The mechanical behavior of 3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 ceramic and 21 wt.% Al2O3-3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 ceramic composite with submicron grain size was studied. Mechanical properties, such as hardness, Young’s modulus, four-point bending strength, and fracture toughness of both materials were measured. Linear stress-strain deformation behavior of both 3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 and 21 wt.% Al2O3-3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 was observed in flexure, both at room temperature and at 400 °C. A small deviation from linear elastic deformation was detected in 21 wt.% Al2O3-3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 ceramic composite when loaded above a stress of 1500 MPa. Therefore, it was concluded that only elastic deformation occurred at low stresses upon loading, which exclude the presence of domain switching in zirconia upon bending under the loading conditions of this study.

The analysis of the post-cracking behavior of a large plate cast of fiber concrete shows a large variability due to the fiber alignment and dispersion. Therefore, one can expect, that the bending strength and other material parameters depend on the position in the plate. This means that the position the samples for testing are taken from may play a significant role in assessing the mechanical properties and strength of composite materials. Often, the investigation of fiber concrete properties have been performed by testing small size beams. The results can be influenced by the boundary restrictions, such as wall-effect, which influences the fiber distribution. In this study the four-point bending strength of beams cut out of a large plate was investigated, the results represent the local strength of the plate in this particular place. The fiber orientation and distribution have been evaluated by X-ray Computed Tomography and Image Analysis Method. The results of the experiments have shown that the position of the beam inside of a large-size plate has a strong influence on the mechanical properties and post-cracking behavior. The analysis of the obtained outcomes proposes the following conclusions: the beams that were located near the edges of the formwork have shown a strong, strain-hardening behavior, and the beams that were located on the way of the casting bucket (a zone of the high turbulence/perturbation/disturbance) have shown a weak, strain-softening behavior.

Low temperature degradation free Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) has been developed. It is reported that ZTA has higher mechanical strength compared to alumina due to the stress induced transformation and spontaneously transformation of zirconia phase on some ZTA have been occurred. For achieving the higher reliability of artificial joint prosthesis alternative to alumina and other ceramic materials, it is necessary to improve and validate the both mechanical characteristics and phase stability at the same time. We evaluated that microstructure, mechanical characteristics and phase stability of newly developed ZTA (BIOCERAM®AZUL). It was confirmed that four-point bending strength and weibull modulus were extreamly high, and ZTA has higher reliability. There were no significant changes and deterioration in four-point bending strength, crystal structure and wear property with and without accelerated aging test. Newly developed ZTA not only with high mechanical characteristics but also with phase stability could be quite useful as bearing materials in artificial joints for longer clinical use.

Drilling holes is one of the most common operations in the manufacture of parts. As a result, improving the efficiency of this process is an urgent task. To improve the efficiency of the drilling process, a method was developed at the Southwestern University for drilling with pre–stressed–deformed material of the workpiece, in which the sample is subjected to elastic deformation at a load that does not exceed the proportionality limit of the workpiece material, that is, when the load is removed, the dimensions of the workpiece remain the same. As part of this work, an experimental device was developed and designed to determine the limits of elasticity and proportionality of materials for subsequent drilling of workpieces in a stress–strain state. This invention will improve the automation and accuracy of measurement. An example of measurement and calculation is considered. Calculation formulas for determining the measurement error are given.

The paper reports results of magnetic measurements made on samples of the 12GB pipe steel (strength group X42SS) designed for producing pipes to be used in media with high hydrogen sulphide content, both in the initial state and after exposure to hydrogen sulphide, for 96, 192 and 384 hours under uniaxial elastic-plastic tension. At the stage of elastic deformation there is a unique correlation between the coercive force measured on a minor hysteresis loop in weak fields and tensile stress, which enables this parameter to be used for the evaluation of elastic stresses in pipes made of the 12 GB pipe steel under different conditions, including a hydrogen sulphide containing medium. The effect of the value of preliminary plastic strain, viewed as the initial stress-strain state, on the magnetic behaviour of X70 pipe steels under elastic tension and compression is studied. Plastic strain history affects the magnetic behaviour of the material during subsequent elastic deformation since plastic strain induces various residual stresses, and this necessitates taking into account the initial stress-strain state of products when developing magnetic techniques for the determination of their stress-strain parameters during operation.

Through the four-point bending test of lath-shaped heat treated AZ31 magnesium alloy, the bending properties and damage characteristics were explored. The results show that the optimal bending strength of the magnesium alloy were 355.1MPa and 259.2MPa for extruded and cast samples, respectively, after corresponding heat treatment with 350°C, 90min and 400°C, 30min. The initial cracks both occurred at the loading point after applied load exceeded the yield limit of AZ31 magnesium alloy. Surface bump, cracks and other damage morphology accompanied by a large number of twinning organizations were found on the surface of the samples.

Modern technical textiles, including knitted fabrics, are widely used in the construction industry. Regarding textiles in concrete reinforcement, methods based on shredded fibres, meshes, reinforcing mats, woven textiles and knitted DOStapes are frequently used as underlays of concrete constructions. Textiles are also used in the reinforcement of fibrous FRP composites. The research presented focused on producing composites made of MapeiMapefill concrete mass with reinforcement in the form of three variants of knitted meshes made of 228 tex polyamide threads, polypropylene threads of 6.3 tex and 203 tex glass threads, as well as identification of their mechanical properties. The mesh variant made of glass fibre is especially noteworthy, as its strength is more than three times higher than that of polyamide meshes. At the same time, a very small relative elongation of 3% is observed for this variant of knitted fabric, which is a desired property regarding the comparatively low stretching extension of concrete. In the process of making the composites, the adhesion of the concrete mass to the surface of the threads was analyzed. For this purpose, a "Sopro HE449" type agent was used. Composite beams were subjected to a three-point bending strength analysis on a testing machine. The results of strength measurements of the composites obtained prove that those with glass fibres demonstrate a threefold increase in strength compared to the original concrete beam.

Fully plastic plane stress solutions are given for a center-cracked strip in tension and an edge-cracked strip in pure bending. In the fully plastic formulation the material is characterized by a pure power hardening stress-strain relation which reduces at one limit to linear elasticity and at the other to rigid/perfect plasticity. Simple formulas are given for estimating the J-integral, the load-point displacement and the crack opening displacement in terms of the applied load for strain hardening materials characterized by the Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain relation in tension. The formulas make use of the linear elastic solution and the fully plastic solution to interpolate over the entire range of small and large scale yielding. The accuracy of the formulas is assessed using finite element calculations for some specific configurations.
