Clarifying the regional transmission mechanism of COVID-19 has practical significance for effective protection. Taking 103 county-level regions of Hubei Province as an example, and taking the fastest-spreading stage of COVID-19, which lasted from 29 January 2020, to 29 February 2020, as the research period, we systematically analyzed the population migration, spatio-temporal variation pattern of COVID-19, with emphasis on the spatio-temporal differences and scale effects of related factors by using the daily sliding, time-ordered data analysis method, combined with extended geographically weighted regression (GWR). The results state that: Population migration plays a two-way role in COVID-19 variation. The emigrants’ and immigrants’ population of Wuhan city accounted for 3.70% and 73.05% of the total migrants’ population respectively; the restriction measures were not only effective in controlling the emigrants, but also effective in preventing immigrants. COVID-19 has significant spatial autocorrelation, and spatio-temporal differentiation has an effect on COVID-19. Different factors have different degrees of effect on COVID-19, and similar factors show different scale effects. Generally, the pattern of spatial differentiation is a transitional pattern of parallel bands from east to west, and also an epitaxial radiation pattern centered in the Wuhan 1 + 8 urban circle. This paper is helpful to understand the spatio-temporal evolution of COVID-19 in Hubei Province, so as to provide a reference for similar epidemic prevention.

Health is the basis of a good life and a guarantee of a high quality of life. Furthermore, it is a symbol of social development and progress. How to further improve the health levels of citizens and reduce regional differences in citizens’ health status has become a research topic of great interest that is attracting attention globally. This study takes 31 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) of China as the research object. Through using GIS (Geographic Information System) technology, the entropy method, spatial autocorrelation, stepwise regression, and other quantitative analysis methods, measurement models and index systems are developed in order to perform an analysis of the spatio-temporal comprehensive measurements of Chinese citizens’ health levels. Furthermore, the associated influencing factors are analyzed. It has important theoretical and practical significance. The conclusions are as follows: (1) Between 2002 and 2018, the overall health levels of Chinese citizens have generally exhibited an upward trend. Moreover, for most provinces, the health levels of their citizens have improved dramatically, although some provinces, such as Tianjin and Henan, showed a fluctuating downward trend, suggesting that the health levels of citizens in these regions displayed a tendency to deteriorate. (2) The health levels of citizens from China’s various provinces showed clear spatial distribution characteristics of clustering, as well as an obvious spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity. As time goes by, the degree of spatial clustering with regard to citizens’ health levels tends to weaken. The health levels of Chinese citizens have developed a certain temporal stability, the overall health status of Chinese citizens shows a spatial differentiation of a northeast–southwest distribution pattern. (3) The average years of education and urbanization rate have a significant positive effect on the improvement of citizens’ health levels. The increase of average years of education and urbanization rate can promote the per capita income, which certainly could help improve citizens’ health status. The Engel coefficient, urban–rural income ratio, and amount of wastewater discharge all pose a significant negative effect on the improvement of citizens’ health levels, these three factors have played important roles in hindering the improvements of citizen health.

Coping with the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of cancers is a challenging medical task with continuing consequences for the development of population health status and economy of health in each country. The occurrence of cancers shows an upward trend in the world. A comprehensive fight against cancers should involve the spatial aspect which is best applied in the field of medical geography. The key indicators for the surveillance of cancers include mortality and incidence, but also prevalence. Incidence plays a more and more important role in the period of an increase in cancers. In the investigation of this issue specific analytical methods were used, such as spatial autocorrelation. Standardized cancer incidence in Slovakia was analyzed in the case of men and women. The years 1997, 2009 and the period 1997–2009 were chosen to compare the incidence. The results of partial analyses show the situation in districts of Slovakia from the perspective of incidence development and its spatial differentiation.

Video coding is an imperative part of the modern day communication system. Furthermore, it has vital roles in the fields of video streaming, multimedia, video conferencing and much more. Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is an emerging research area, due to its extensive application in most of the multimedia devices as well as public demand. The proposed coding technique is capable of eliminating the Spatio-temporal regularity of a video sequence. In Discrete Bandelet Transform (DBT), the directions are modeled by a three-directional vector field, known as structural flow. Regularity is decided by this flow where the data entropy is low. The wavelet vector decomposition of geometrically ordered data results in a lesser extent of significant coefficients. The directions of geometrical regularity are interpreted with a two-dimensional vector, and the approximation of these directions is found with spline functions. This paper deals with a novel SVC technique by exploiting the DBT. The bandelet coefficients are further encoded by utilizing Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) encoder, followed by global thresholding mechanism. The proposed method is verified with several benchmark datasets using the performance measures which gives enhanced performance. Thus, the experimental results bring out the superiority of the proposed technique over the state-of-arts.

Central China is progressively paving its way to the second carrier of Chinese population after the east coastal areas with disequilibrium theory as the guidance of provincial spatial development. Based on ESDA (exploratory spatial data analysis) with statistical data of GDP per capita of Hubei Province by county-level (2000-2010), this paper reveals the spatial differentiation characteristics of economic differences among counties in Hubei Province. According to global analysis of ArcGIS and GeoDA095i, economic space of the county presents the trend of climbing up and then declining. Besides, differences between counties are remarkable. The LISA clean-cut indicates different developed and underdeveloped districts. Finally, contrasting to policy response that the provinces cope with disequilibrium theory in Central China, the results show that the Central China continues to promote disequilibrium development is a reasonable choice, and it’s also indispensible to pay attention to controlling magnification of differences in regional development.

The long-term soil temperature monitoring in the area of more than 550 km in length within the region of Transbaikalia has been carried out. Sites for the monitoring were represented by the forest-steppe vegetation of different ecotopological and ecogeographical patterns. It was revealed that the dynamics of temperature regimens are highly synchronized reflecting the macroclimatic unity of the region. The sufficiently higher heat supply on the southerly exposed slopes comparing to northerly exposed ones was demonstrated. The distinctness between soil temperature regimens in different sites was revealed and attributed to the size of forested patches within the forest-steppe landscape, as well as discrepancies between eco-geographical features of sites along the sublatitudinal gradient. Differences between the vegetation types that occurred on the northern and southern slopes as well as between key sites scattered throughout the region were underlined. These differences are suggested to be connected with the spatial differentiation of the soil temperature. It was established that vegetation on the southern slopes is relatively more homogeneous being related to the single class Cleistogenetea squarrosae, while on the northern slopes plant communities related to three classes were developed, namely steppe class Cleistogenetea squarrosae, and two forest classes – Rhytidio-Laricetea and Vaccinio-Piceetea.

Understanding the spatio-temporal characteristics or patterns of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) epidemic is critical in effectively preventing and controlling this epidemic. However, no research analyzed the spatial dependency and temporal dynamics of 2019-nCoV. Consequently, this research aims to detect the spatio-temporal patterns of the 2019-nCoV epidemic using spatio-temporal analysis methods at the county level in Hubei province. The Mann–Kendall and Pettitt methods were used to identify the temporal trends and abrupt changes in the time series of daily new confirmed cases, respectively. The local Moran’s I index was applied to uncover the spatial patterns of the incidence rate, including spatial clusters and outliers. On the basis of the data from January 26 to February 11, 2020, we found that there were 11 areas with different types of temporal patterns of daily new confirmed cases. The pattern characterized by an increasing trend and abrupt change is mainly attributed to the improvement in the ability to diagnose the disease. Spatial clusters with high incidence rates during the period were concentrated in Wuhan Metropolitan Area due to the high intensity of spatial interaction of the population. Therefore, enhancing the ability to diagnose the disease and controlling the movement of the population can be confirmed as effective measures to prevent and control the regional outbreak of the epidemic.
