The changes in appearance of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) interferes with how people around them react to their body, how social interactions take place, and how each person perceives and accepts their body. The definition of itself can be severely challenged when the body changes as a result of illness and the person does not look healthier anymore. People living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) are an especially vulnerable group when it comes to “distress” and the psychosocial impact of appearance, yet the assessment of body image changes in these people was subjective in Brazil. The aim of this paper was to assess the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of Derriford Appearance Scale 24 (DAS-24) for a sample of Brazilians living with HIV/AIDS. A sample of 400 patients were recruited from an HIV/AIDS ambulatory, aged between 18 and 78 years, of both sexes. The psychometric properties of DAS-24 were investigated while using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), with unweighted least square estimation and listwise deletion for missing data. The adjustment of three structural models previously established for DAS-24 (single-factor, two-factor, and three-factor) was investigated. Evidences of construct validity—convergent and discriminant—and internal consistency—Cronbach’s alpha and construct reliability—were also generated for the measure model. The results showed that the one-factor model had the best adjustment, after eliminating items 8, 17, and 20, and accepting the covariance of errors between items 4 and 10; 9 and 23; 11 and 14; and, 14 and 22. Additionally, validity and reliability evidence were satisfactory for the model. The Brazilian Portuguese version of DAS-24 seems to be a psychometrically sound scale for measuring body image distress for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA).

Abstract Introduction Antiretroviral therapy (ART) helps reduce the amount of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that enters the body in order to avoid acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and prevents the occurrence of opportunistic infections and complications. This study aims to describe the correlation between self-esteem and motivation with adherence of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in ART. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 91 PLWHA who joined a non-government organization (NGO) support group, determined through a purposive sampling technique. The demography, and questionnaires about self-esteem, motivation and adherence to ART were employed to collect the raw data. The data were then analyzed using Spearman’s rho test with the degree of significance at p < 0.05. Results The result showed that self-esteem (p = 0.000, r = 0.445) and motivation (p = 0.019, r = 0.246) had correlation with adherence of PLWHA with ART. Conclusion PLWHA can increase self-esteem and motivation so that they can improve ART adherence. Further research is expected to use an instrument more objectively as a measurement tool for ART adherence in addition to a questionnaire so as to obtain more accurate and specific results.

The number of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is steadily increasing. HIV/AIDS is caused by a virus that infects the body and weakens the immune system, making it difficult to fight germs, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens. HIV and AIDS are still considered taboo diseases that should not be openly discussed. People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are discouraged from seeking treatment due to stigma and discrimination. Eliminating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS will improve the process of preventing and overcoming HIV/AIDS cases. In addition, therapeutic communication also affects interpersonal relationships. This research aims to figure out how the therapeutic communication efforts of People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) become survivors. The method used in this research is phenomenology, where the informants in this study are people with HIV/AIDS who live in Surabaya. This study concludes that therapeutic communication efforts to People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are by presenting volunteers who help people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) based on the same fate as People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The presence of volunteers (PLWHA) assists and bridges the gap between patients and therapy, fostering a sense of comfort for PLWHA. They also make other patients feel more at ease while they are receiving treatment in the hospital.
