Rapid urbanization, coupled with income growth, will inevitably cause the residential energy consumption in the North Africa region to continue to increase, with adverse effects on the climate, human health, and the economy. In these regards, this paper explores the relationship between residential carbon dioxide emissions (RCO2), urbanization, economic growth, and residential energy use in four North African countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt) over the period 1990–2016. To do this, we used the bounds cointegration and the Toda–Yamamoto Granger causality test. The existence of cointegration relationships was confirmed for the four countries. In the long run, the environment Kuznets curve relationship between increased income per capita and RCO2 emissions was verified for only Morocco and Tunisia. The causality analysis also reveals a combination of neutral, unidirectional, and bidirectional relationships for all countries. The RCO2 emissions have not proved to be a limiting factor in any country’s economic growth. The findings of this study certainly contribute to advancing the existing literature by emphasizing the income–pollution nexus in African countries. Policy makers and government regulators should implement the necessary policies that accelerate the development of renewable technologies to drive sustainable cooling and heating as well as water management.

Abstract Research background: CO2 emissions are considered to be the main reason for global warming, and for this reason, their regulation is a very important issue for governments. Due to the increasing use of energy, carbon dioxide emissions have increased dramatically over the past century, with a direct link to economic growth and development. The relationship between CO2 emissions, growth and energy consumption is therefore at the heart of current economic issues. Purpose: This study aimed at examining the relationship among economic growth, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and energy consumption in selected MENA countries, in the period 1995–2017. Research methodology: To prove these relations, a stationary data panel methodology is used supported by unitary root and cointegration tests. Results: The results indicated that there is a long-term relationship between CO2 emissions, energy consumption and GDP. In addition, it is found that the elasticity of CO2 emissions with respect to energy consumption is less than one (inelastic), and the elasticity of CO2 emissions with respect to GDP suggests the existence of an Environmental Kuznets Curve. An important finding is that energy consumption has a positive but relatively low effect on CO2 emissions. To reduce CO2 emissions, the countries of the MENA region are being called upon to increase significantly the use of renewable energies and the establishment of a more efficient energy policy.

Renewable energy plays a crucial role in increasing economic growth while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The aim of this study is to examine the interaction between renewable energy consumption, economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions for selected Middle East and North Africa countries. For this aim, panel vector autoregression approach are used in the study. The annual data used in this study cover the period from 1988 to 2010 for Middle East and North Africa countries. Firstly, second generation unit root test are used to investigate stationarity properties of the variables and second generation panel cointegration test is applied to the data under consideration because of the cross-sectional dependence. Then a panel causality approach is proposed to examine the causal relationship between the variables. Finally, panel vector autoregression model, impulse-response and variance decomposition analysis are applied using generalized moment methods. The finding of this study shows that there is a bi-directional causality between growth and renewable energy consumption, which is consistent with the feedback hypothesis in terms of the energy consumption-growth nexus. It is found the evidence of unidirectional causality from carbon dioxide emissions to renewable energy consumption and from growth to carbon dioxide emissions. It is also found that the responses of growth to a shock of energy consumption are positive and the impact of renewable energy consumption on carbon dioxide emissions is negative.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between foreign financial flows (i.e., FDI inflows and remittances), human capital, and its effects on economic growth in 4 North African countries. Annual panel data from 2000 to 2018 are examined using the system GMM. First, we found strong evidence of a positive link between FDI and economic growth. Moreover, the results indicate that the complementarity between FDI and human capital positively influences economic growth. Second, the remittances are found to be positive factors for economic growth. In fact, higher human capital accumulation of receiving countries increases these positive impacts. Overall, the results indicate that foreign financial flows are positively correlated with human capital in influencing economic growth in the North African countries. Therefore, it becomes pertinent for policymakers to pursue a human capital policy to improve their absorptive capacities to exploit full benefits of foreign financial flows.

Using random year-to-year variation in temperature, we document the relationship between daily temperatures and annual mortality rates and daily temperatures and annual residential energy consumption. Both relationships exhibit nonlinearities, with significant increases at the extremes of the temperature distribution. The application of these results to “business as usual” climate predictions indicates that by the end of the century climate change will lead to increases of 3 percent in the age-adjusted mortality rate and 11 percent in annual residential energy consumption. These estimates likely overstate the long-run costs, because climate change will unfold gradually allowing individuals to engage in a wider set of adaptations. (JEL I12, Q41, Q54)

This study examines the relationship between urbanization, economic growth, industrial transformation, technological change, public services, demographical change, urban and natural environmental changes, and carbon emissions using a dataset of 182 prefecture-level cities in China between 2001 and 2010. Specifically, this paper differs from previous studies in two aspects. First, the extant literature has focused on how economic processes accompanying rapid urbanization affect carbon emissions in urban areas but gives little attention to the other dimensions of urbanization, including social and environmental changes, which may have important effects on carbon emissions. We assessed the effects of 17 key processes accompanying urbanization in a full range of economic, social, and environmental dimensions on carbon dioxide emissions in urban areas. The results showed that social processes accompanied with rapid urbanization had distinct effects on carbon emissions, compared to economic and environmental processes. Specifically, improvement in public services, indicated by education and cultural developments, reduces the increase in carbon emissions during urbanization, while economic growth and urban construction reinforces the growth in carbon emissions. Second, we examined the impact of various urbanization processes on carbon dioxide emissions using a unique dataset of 182 prefecture-level cities that covers a wide span of regions in China. The results of our analyses on the city level have important implications for the formulation of comprehensive policies aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emission in urban areas, focusing on different urbanization processes in economic, social, and environmental phases.
