Standards for the fatigue testing of wearable sensing technologies are lacking. The majority of published fatigue tests for wearable sensors are performed on proof-of-concept stretch sensors fabricated from a variety of materials. Due to their flexibility and stretchability, polymers are often used in the fabrication of wearable sensors. Other materials, including textiles, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and conductive metals or inks, may be used in conjunction with polymers to fabricate wearable sensors. Depending on the combination of the materials used, the fatigue behaviors of wearable sensors can vary. Additionally, fatigue testing methodologies for the sensors also vary, with most tests focusing only on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) regime, and few sensors are cycled until failure or runout are achieved. Fatigue life predictions of wearable sensors are also lacking. These issues make direct comparisons of wearable sensors difficult. To facilitate direct comparisons of wearable sensors and to move proof-of-concept sensors from “bench to bedside,” fatigue testing standards should be established. Further, both high-cycle fatigue (HCF) and failure data are needed to determine the appropriateness in the use, modification, development, and validation of fatigue life prediction models and to further the understanding of how cracks initiate and propagate in wearable sensing technologies.

The paper addresses results of fatigue testing of light metal alloys used in the automotive as well as aerospace and aviation industries, among others. The material subject to testing comprised hot-worked rods made of the AZ31 alloy, the Ti-6Al-4V two-phase titanium alloy and the 2017A (T451) aluminium alloy. Both low- and high-cycle fatigue tests were conducted at room temperature on the cycle asymmetry ratio of R=-1. The low-cycle fatigue tests were performed using the MTS-810 machine on two levels of total strain, i.e.Δεc= 1.0% and 1.2%. The high-cycle fatigue tests, on the other hand, were performed using a machine from VEB Werkstoffprufmaschinen-Leipzig under conditions of rotary bending. Based on the results thus obtained, one could develop fatigue life characteristics of the materials examined (expressed as the number of cycles until failure of sample Nf) as well as characteristics of cyclic material strain σa=f(N) under the conditions of low-cycle fatigue testing. The Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy was found to be characterised by the highest value of fatigue life Nf, both in lowand high-cycle tests. The lowest fatigue life, on the other hand, was established for the aluminium alloys examined. Under the high-cycle fatigue tests, the life of the 2017A aluminium and the AZ31 magnesium alloy studied was determined by the value of stress amplitude σa. With the stress exceeding 150 MPa, it was the aluminium alloy which displayed higher fatigue life, whereas the magnesium alloy proved better on lower stress.

Co -base superalloys have been applied in the stationary components of gas turbine owing to their excellent high temperature properties. Low cycle fatigue data on ECY-768 reported in a companion paper were used to evaluate fatigue life prediction models. In this study, low cycle fatigue tests are performed as the variables of total strain range and temperatures. The relations between plastic and total strain energy densities and number of cycles to failure are examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of Cobalt-based super alloy at different temperatures. The fatigue lives is evaluated using predicted by Coffin-Manson method and strain energy methods is compared with the measured fatigue lives at different temperatures. The microstructure observing was performed for how affect able to low-cycle fatigue life by increasing the temperature.

The article presents the results of research on low cycle fatigue strength of laser welded joints vs. non-welded material of high-strength steel DOMEX 700 MC. The tests were performed under load controlled using the total strain amplitude ɛac. The operating principle of the special electro-mechanic fatigue testing equipment with a suitable clamping system was working on 35 Hz frequency. Fatigue life analysis was conducted based on the Manson-Coffin-Basquin equation, which made it possible to determine fatigue parameters. Studies have shown differences in the fatigue life of original specimens and laser welded joints analysed, where laser welded joints showed lower fatigue resistance. In this article a numerical analysis of stresses generated in bending fatigue specimens has been performed employing the commercially available FEM-program ADINA.

This paper presents the results of tests conducted on the HR6W (23Cr-45Ni-6W-Nb-Ti-B) alloy under low-cycle fatigue at room temperature and at 650 °C. Fatigue tests were carried out at constant values of the total strain ranges. The alloy under low-cycle fatigue showed cyclic strengthening both at room temperature and at 650 °C. The degree of HR6W strengthening described by coefficient n’ was higher at higher temperatures. At the same time, its fatigue life Nf at room temperature was, depending on the range of total strain adopted in the tests, several times higher than observed at 650 °C.

Low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties of a powder metallurgy(PM) nickel base superalloy FGH720Li were systematically studied in this work, including smooth LCF and notched LCF tested at various temperatures and different stress. The relationship between the fatigue life and applied stress was analyzed both for smooth fatigue and notch fatigue tests. The effects of loading frequency and stress ratio on LCF behavior were also studied. As an important influencing factor of the fatigue life in powder metallurgy superalloy, the effect of inclusions on LCF life was also investigated. The results showed that the fatigue properties of FGH720Li alloy was excellent, when tested at the temperature of 450°C and applied stress of 1230MPa, the fatigue life could exceed 5×104 cycles. When tested at 650°C and 1150MPa, the average fatigue life was still beyond 2×105 cycles.

In this study, the influence of microstructure on the cyclic behaviour and lifetime of Cu and Au wires with diameters of 25μm in the low and high cycle fatigue regimes was investigated. Low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were conducted with a load ratio of 0.1 and a strain rate of ~2e-4. An ultrasonic resonance fatigue testing system working at 20 kHz was used to obtain lifetime curves under symmetrical loading conditions up to very high cycle regime (VHCF). In order to obtain a total fatigue life model covering the low to high cycle regime of the thin wires by considering the effects of mean stress, a four parameter lifetime model is proposed. The effect of testing frequency on high cycle fatigue data of Cu is discussed based on analysis of strain rate dependency of the tensile properties with the help of the material model proposed by Johnson and Cook.

NUREG/CR-6909 of USA and JSME of Japan proposed new rules for evaluating environmental effects in fatigue analyses of reactors components. These rules were established from a lot of fatigue data with polished specimens under simple loading condition. The effects of surface finish or complex loading condition were reported in some papers, but these data were obtained with the simple shaped specimens. In order to evaluate the effects of surface finish and loading condition and to confirm the applicability of the proposed rules to actual components, Low Cycle Fatigue tests are performed in PWR environment with the specimens cut from 316 austenitic stainless steel welded piping. The pipes are machined to have three levels of surface finish condition and the load pattern simulating the thermal stress is applied to specimens. In this study, the effect of surface finish on fatigue life is included to be small for 316 austenitic stainless steel welded piping. Considering the insensitive region in the current evaluation rule, predicted accuracy is increased and possibility of improving the current rule is indicated.

This paper investigates the fatigue results in low cycle fatigue region obtained from a miniaturized specimen having a 6mm gage length, 3mm diameter and 55mm total length. Fatigue tests were performed for two type lead-free solders using horizontal-type electrical servo hydraulic push-pull fatigue testing machine. Materials employed were Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-5Sb. The results from Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu were compared with those obtained using a bulk specimen in a previous study. Relationship between strain range and number of cycles to failure of the small-sized specimen agreed with those of the bulk specimens. The testing techniques are applicable to Sn-5Sb following the Manson-Coffin law. These results confirm that the testing technique proposed here, using small-sized specimen, is suitable to get fruitful fatigue data for lead-free solder compounds.

This paper presents the results of low-cycle fatigue testing and analysis of 26 piping components and butt-welded sections. The test specimens were fabricated from Type-304 stainless steel and carbon steel, materials which are typically used in the primary piping of light water nuclear reactors. Components included 6-in. elbows, tees, and girth butt-welded straight sections. Fatigue testing consisted of subjecting the specimens to deflection-controlled cyclic bending with the objective of simulating system thermal expansion type loading. Tests were conducted at room temperature and 550 deg F, with specimens at room temperature subjected to 1050 psi constant internal hydraulic pressure in addition to cyclic bending. In two tests at room temperature, however, stainless steel elbows were subjected to combined simultaneous cyclic internal pressure and cyclic bending. Predictions of the fatigue life of each of the specimens tested have been made according to the procedures specified in NB-3650 of Section III[1] in order to assess the code design margin. For the purpose of the assessment, predicted fatigue life is compared to actual fatigue life which is defined as the number of fatigue cycles producing complete through-wall crack growth (leakage). Results of this assessment show that the present code fatigue rules are adequately conservative.
