception in a systematic manner. The confirmation test results also show that the optimal product design generated by the grey-based TM can be used to improve the overall quality of a product form.

Introduction. As early as 1744, the great Leonhard Euler noted that nothing at all took place in the universe in which some rule of maximum or minimum did not appear [12]. Great many today’s scientific and engineering problems faced by humankind are of optimization nature. There exist many different methods developed to solve optimization problems, the number of these methods is estimated to be in the hundreds and continues to grow. A number of approaches to classify optimization methods based on various criteria (e.g. the type of optimization strategy or the type of solution obtained) are proposed, narrower classifications of methods solving specific types of optimization problems (e.g. combinatorial optimization problems or nonlinear programming problems) are also in use. Total number of known optimization method classes amounts to several hundreds. At the same time, methods falling into classes far from each other may often have many common properties and can be reduced to each other by rethinking certain characteristics. In view of the above, the pressing task of the modern science is to develop a general approach to classify optimization methods based on the disclosure of the involved search strategy basic principles, and to systematize existing optimization methods. The purpose is to show that genetic algorithms, usually classified as metaheuristic, population-based, simulation, etc., are inherently the stochastic numerical methods of direct search. Results. Alternative statements of optimization problem are given. An overview of existing classifications of optimization problems and basic methods to solve them is provided. The heart of optimization method classification into symbolic (analytical) and numerical ones is described. It is shown that a genetic algorithm scheme can be represented as a scheme of numerical method of direct search. A method to reduce a given optimization problem to a problem solvable by a genetic algorithm is described, and the class of problems that can be solved by genetic algorithms is outlined. Conclusions. Taking into account the existence of a great number of methods solving optimization problems and approaches to classify them it is necessary to work out a unified approach for optimization method classification and systematization. Reducing the class of genetic algorithms to numerical methods of direct search is the first step in this direction. Keywords: mathematical programming problem, unconstrained optimization problem, constrained optimization problem, multimodal optimization problem, numerical methods, genetic algorithms, metaheuristic algorithms.

This paper presents a fast and rigorous design method for grating-based metal-free polarizing filter applications using two-step hybrid optimization techniques. Grating structures utilizing the total internal reflection in a lamellar configuration were used to achieve metal-free solution, which is a key technology in the chirped pulse amplification for high power laser system. Here two polarizing filters were designed: polarization sensitive and polarization insensitive. Those polarization performances were characterized by the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA), and the design parameters of grating structures, pitch, depth, and filling factor were optimized by two-step hybrid optimization procedure because the diffraction characteristics of grating-based polarizing filters are highly sensitive to small changes in design parameters. The Taguchi method is incorporated into selection process in the genetic algorithm, which indicates that the Taguchi method optimizes the design parameters in a coarse manner, and then, coarsely optimized parameters are finely optimized using the genetic algorithm. Therefore the proposed method could solve global numerical optimization problems with continuous variables. The proposed two-step hybrid optimization algorithm could effectively optimize the grating structures for the purpose of polarization filter applications, and the optimized grating structures could selectively filter the incident light up to 99.8% as to TE or TM waves.

This paper puts forward a distribution network reconfiguration method which takes into account voltage sag, and this method takes advantage of genetic algorithm in handling optimization problems and can optimize a superior distribution operation mode which makes the important load sag in the lowest degree besides satisfies the distribution network constraint. IEEE 16 nodes system is cited as an example. The simulation result shows that the distribution network operation mode got by the proposed method ensures the distribution network loss within reasonable limits as well as minimizes voltage sag in the important load node. This approach presented is of both efficient and practical.
