The Dothideomycetes are a class of cosmopolitan fungi that are present principally in terrestrial environments, but which have also been found in freshwater and marine habitats. In the present study, more than a hundred samples of plant debris were collected from various freshwater locations in Spain. Its incubation in wet chambers allowed us to detect and to isolate in pure culture numerous fungi producing asexual reproductive fruiting bodies (conidiomata). Thanks to a morphological comparison and to a phylogenetic analysis that combined the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nrDNA with fragments of the RNA polymerase II subunit 2 (rpb2), beta tubulin (tub2), and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef-1) genes, six of those strains were identified as new species to science. Three belong to the family Didymellaceae: Didymella brevipilosa, Heterophoma polypusiformis and Paraboeremia clausa; and three belong to the family Phaeosphaeriaceae:Paraphoma aquatica, Phaeosphaeria fructigena and Xenophoma microspora. The finding of these new taxa significantly increases the number of the coelomycetous fungi that have been described from freshwater habitats.

AbstractSpecies of Arthrinium are well-known plant pathogens, endophytes, or saprobes found in various terrestrial habitats. Although several species have been isolated from marine environments and their remarkable biological activities have been reported, marine Arthrinium species remain poorly understood. In this study, the diversity of this group was evaluated based on material from Korea, using morphological characterization and molecular analyses with the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, β-tubulin (TUB), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF). A total of 41 Arthrinium strains were isolated from eight coastal sites which represented 14 species. Eight of these are described as new to science with detailed descriptions.

A collection of fungi was isolated from macroalgae of the genera Gracilaria, Enteromorpha and Ulva in the estuary Ria de Aveiro in Portugal. These isolates were characterized through a multilocus phylogeny based on ITS region of the ribosomal DNA, beta-tubulin (tub2) and translation elongation factor 1 alpha (tef1-α) sequences, in conjunction with morphological and physiological data. These analyses showed that the isolates represented an unknown fungus for which a new genus, Neptunomycesgen. nov. and a new species, Neptunomyces aureussp. nov. are proposed. Phylogenetic analyses supported the affiliation of this new taxon to the family Didymosphaeriaceae.

Thirty-four Lycoperdon specimens from Korea were examined with the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA sequence data. The result of the ITS sequences phylogenetic analysis indicated that the Korean specimens represented nine different species. To confirm the taxonomic position of these species, we conducted an intensive morphological investigation, and additional phylogenetic investigation of the protein coding regions RNA polymerase subunit II (RPB2) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1). We discovered two new species (L. albiperidium and L. subperlatum) and one (L. ericaeum) newly discovered in Korea. Lycoperdon albiperidium is closely related to L. ericaeum based on ITS, RPB2 and TEF1 sequence data, but these species were distinguishable by morphological characteristics, especially the shape of the basidiocarps, the diameter of the eucapillitial threads and the size of the basidospores. Lycoperdon subperlatum is quite similar to the European and American L. perlatum based on morphological characteristics. However, L. subperlatum is clearly distinct from European and American L. perlatum based on ITS, RPB2 and TEF1 sequence data, and somewhat differs from them in macro- and microscopic characteristics. Based on morphological characteristics, L. ericaeum is related to L. subumbrinum and L. lividum but it is distinguishable by the presence of fragile, eucapillitial threads, the diameters of the threads and ITS sequences. Here, we describe four Lycoperdon species collected in Korea.

During a survey of saprobic microfungi in Thailand, a dothideomycetous fungus was found on a dead twig of Delonix regia, on the Chiang Mai University campus. This fungus is characterized by fully immersed ascomata under a small blackened pseudoclypeus, pseudoparenchymatous peridium, cellular pseudoparaphyses, cylindrical-clavate asci with a distinct pedicel, overlapping 3–4-seriate, pale to dark brown, broadly fusoid, 7–9-transversally septate ascospores with a vertical septum in nearly all median cells. Multigene phylogenetic analyses, using partial sequences from the 28S nrRNA gene (LSU), 18S nrRNA gene (SSU), internal transcribed spacer regions and intervening 5.8S nrRNA gene (ITS) of the nrDNA operon and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha region (TEF) demonstrated a monophyletic affiliation of the new strain, accommodating the species of Phaeoseptum in the family Phaeoseptaceae. With further morphological and phylogenetic investigations, we justify the new fungus as a novel species, Phaeoseptum hydei in Phaeoseptaceae. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided for Phaeoseptum hydei and this novel species compared with the remaining species found in the genus. An updated checklist of microfungi recorded on Delonix regia from around the world is also provided.

The taxonomy of Oculimacula, Rhynchosporium and Spermospora is re-evaluated, along with that of phylogenetically related genera. Isolates are identified using comparisons of DNA sequences of the internal transcribed spacer ribosomal RNA locus (ITS), partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1), actin (act), DNA-directed RNA polymerase II largest (rpb1) and second largest subunit (rpb2) genes, and the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (LSU), combined with their morphological characteristics. Oculimacula is restricted to two species, O. acuformis and O. yallundae, with O. aestiva placed in Cyphellophora, and O. anguioides accommodated in a new genus, Helgardiomyces. Rhynchosporium s. str. is restricted to species with 1-septate conidia and hooked apical beaks, while Rhynchobrunnera is introduced for species with 1–3-septate, straight conidia, lacking any apical beak. Rhynchosporium graminicola is proposed to replace the name R. commune applied to the barley scald pathogen based on nomenclatural priority. Spermospora is shown to be paraphyletic, representing Spermospora (type: S. subulata), with three new species, S. arrhenatheri, S. loliiphila and S. zeae, and Neospermospora gen. nov. (type: N. avenae). Ypsilina (type: Y. graminea), is shown to be monophyletic, but appears to be of minor importance on cereals. Finally, Vanderaaea gen. nov. (type: V. ammophilae), is introduced as a new coelomycetous fungus occurring on dead leaves of Ammophila arenaria.

During June 2018, several symptomatic fig (Ficus carica) cuttings, showing twig blight, subcortical discolouration and apical dieback were collected from a nursery in Catania province, Sicily (Italy). Isolations from diseased tissue consistently showed the presence of the same fungal colony. Morphology of the fungal isolates together with sequence data of the nuclear rDNA internal transcriber spacer (ITS) region, translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1) gene and partial beta-tubulin (tub2) gene of representatives isolates revealed the presence of the fungus Neofusicoccum parvum. Pathogenicity tests were conducted by inoculating fig cuttings with mycelial plugs. After 10 days, the inoculated plants developed cankers similar to those observed in the greenhouse and after 26 days all inoculated plants were dead. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report worldwide of N. parvum causing disease on this host.

Three species of Lepiota sensu lato from China are described and illustrated based on morphological characters and molecular evidence. Echinoderma flavidoasperum and Lepiota omninoflava are new to science, while Lepiota echinacea is newly reported from China. Echinoderma flavidoasperum is characterized by a yellow pileus, nearly smooth stipe that discolors light red when bruised, and subcylindrical basidiospores. Lepiota omninoflava, so far only found in the tropics, is characterized by the yellow basidiomata, ellipsoid basidiospores and the absence of cheilocystidia. All three of the Chinese species are discussed and placed within a phylogeny based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the large subunit (LSU) of the ribosomal DNA, the translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-α) and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rpb2).

A new species, Cantharellus albus, was collected from southwestern China and described with both morphological and molecular characters. It differs from other species of Cantharellus by its smooth white pileus, white hymenophore, and white stipe, the latter turning yellow after bruising. The phylogenetic tree inferred from the combined dataset of three DNA fragments, namely large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LSU), RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (tef1), indicated that the new species is distinct from other species of Cantharellus and is a member of sect. Flavobrunnei within the subgenus Parvocantharellus.

A new species, Melanoleuca juliannae is described from Hungary. Its most outstanding character is the presence of a violaceous-blue colour in the stipe base. Sequence comparisons with other Melanoleuca species revealed highly similar but decolourate members of the species, lacking the remarkable colour of the stipe. These specimens are described as Melanoleuca juliannae var. decolorans based on three collections from the Czech Republic and Italy. Detailed macro- and microscopic descriptions of the new species are given. The position of M. juliannae within subgen. Urticocystis was confirmed by DNA sequence data of the ITS region of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene cluster and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1). Although intra-individual heterogeneity in ITS region was revealed in some specimens of the type variety, the tef1 sequences lack a similar heterogeneity.

Abstract Trichoderma isolates were collected from wetland soils in different areas of China. Combined analyses of morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses by partial translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF1-α) and RNA polymerase II subunit b (RPB2) revealed five new Trichoderma species, namely, Trichoderma macrofasciculatum, T. shangrilaense, T. nordicum, T. vadicola, and T. hailarense. T. macrofasciculatum and T. shangrilaense belonging to the Polysporum Clade were isolated from wetland soils collected from Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces. The conidiation of T. macrofasciculatum typically appeared in white pustules in concentric rings on PDA or MEA, and its conidia had two or more guttules. Conidiation of T. shangrilaense formed white pustules with irregular shape and size, and its conidia were mostly obovoid and smooth. Trichoderma vadicola, T. nordicum, and T. hailarense belonging to the Viride Clade were collected from Shandong Province, Beijing Municipality, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, respectively. The phialides of T. nordicum lageniform were curved on PDA, and its conidia were globose to obovoidal and large. The aerial mycelium of T. vadicola formed strands and floccose mat. The colonies of T. hailarense cannot form conidia on PDA, and the conidia of T. hailarense on other media were obovoid and delicately roughened.
