Evaluating the relative weight of the choice of cultivar and soil fertilization on potentially toxic elements (PTEs) accumulation is crucial in promoting informed decisions in the framework of regenerative agriculture. To this end, 11 PTEs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Zn) were determined in both leaves and roots of six cultivars (Stylist, Xanadu, Aljeva, Bacio, Analena, Vincenzo) of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown side by side on mineral fertilized or biowaste compost amended soils, under greenhouse conditions. The use of multivariate and linear modelling approaches indicated that the organ and cultivar primarily account for the variability in PTE concentrations. In terms of PTE partitioning between organs, Cd and Mg were preferentially accumulated in leaves, whereas Cu, Pb, K and Zn in roots. As for the cultivar, Xanadu showed the highest concentrations of several PTEs, with Cd reaching concerning levels. Fertilization had a detectable contribution only on Cd accumulation, slightly increased in leaves by compost. Findings highlight the key role of cultivar choice in guaranteeing food safety and grant the possibility to adopt biowaste compost in regenerative agriculture without concerns about PTE accumulation enhancements in lettuce, but demand a cautionary approach in the case of Cd.

AbstractAt the time of protrusion, radicles of lettuce seeds became susceptible to desiccation damage. Concomitant with radicle elongation, both the reducing sugar content and the amount of lipid-aldehydes increased. The role of the hydroxy- and lipid-aldehydes in browning reactions that occurred during desiccation and re-imbibition was analysed. It was concluded that both types of aldehydes reacted with amino-groups during desiccation and that the increase in lipid-aldehydes during germination could be due to the augmented reducing sugar content. Therefore, the high reducing sugar content in radicles of germinated lettuce seeds may be the primary source of hydroxyl radicals, and thereby, a principal cause of desiccation damage.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the most popular leafy vegetables, appreciated globally as a low-calorie food with bioactive compounds. The application of a low dose of abiotic stress is considered a sustainable pre-harvest strategy to modify the nutraceutical value of horticultural products. In this work, we explored the response of two differently colored (red or green) baby leaf lettuce varieties to four NaCl concentrations in the nutrient solution (from 1 to 30 mM), using a full factorial design. We focused on leaf morphological parameters and possible phytochemical enhancement of the main polyphenols and anthocyanins, analyzed by LC-MS. The response to low-to-moderate salt stress exposure was affected mainly by salt concentration for leaf traits or by the cultivar for leaf color, with very limited factors’ interactions. Multivariate analysis indicated a predominant role of the genotypic factor in shaping differences in the two weeks growing cycle for baby leaf lettuce. Phytochemically, different dose–response models to sub-optimal saline conditions may be applied to the various compounds. A significant hormetic stimulation was present only for cyanidin-malonyl glucoside, the main anthocyanin present in the red cultivar.
