Since the high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC) stack require a range of auxiliary equipments to maintain operating conditions, it is necessary to consider operation of related components in the design of HT-PEMFC systems. In this paper, a thermodynamic model of a vehicular HT-PEMFC system using phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole membrane is developed. The power distribution and exergy loss of each component are derived according to thermodynamic analysis, where the stack and heat exchanger are the two components with the greatest exergy loss. In addition, ecological functions and improvement potentials are proposed to evaluate the system performance better. On this basis, the effects of stack inlet temperature, pressure, and stoichiometric on system performance are analyzed. The results showed that the energy efficiency, exergy efficiency and net output power of the system achieved the maximum when the inlet gases temperature is 406.1 K. The system performance is better when the cathode inlet pressure is relatively low and the anode inlet pressure is relatively high. Moreover, the stoichiometry should be reduced to improve the system output performance on the basis of ensuring sufficient gases reaction in the stack.

When the fuel supplied to a high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) is produced by hydrocarbon formation, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) may appear, resulting in decreased cell performance and durability. To study the effects of H2S on the performance and durability of the HT-PEMFC, a series of experiments was conducted. In the first step, the effects of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and platinum loading on cell performance were investigated and discussed under pure hydrogen operation conditions. Optimal PVDF and platinum compositions in the catalyst layer are suggested. Then, the effect of H2S on membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance with various platinum loadings was investigated by supplying hydrogen containing 5.2 ppm of H2S to the anode of the MEA. An electrochemical impedance spectroscope was employed to measure the impedance of the MEAs under various operating conditions. Finally, degradation of the MEA when supplied with hydrogen containing 5.2 ppm of H2S was analyzed and discussed. The results suggest that the performance of an MEA with 0.7 mg Pt cm−2 and 10% PVDF can be recovered by supplying pure hydrogen. The rate of voltage decrease is around 300 μV h−1 in the presence of H2S.

Performance of a high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) and the influence of different parameters on HT-PEMFC is analyzed in this study. Firstly, mathematical expression for energy efficiency, power density, exergy destruction and exergetic performance coefficient (EPC) are derived. Then, the relationship between the dimensionless power density, exergy destruction rate, exergetic performance coefficient (EPC) and energy efficiency is compared. Furthermore, the effect of flow rate, doping level, inlet pressure and film thickness are considered to evaluate the performance of HT-PEMFC. Results show that EPC not only considers exergetic loss rate to minimize exergetic loss, but also considers the power density of HT-PEMFC to maximize its power density and improve its efficiency, so EPC represents a better performance criterion. In addition, increasing inlet pressure and doping level can improve EPC and energy efficiency, respectively.

The durability and output performance of a fuel cell is highly influenced by the internal humidity, while in most developed models of open-cathode proton exchange membrane fuel cells (OC-PEMFC) the internal water content is viewed as a fixed value. Based on mass and energy conservation law, mass transport theory and electrochemistry principles, the model of humidity dynamics for OC-PEMFC is established in Simulink® environment, including the electrochemical model, mass flow model and thermal model. In the mass flow model, the water retention property and oxygen transfer characteristics of the gas diffusion layer is modelled. The simulation indicates that the internal humidity of OC-PEMFC varies with stack temperature and operating conditions, which has a significant influence on stack efficiency and output performance. In order to maintain a good internal humidity state during operation, this model can be used to determine the optimal stack temperature and for the design of a proper control strategy.

This paper proposes an integrated photovoltaic (PV) and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system for continuous energy harvesting under various operating conditions for use with a brushless DC motor. The proposed scheme is based on the incremental conductance (IncCond) algorithm combined with the sliding mode technique. Under changing atmospheric conditions, the energy conversion efficiency of a PV array is very low, leading to significant power losses. Consequently, increasing efficiency by means of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is particularly important. To manage such a hybrid system, control strategies need to be established to achieve the aim of the distributed system. Firstly, a Matlab/Simulink based model of the PV and PEMFC is developed and validated, as well as the incremental conductance sliding (ICS) MPPT technique; then, different MPPT algorithms are employed to control the PV array under nonuniform temperature and insolation conditions, to study these algorithms effectiveness under various operating conditions. Conventional techniques are easy to implement but produce oscillations at MPP. Compared to these techniques, the proposed technique is more efficient; it produces less oscillation at MPP in the steady state and provides more precise tracking.

A well-controlled Pt/PBI–CNT electrode provides not only good interfacial continuity but also numerous edge planes, which has strong electrochemical activity in HT-PEMFCs.
