This paper discusses the effects of the environment and temperature of the Ti3C2 (MXene) oxidation process. The MXene powders were annealed at temperatures of 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, and 1800 °C in argon and vacuum using a Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) furnace. The purpose of the applied annealing method was to determine the influence of a high heating rate on the MXene degradation scheme. Additionally, to determine the thermal stability of MXene during the sintering of SiC matrix composites, SiC–C–B–Ti3C2 powder mixtures were also annealed. The process parameters were as follows: Temperatures of 1400 and 1600 °C, and pressure of 30 MPa in a vacuum. Observations of the microstructure showed that, due to annealing of the SiC–C–B–Ti3C2 powder mixtures, porous particles are formed consisting of TiC, Ti3C2sym, and amorphous carbon. The formation of porous particles is a transitional stage in the formation of disordered carbon structures.

Mechanical Activation assisted Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis in air (MA-SHS in air process) was successfully applied to the synthesis of the powder mixtures of ZrB2 and ZrC containing Ta and Hf as a precursor of Ultra High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) matrix composites. When the powder mixtures of (Ta or Hf+Zr)/B/C=2/2/1 (Ta or Hf/Zr=0/2, 0.1/1.9, 0.2/1.8, 0.4/1.6) in molar ratio were mechanically activated (MA) by ball milling for 45-60 min and then exposed to air, they self-ignited spontaneously and the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) was occurred to form ZrB2 and ZrC. From these MA-SHS powders, the Ta, Hf-containing ZrB2-ZrC composite compacts having a fine and homogeneous microstructure composed of < 5 μm-sized grains were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1800°C. The mechanical properties of the composites evaluated by Vickers indentation method was improved by the addition of Ta and showed the values of Vickers hardness (HV) of 16.9 GPa and fracture toughness of 4.3 MPa·m1/2.

Metal matrix composites were prepared by hot pressing (HP) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) techniques. Ball-milled ironbase powders were consolidated to near full density by these methods at 900°C. The physical and mechanical properties of the resulting composites were investigated. The specimens were tested for resistance to both 3-body and 2-body abrasion. The composites obtained by HP method (at 900°C/35 MPa) had higher density, hardness and resistance to abrasion than those obtained by SPS method.

TiC particulate reinforced Fe matrix composite compacts with controlled interfacial reaction was processed by spark plasma sintering after mechanical alloying. Milled powders were fabricated for 1-5 hours by spex shaker mill with the ball to powder ratio of 25:2. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on the Fe-40%TiC system can be synthesized by spark plasma sintering of the D’AE powders with TiH2-graphite powders under vacuum in the temperature range 1273-1473K for 5-20 min. TiC phase was formed by self combustion reaction with temperature increase. The specimen that was formed by sintering Fe-TiC powders displayed a microstructure of uniformly dispersed TiC grain in a continuous metal matrix. The densifications of the TiC-Fe materials were increased as the heat-treatment holding time increasing. In the same time, relative density and hardness of TiC-Fe sintering materials was increased.
