The aim of the study was to evaluate the stability, reactivity, and bond strength with a lithium disilicate ceramic of a self-etch silane primer (Monobond Etch and Prime/MEP). The stability was evaluated by 1H-,31P-NMR spectroscopy (before/after aging), and the reactivity by micro MIR-FTIR spectroscopy on Ge surfaces (0, 1, 24 h) using a prehydrolyzed silane primer (Calibra Silane Coupling Agent/CLB), as a control. The effect of MEP vs. 5% HF-etching on ceramic roughness was assessed by optical profilometry. The shear bond strength (SBS) of a resin composite bonded to polished ceramic surfaces treated with MEP, HF without silane (HF+NS), HF+CLB, and HF+MEP (n = 20) was evaluated after storage in water (A: 37 °C/1 week, B: 5000×/5–55 °C and C: 100 °C/24 h). Aging did not affect the silanol groups of MEP, but only the phosphate co-monomer. Silanols were reactive forming siloxanes, but exhibited lower consumption rate than CLB. HF-etching induced significantly higher values than MEP, in all the roughness parameters tested (Sa, Sz, Sdr, Sc, Sv), with the greatest differences found in Sdr and Sv. For SBS, MEP was inferior to all treatments/storage conditions, except of HF+NS in A, where the values were similar. However, on a HF-etched substrate, MEP provided highest strength and reliability.

Background:Dentin bonding is an ever-evolving field in adhesive dentistry. With the introduction of newer systems into the market, there is a crucial need to test their efficiency in terms of bond strength. Dual-cured adhesives in theory may provide for a better degree of conversion as compared to conventional light-cured adhesives .Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of three different self-etch adhesives namely ClearfilSE bond (Kuraray), Tetric N Bond Universal (IvoclarVivadent) and Futura Bond DC (Voco) to dentin. Materials & Methods: Ninety extracted non-carious, intact human mandibular molar teeth were selected for this study. Each tooth was decoronated using a double-sided diamond disc with water coolant to a depth of 2mm from the cusp tip .The cut dentin surface was then abraded against 600-grit wet silicon carbide papers for 60 seconds to produce a uniform smear layer. The root portion of each tooth was mounted on a plastic ring using cold cure acrylic resin. Specimens were then divided into three adhesive groups of 30 teeth each, Group A: ClearfilSE Bond (Kuraray), Group B: Tetric N Bond Universal (IvoclarVivadent), Group C :Futura Bond DC (Voco). All bonding agents were used according to the manufacturers’ instructions, in combination with the resin composite Tetric N Ceram (IvoclarVivadent). The samples were thermocycled, followed by shear bond strength testing using a Universal testing machine (Hounsfield). Data were subjected to statistical analysis using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (P<0.05) and Post hoc Tukey’s test for inter- and intra- group analysis respectively. Results: Clearfil SE Bond yielded the highest shear bond strength values (30.9 ±4.66 MPa) which were statistically significant, followed byTetric N Bond Universal group (29.8 ±4.34) and the lowest shear bond strength values were recorded for Futura Bond DC (18.2 ±3.13). Conclusion: Clearfil SE bond and Tetric N bond Universal can be considered as better options than Futura Bond DC.

Background and Purpose. Contamination of the lithium disilicate (LDS) during the try-in procedure is unavoidable and may weaken the bond strength of restoration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of different surface cleansing agents on the shear bond strength (SBS) of contaminated LDS. Materials and Methods. Seventy LDS specimens were randomly divided into seven groups. The first group was noncontaminated surface (PC). The six other groups were contaminated with the saliva and silicone disclosing medium and treated with no surface cleansing agent (NC); phosphoric acid (PO); Ivoclean (IV); sodium hydroxide solution (NA); Restorative Cleansing Agent (RC); and hydrofluoric acid (HF). Then, LDS specimens were cementated with Panavia V5 to resin composite rod. Each specimen was subjected to an SBS test. The modes of failure was inspected under light microscope. The surface element of each group was examined by SEM-EDS. Results. The results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tamhane’s T2. The mean SBS value of NC was significantly lower than others ( p < 0.05 ), and HF was significantly higher than others ( p < 0.05 ). However, PC, PO, IV, NA, and RC were not significantly different from each other ( p > 0.05 ). The mode of failure was mostly adhesive failure in every group. The surface showed similar amount of elements in every group. Conclusions. The SBS of LDS was reduced by saliva and silicone disclosing medium contamination which can be restored using acid- and alkaline-based surface cleansing agents before the cementation procedure.

Composite resin is a widely used aesthetic restoration. The restoration can fail due to secondary caries. Chlorhexidinegluconate 2% is used as a cavity disinfectant to eliminate microorganisms on the prepared cavity and to prevent thesecondary caries. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of chlorhexidine gluconate 2% to the bondstrength of composite resin with self etch system adhesive on dentine. Sixteen specimens of buccal dentine of premolarscrown are divided into 2 different groups. Group I: Clearfil SE Bond self-etch primer was applied for 20 seconds,Clearfil SE Bond bonding was applied for 5 seconds and polymerized for 10 seconds. Composite resin was constructedincrementally and polymerized for 20 seconds. Group II: prior to self etch primer application as in group I,chlorhexidine gluconate 2% was applied for 15 seconds. Shear bond strength was tested using Testing machine andanalyzed with unpaired T test. The highest shear bond strength was obtained by applying chlorhexidine gluconate 2%.The study concludes that chlorhexidine gluconate 2% application to dentine did not affect significantly to the bondstrength composite resin using self etch adhesive systems.

Abstract Background:In restorative dentistry we usually use Sandwich Technique for posterior restorations where GIC is placed below and a resin composite is placed over it. The bonding strength between these two materials are low. We are looking for the best adhesive system to put it in between. We think that the self-etching bond will give the best bonding strength between them whereas total etch will give lower bonding strength than self-etching system. Methods:ION-Z GIC was bonded to resin composite by using two different bonding agents. The thirty specimens used were prepared by using acrylic blocks with holes in each hole to retain the ION-Z GIC. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups:Group I: Control group.Group II: Total-etch adhesive was applied and cured over ION-Z GIC.Group III: Self-etch adhesive was applied and cured.The composite resin placed over the ION-Z GIC and cured. The shear bond strength was measured by shearing of the bonded specimens on Universal Testing Machine (Model 114) using speed of 0.1mm / minute. The reading was tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis using ANOVA and Tukey's test.Results:The test showed statistically significant difference between Group III and Group I and between Group III and Group II. Group III had the highest shear bonding strength.Conclusion:Self-etch adhesive agent produces have better shear bond strength to ION-Z than total-etch adhesive and to the group without any bonding agent.

Abstract Objective The study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (LDGC) and resin cement (RC) using different surface treatments. Materials and Methods LDGC blocks (Vintage LD Press) were prepared, etched with 4.5% hydrofluoric acid, and randomly divided into seven groups (n = 10), depending on the surface treatments. The groups were divided as follows: 1) no surface treatment (control), 2) Silane Primer (KS), 3) Signum Ceramic Bond I (SGI), 4) Signum Ceramic Bond I/Signum Ceramic Bond II (SGI/SGII), 5) experimental silane (EXP), 6) experimental silane/Signum Ceramic Bond II (EXP/SGII), and 7) Experimental/Adper Scotchbond Multi-purpose Adhesive (EXP/ADP). The specimens were cemented to resin composite blocks with resin cement and stored in water at 37 °C for 24 hours. The specimens underwent 5,000 thermal cycles and were subjected to the SBS test. Mode of failure was evaluated under the stereo microscope. Statistical Analysis Data were analyzed with Welch ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc tests (α = 0.05). Results The highest mean SBS showed in group EXP/ADP (45.49 ± 3.37 MPa); however, this was not significantly different from group EXP/SGII (41.38 ± 2.17 MPa) (p ≥ 0.05). The lowest SBS was shown in the control group (18.36 ± 0.69 MPa). This was not significantly different from group KS (20.17 ± 1.10 MPa) (p ≥ 0.05). Conclusions The different surface treatments significantly affected the SBS value between LDGC and RC. The application of pure silane coupling agent with or without the application of an adhesive improved the SBS value and bond quality.

SUMMARY This study investigated the effect of peroxide bleaching gel on the durability of the adhesive bond between composite material, enamel, and dentin created with the etch-and-rinse adhesive Gluma Comfort Bond (GLU) and with the self-etch adhesives Clearfil SE Bond (CLE), Adper Prompt (ADP), and iBond (IBO). The adhesives were applied to flattened enamel and dentin of extracted human molars and built up with a microhybrid composite (Charisma). After 25 eight-hour cycles of bleaching with a 20% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel (Opalescence PF 20), the shear bond strength was measured and compared with one-day and two-month control specimens stored in water. The data were analyzed using nonparametric Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis statistics (p&lt;0.05). Detailed fractographic analysis was performed using scanning electron microscopy. The bleaching gel significantly decreased the bond strength on both enamel and dentin for the simplified single-step self-etch adhesives ADP and IBO and markedly affected a fracture pattern of ADP specimens at the periphery of their bonded area. The results of our study indicate that the durability of adhesive restorations can be detrimentally influenced by carbamide peroxide bleaching and that different adhesives show varying sensitivity levels to the bleaching gel.

Abstract Objective To investigate experimental eggshell powder (ESP) solution application effect on shear bond strength (SBS) test timing of bulk-fill resin composite to bleached enamel. Methods Eighty bovine-extracted anterior teeth were alienated to eight groups (n = 10), representing shear bond strength test timing periods (immediate or delayed) and the remineralizing agents investigated (MI paste Plus and ESP solution). Enamel surfaces were bleached using in-office chemical bleaching agent and the two remineralizing agents were applied then self-etch adhesive and bulk-fill resin composite were performed at 24 h and 14 d before SBS test was done. One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey post hoc test was performed for statistical analysis. Results The control groups showed the highest mean values, while the bleached enamel groups recorded the least mean values. ESP bleached enamel group recorded a significantly higher mean SBS values than MI paste Plus bleached group. Delayed SBS groups showed higher mean values than immediate SBS groups except for control group. Conclusions ESP had a positive and significant effect on SBS of bulk-fill resin composite to bleached enamel surface. Delaying the bonding procedure and restoration of the bleached teeth using resin composite restorations results in a better bond durability.

Abstract Objective Bonding to different dentin substrates influences resin composite restoration outcomes. This study investigated the influence of different adhesion protocols on the shear bond strength of universal adhesive systems to sound and artificial caries-affected dentin (CAD). Materials and Methods Occlusal enamel of 80 premolars were wet grinded to obtain flat midcoronal dentin. Specimens were equally divided according to the substrate condition: sound and CAD by subjecting to pH-cycling for 14 days. Each dentin substrate was bonded with the adhesive systems used in this study: Single Bond universal adhesive or Prime&Bond universal (applied either in etch-and-rinse or self-etch adhesion protocol). Adhesive systems were utilized according to manufacturers’ instructions, then resin composite was built up. Specimens were tested for shear bond strength. The data were analyzed by three-way analysis of variance, and failure modes were determined using stereomicroscope. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the two tested adhesive systems on artificially created CAD with different adhesion protocols. On sound dentin, Single Bond universal, either in the etch-and-rinse or self-etch adhesion protocols, revealed higher statistically significant shear bond strength mean values compared with CAD. Conclusion Single Bond universal adhesive in an etch-and-rinse adhesion protocol improved only bonding to sound dentin, while no added positive effect for the etching step with Prime&Bond universal adhesive was found when bonded to both sound and CAD substrates. The influence of CAD on the performance of the universal adhesives was material-dependent.
