Socially responsible consumption benefits the environment, the consumer, and the producer. In Mexico, smallholder farmers are vulnerable, and the consumption of organic food products is low. Analysing the purchase intention of organic food products contributes towards generating the most appropriate marketing strategies. Previous models provide evidence that the attitude of the consumer is the biggest predictor of purchase intention. However, little is known about the results of the mediating effect of desire on said relationship. The objective of the study is to analyse the mediating effect of desire on the relationship between attitude and purchase intention. 204 consumers of organic food products were surveyed using a structured, self-administrated questionnaire or through face-to-face interviews, in established retail stores, alternative street markets, and via the web. It was found that when the benefits of organic food products to the consumer, environment, and smallholder farmers are evaluated favourably, then consumer desire is higher, and thus also purchase intention. Consumers have the highest purchase intention for organic food products when their desire to buy them to achieve a goal related with social, personal, and environmental benefits intervenes.

Organic food products refers to food raised, grown and stored and/or processed without the use of synthetically produced chemicals or fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, growth hormones and regulators or generic modification. Generally people are aware about the benefits of these products. But still the products have not achieved the market share in India, as expected. This people is an effort to identify the factors, which influences the purchase of organic food products. For this the researchers have developed a questionnaire and administered on the respondents. Both online and off line data collection was done, to cover the major areas, so that data can be collected from distinct places. The paper explored the awareness level about organic food products, influence of demographic variables on organic food consumption and factors affecting organic food purchase intention.


This paper investigates the factors that influence purchasing behavior of organic food in Indonesia. Data were obtained by distributing questionnaires in April-June 2018 to 106 consumers who had bought organic food in the past. Data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). This study examines the factors that influence the actual buying behavior of organic food products such as health awareness, knowledge of organic food, subjective norms, perceived price and availability. In addition, attitude towards organic food and purchase intention was also tested as a medium for these five factors to influence actual buying behavior. Socio-demographic factors were also tested to determine their influence. The results showed that health consciousness and availability affected people's behavior towards organic food. This behavior is then proven to affect purchase intention which also affects actual buying behavior. With this research, it is expected to be able to explore the interest of Indonesian people to improve health and help marketers of organic food.

The rapid growth of the organic food market in Italy and in other developed countries has drawn the attention of researchers and practitioners. The diffusion of pro-environmental concerns and sustainable lifestyles among consumers are often cited as two of the main drivers of the increase in demand for organic food products. Consequently, unveiling the factors that influence consumers’ demand of, and preference for organic food is essential for all the actors involved in the supply chain. This paper presents the results of a research model which relates organic food purchase intention to consumers’ green consciousness, health motivations, food safety concerns, organic product knowledge, family and social context and perception of the intrinsic quality of food. A questionnaire, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the extant literature on organic food choice, was developed and presented to a sample of 600 Italian consumers. Causal relations among variables were then tested using Structural Equation Modelling. The results suggest that, besides the existence of green consciousness, other variables may affect consumers’ preference for organic food: among these, specific and closely interlinked elements, such as food safety concerns and perceived quality heavily affected the intention to buy organic food products.

Purpose – The aim of this study is to examine profiles of consumers in organic foods market segments and determine their attitudes toward organic food consumption. Consequently, we explore whether there are differences among these consumer segments in terms of their health orientation, socially responsible consumption, environmental responsibility and values and lifestyles. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 316 consumers were surveyed at supermarkets and malls in one of the largest metropolitan areas of a European city. Findings – The cluster analysis performed indicates that there are three segments based on consumer attitudes toward organic foods: favorable, neutral and unfavorable. The results show that the consumer segment with more favorable attitudes toward organic foods exhibits higher levels of health orientation and socially responsible consumption behavior when compared to other segments. Practical implications – It important for marketers to understand organic foods market segments so that they can target them with the appropriate marketing mix. For this reason, we attempt to identify consumer segments based on their attitudes and behavior concerning organic foods. In doing so, we examine the profiles of consumers in each organic food market segment and their attitudes toward organic food consumption. Originality/value – Organic food consumption is growing at a fast pace despite economic problems around the world. This study has identified three market segments (consumer profiles) with different attitudes and behavior towards organic foods.

As climate change is one of the major challenges of our time,  green products that benefit sustainable production, such as organic agriculture is not only a trend but a necessity. The purpose of this study was to investigate consumer’s value perceptions and their intentions to purchase organic food products. In addition, the study examined the moderating role of price sensitivity between perceived value and purchase intention. Survey data from 203 people in the Jabotabek were used to test our hypotheses, We found that only one value (emotional) had a significantly positive effect on organic food product purchase intention. The moderating effect of purchase experience was found only on the path between emotional value and organic food product purchase intention. The findings offer implications for academics, practitioners, and marketers in determining strategies that encourage people to purchase organic food products. We conclude that marketers should design strategies that maximize the emotional value of organic food products.


The organic foods are perceived as more nutritious, healthy, and nature-friendly than conventional food. Consumers, therefore, are switching over to organic food products and are willing to pay a premium price. Findings of my study reveal more women were open to buying organic food products than men – the percentage was 77 per cent for women and 23 per cent for men. Buying in organic stores located in and around Coimbatore. However, the consumers have concerns on organic produce, primarily the certification and authenticity of organic food products has to be improved. They lack awareness towards originality and certification process involved in Organic food products. Also, this market is huge and untapped. So, there are innumerable benefits for all the stakeholders; however, a few challenges.This study provides a better understanding of consumers' attitude, purchase intention and actual buying behaviour towards organic food products. For this purpose, a survey data were collected from 773 Coimbatore consumers through structured questionnaire. Statistical tools adopted to execute the results. And necessary findings provided with data interpretations.

Purpose – This paper aims to describe the transformation towards consuming local and organic food (LOF) in the catering of a rural town. Product development cooperation, procurement, consumption, and prices are illustrated. Achieved local, social and environmental benefits are depicted. Design/methodology/approach – Theoretical framework includes the EU's strategy for corporate social responsibility concerning public procurement. Recent research on LOF and its procurement are summarized. The sources for empirical data included web pages depicting the case town and an interviewee, namely the food service manager. Findings – The results indicated that in 2011 local food products amounted to 46 per cent, whereas organic food products accounted for 14 per cent of the food procurement in the case town school's catering. The percentage of local food products in the whole town's catering amounted to 13. Benefits for the local community included money supporting the local economy, which thus facilitated the producers developing their businesses. However, higher prices were paid. Social benefits entailed that LOF contains the least amount of additives possible and LOF also advocates local food culture. Environmental benefits included, e.g. the following aspects: protecting the natural environment; decreasing packaging and bio waste; and diminished consuming water and energy. Practical implications – Increasing consumption of LOF required the following actions: integrating LOF into the town's strategy; allocating extra resources; training catering personnel; developing products with producers; and organising local procurement procedures. Originality/value – The results offer ideas for small municipalities how to increase the consumption of LOF gradually, and thus achieve benefits for the local community. The results may interest also those selling-in to that market sector.
