Presently, most models of crowd evacuations within a building are created manually. This is inefficient. To address this issue, this paper focuses on the differences and relationship between industry foundation classes (IFC) and the macroscopic network model for evacuation (MNME), and studies the mapping and construction methods used to convert entity objects into nodes and arcs in the MNME. Furthermore, corresponding attribute information in the MNME are established from IFC. Based on this process, the MNME is created and used as an input to EVACNET4 to obtain simulation results. Finally, the results, together with a 3D building model, are expressed in a unified environment. Our study results show that a network as well as the relevant attributes can be automatically generated from IFC, and can be adapted to different working conditions. The method proposed in this paper can automatically map the semantic information model to the MNME and the simulation result as well as the building model can be integrated in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment.

Nowadays, 3D city models are used by the increasing number of applications. Most applications require not only geometric information but also semantic information. As a standard and tool for 3D city model, CityGML, provides a method for storing and managing both geometric and semantic information. Moreover, it also provides the multi-scale representation of 3D building model for efficient visualization. In CityGML, building models are represented in five LODs (Level of Detail), start from LOD0, LOD1, LOD2, LOD3, and LOD4. Each level has different accuracy and detail requirement for visualization. Usually, for obtaining multi-LOD of 3D building model, several data sources are integrated. For example, LiDAR data is used for generating LOD0, LOD1, and LOD2 as close-range photogrammetry data is used for generating more detailed model in LOD3 and LOD4. However, using additional data sources is increasing cost and time consuming. Since the development of TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanner), data collection for detailed model can be conducted in a relative short time compared to photogrammetry. Point cloud generated from TLS can be used for generating the multi-LOD of building model. This paper gives an overview about the representation of 3D building model in CityGML and also method for generating multi-LOD of building from TLS data. An experiment was conducted using TLS. Following the standard in CityGML, point clouds from TLS were processed resulting 3D model of building in different level of details. Afterward, models in different LOD were converted into XML schema to be used in CityGML. From the experiment, final result shows that TLS can be used for generating 3D models of building in LOD1, LOD2, and LOD3.

Current architecture studios are missing an important phase in the education process, which is constructing the students’ conceptual ideas on a real physical scale. The design-build approach enables the students to test their ideas, theories, material selection, construction methods, environmental constraints, simulation results, level of space functionality and other important aspects when used by real target clients in an existing context. This paper aims to highlight the importance of using the design-build method through discussing a design project case study carried out by the Masters of Architecture design programme students at Beirut Arab University, who have built prototype units for refugees on a 1:1 scale.

Pressure resistant performance of Measure While Drilling (MWD) microchip tracer to withstand the harsh downhole environment is one of the key issues of normal working. Therefore, it is an effective way to analyze pressure resistant performance of the tracer in the design phase. Compressive strength of the tracer was studied based on finite element method. Considering downhole complexity and working conditions during the processing of tracer roundness, material non-uniformity and other factors. In this study, researchers took sub-proportion failure criterion to determine the failure of tracer. Simulation results of two structures, with pin and without pin, show that both structures met the requirement of downhole compressive strength, and the structure with pin was better than the structure without pin. This study provides basis for downhole application of microchip tracers.

Abstract. In recent years 3D building modelling techniques are commonly used in various domains such as navigation, urban planning and disaster management, mostly confined to visualization purposes. The 3D building models are produced at various Levels of Detail (LOD) in the CityGML standard, that not only visualize complex urban environment but also allows queries and analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the methodology and the results of the comparison among two scenarios of LOD2 building models, which have been generated by the derivate UAS data acquired from two flight campaigns in different altitudes. The study was applied in Vrisa traditional settlement, Lesvos island, Greece, which was affected by a devastating earthquake of Mw = 6.3 on 12th June 2017. Specifically, the two scenarios were created by the results that were derived from two different flight campaigns which were: i) on 12th January 2020 with a flying altitude of 100 m and ii) on 4th February 2020 with a flying altitude of 40 m, both with a nadir camera position. The LOD2 buildings were generated in a part of Vrisa settlement consisted of 80 buildings using the footprints of the buildings, Digital Surface Models (DSMs), a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and orthophoto maps of the area. Afterwards, a comparison was implemented between the LOD2 buildings of the two different scenarios, with their volumes and their heights. Subsequently, the heights of the LOD2 buildings were compared with the heights of the respective terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) models. Additionally, the roofs of the LOD2 buildings were evaluated through visual inspections. The results showed that the 65 of 80 LOD2 buildings were generated accurately in terms of their heights and roof types for the first scenario and 64 for the second respectively. Finally, the comparison of the results proved that the generation of post-earthquake LOD2 buildings can be achieved with the appropriate UAS data acquired at a flying altitude of 100 m and they are not affected significantly by a lower one altitude.

The prefabricated urban utility tunnels (UUTs) have many advantages such as short construction period, low cost, high quality, and small land occupation. However, there is still a lack of in-depth analysis of the mechanical performance of the prefabricated urban utility tunnel (UUT) structure with bolted connections under different working conditions. In this paper, the force performance of a prefabricated UUT in Tongzhou District, Beijing, was studied under different working conditions using two methods: field monitoring and numerical simulation. The multichannel strain monitor was used for monitoring, and the internal wall concrete and bolt strain change data under the two conditions of installation and backfill were obtained. Combined with the construction process of the UUTs, a three-dimensional numerical model was established by COMSOL, where the build-in bolt assembly was used to simulate the longitudinal connection of the tunnel. The simulation results were compared with the measured data to verify the rationality of the computational model. The simulation results showed that the concrete and bolts on the inner wall of the tunnel work well under the two conditions of installation and backfilling; The deformation of the top plate of the prefabricated tunnel was approximately parabolic, with the largest vertical displacement (0.37 mm) in the middle and the most sensitive to the vertical load in the central part of the roof. The central portion of the side wall had the largest displacement (0.17 mm) in the inner concave. The tensile stress of bolt 3 increased the most (30.75 MPa) but was still much smaller than the yield strength of the bolt. The concrete and bolts of the UUT were found to work well through force analysis under operating conditions. In conclusion, analysis of structural forces and deformation failure modes will help design engineers understand the basic mechanisms and select the appropriate UUT structure.

The operation and maintenance of built assets is crucial for optimising their whole life cost and efficiency. Historically, however, there has been a general failure in the transfer information between the design-and-construct (D&C) and operate-and-maintain (O&M) phases of the asset lifecycle. The recent steady uptake of digital technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the D&C phase has been accompanied by an expectation that this would enable better transfer of information to those responsible for O&M. Progress has been slow, with practitioners being unsure as to how to incorporate BIM into their working practices. Three types of challenge are identified, related to communication, experience and technology. In examining the last aspect, it appears that a major problem has been that of interoperability between building information models and the many computer-aided facilities management (CAFM) systems in use. The successful and automatic transfer of information from a building model to an FM tool is, in theory, achievable through the medium of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) schema. However, this relies upon the authoring of the model in terms of how well its structure permits the identification of relevant objects, their relationships and attributes. The testing of over 100 anonymised building models revealed that very few did; prohibiting their straightforward mapping to the maintenance database we had selected for the test. An alternative, hybrid approach was developed using an open-source software toolkit to identify objects by their geometry as well as their classification, thus enabling their automatic transfer. In some cases, manual transfer proved necessary. The implications are that while these problems can be overcome on a case-by-case basis, interoperability between D&C and O&M systems will not become standard until it is accommodated by appropriate and informed authoring of building models.
