The reaction of t-butylmagnesium chlorides with diastereomerically pure (R)-1,2-O-isopropylidene-3,5-O-sulfinyl-α-d-glucofuranose (R)-4 was found to be stopped at the stage of the corresponding, diastereoisomerically pure 1,2-O-isopropylidene-(5-O-α-d-glucofuranosyl) t-butanesulfinate (S)-10 for which the crystal structure and the (S)-absolute configuration was determined by X-ray crystallography. Comparison of the absolute configurations of the starting sulfite (R)-4, and t-butanesulfinate (S)-10 (which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group P212121, with the single compound molecule present in the asymmetric unit), clearly indicates that the reaction of nucleophilic substitution at the stereogenic sulfur atom in the sulfite (R)-4 occurs with the full inversion of configuration via the trigonal bipyramidal sulfurane intermediate 4c in which both the entering and leaving groups are located in apical positions.

The crystal structure of magnesium zinc divanadate, MgZnV2O7, was determined and refined from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction data. The title compound was synthesized by a solid-state reaction at 1023 K in air. The crystal structure is isotypic with Mn0.6Zn1.4V2O7 (C2/m; Z = 6) and is related to the crystal structure of thortveitite. The asymmetric unit contains two metal sites with statistically distributed magnesium and zinc atoms with the atomic ratio close to 1:1. One (Mg/Zn) metal site (M1) is located on Wyckoff position 8j and the other (M2) on 4h. Three V sites (all on 4i), and eight O (three 8j, four 4i, and one 2b) sites complete the asymmetric unit. The structure is an alternate stacking of V2O7 layers and (Mg/Zn) atom layers along [20\overline{1}]. It is distinct from other related structures in that each V2O7 layer consists of two groups: a V2O7 dimer and a V4O14 tetramer. Mixed-occupied M1 and M2 are coordinated by oxygen atoms in distorted trigonal bipyramidal and octahedral sites, respectively.

The synthesis of three new polysubstituted monoterpenic thiazolidin-4-ones, namely (Z)-3-methyl-2-{(E)-[(1R,4R)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ylidene]hydrazinylidene}thiazolidin-4-one, C14H21N3OS (2), (2Z,5Z)-5-[(dimethylamino)methylidene]-2-{(E)-[(1R,4R)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ylidene]hydrazinylidene}thiazolidin-4-one, C16H24N4OS (3), and (2Z,5Z)-5-[(dimethylamino)methylidene]-3-methyl-2-{(E)-[(1R,4R)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ylidene]hydrazinylidene}thiazolidin-4-one, C17H26N4OS (4), is reported, starting from the corresponding thiosemicarbazones obtained from naturally occurring (R)-camphor. All the newly obtained thiazolidin-4-ones have been fully characterized by HRMS and 1H and 13C (1D and 2D) NMR spectroscopy. Two of them, i.e. 2 and 3, were identified by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, confirming the synthetic pathway and the spectroscopic analyses. In 3, there are two roughly identical molecules within the asymmetric unit with the same absolute configuration. These two molecules are linked through N—H...O hydrogen bonds, building an R 2 2(8) graph-set motif.

The structure of Poly[(acetone-O)-3-((3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)(4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)methyl)-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-olate)sodium] was determined by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic system and was characterized thus P 21 21 21, a=9.967(2) Å, b=11.473(3) Å, c=22.176(5) Å. Z=4, V=2535.9(10) Å3. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares on F2 to final values of R1=0.0601 and wR2=0.1515.

Crystal structure of mono-β-alaninium chloride has been studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. The space group is Pbca, with the following lattice constants: a = 9.7414(5) Å, b = 7.4671(6) Å, c = 16.5288(11) Å, V = 1202.31(14) Å3, Z = 8. The asymmetric unit contains one β-alaninium cation (+NH3CH2CH2COOH) and one chloride anion. The structure was shown to consist of layers stacked along the c-axis and connected with each other by weak van der Waals forces. Each layer consists of two halves linked by hydrogen bonds between carbonyl and NH3+ groups and, also, between NH3+ groups and Cl- anions. Fourier transform infrared spectrum of β-alaninium chloride was recorded and analyzed. The spectroscopic results were found to support the conclusions of the structural study.

The crystal structure of a chiral m-cyclophane, the α-isomer of (S)-α-methoxy-α-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetate ester of 13-(methoxycarbonyl)-14-hydroxy-17-methyl-[11]-m-cyclophane (C30H37O5F3, FW = 534.62) has been solved by direct methods and refined by a least-squares procedure to a final R = 0.048 for 2756 independent reflections. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic system, a = 10.8077(13), b = 13.676(3), c = 19.060(4) Å, V = 2817.2 Å3, Z = 4, and the space group is P212121. The absolute configuration of the chiral plane, using the S-configuration of the α-methoxy-α-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetate ester as reference, is found to be S, in agreement with the X-ray result. The 14-membered ring has the slightly distorted rectangular conformation that has been described by Dale as the rectangular diamond-lattice conformation [3434]. The distortions, also observed in similar 14-membered rings, have been successfully approximated by molecular mechanics calculations.

Abstract The structure of the title compound has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The title compound is synthesized from the elements at 600 °C. Its crystal structure, derived from powder data [3] is refined by single crystal diffractometer data. The structure is trigonal (P3̅ml, α = 684.1(1), c = 724.4(1) pm); Pd2+ cations and PS43- anions form a network with an anti-Claudetite (AS2O3) type structure. The PS4 units are distinctly distorted from ideal tetrahedral symmetry. The Pd atoms have a planar environment of 4 S atoms.

A polycrystalline sample of a new polymorph of the title compound, C8H11NO2, was produced during a variable-temperature X-ray powder diffraction study. The crystal structure was solved at 1.67 Å resolution by simulated annealing from laboratory powder data collected at 250 K. Subsequent Rietveld refinement yielded an R wp of 0.070 to 1.54 Å resolution. The structure contains two molecules in the asymmetric unit, which form a C 2 2(8) chain motif via N—H...O hydrogen bonds.

In this paper, (2E,6E)-2,6-Bis(2,3,4-tri-methoxy -benzylidene)cyclohexanone (omitted as tmbcho) (1) was obtained by the reaction of acetic acid, tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexanone and 2,3,4-tri-methoxy-benzaldehyde. Three non-classic hydrogen bonds were observed in the compound. X-ray crystallography shows that the crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular C-H•••π interactions and it contains plenty of conjugated double bonds. The title compound was characterized by UV-vis and fluorescent spectral studies.
