Growing blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L., Highbush blueberry) as a berry crop is developing dynamically, especially in warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions of the world. When blueberry is cultivated on plantations, the bushes are pruned annually, and tons of leaves become waste. Thus, the aim of the present study was to create a preparation from blueberry leaves, study their chemical composition and determine their potential as a dietary supplement for the prophylactic and correction of the metabolic syndrome. Several schemes for obtaining extracts from blueberry leaves have been developed, including one with addition of arginine. A total of 18 phenolic substances were identified and quantified in the extracts by TLC and HPLC methods. Chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, and rutin were shown to be dominating constituents. Quantitative determination of hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, flavonoids and other phenolics in the extracts was performed by spectrophotometric method. The extracts administration led to a significant decrease in the level of glucose, insulin and triacylglycerols in blood serum of adult mature inbred rats with insulin resistance induced by the fructose-enriched diet. The most promising one was the extract modified with arginine. The determined hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activity of chemically standardized extracts from highbush blueberry leaves indicate the potential of this crop residue in utilization as a dietary supplement recommended in prevention of ailments associated with metabolic syndrome.

Hexazinone [3-cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione] toxicity, absorption, translocation, metabolism, and effect on photosynthesis were investigated with rooted cuttings of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosumL.), rabbiteye blueberry (V. asheiReade), and hollow goldenrod (Solidago fistulosaMiller # SOOFI). Highbush and rabbiteye blueberry plants were three times more tolerant to root applications of hexazinone than hollow goldenrod. Blueberry plants absorbed an average of 7.9% of root-applied14C-hexazinone and hollow goldenrod absorbed an average of 10.1%. An average of 6.8% of root-absorbed hexazinone (14C-label) was translocated from the roots of blueberry to stem and leaves. Radioactivity in hollow goldenrod was distributed equally between roots and shoots. The majority of radioactivity in both species was recovered as hexazinone. Root-absorbed hexazinone caused a rapid inhibition of photosynthesis in intact hollow goldenrod leaves. Root-absorbed hexazinone was capable of inhibiting photosynthesis in intact blueberry leaves; however, this occurred only when roots were exposed to high concentrations of hexazinone.

Title: Comparing the diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome in schoolchildren: a cross-sectional study. Introduction: The Metabolic Syndrome has been highlighted by being the result of the meeting of several cardiovascular risk factors. However, there is still no consensus for the determination of MS in children and adolescents, since the diagnostic criteria and its cut-off points considered at risk are not established and, depending on the criteria used, the prevalence of MS found in the literature may vary. Objective: To compare the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome in adolescents in the private school system. Method: This is a cross-sectional study of 325 adolescents from private schools in the urban area of a city in northeastern Brazil. The analysis was performed through the descriptive statistics, and the verification of the agreement between the results was given by the calculation of the Kappa index. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee (opinion 352.372). Results: In only 7 adolescents, the diagnosis was like the three definitions of metabolic syndrome. Regarding the number of components of metabolic syndrome, a large percentage of adolescents presented 02 or more altered parameters. Regarding the comparison of the diagnostic criteria, the criteria established by De Ferranti presented a higher positive proportion for the syndrome. Conclusion: There were differences between the proportions obtained through the three diagnostic criteria, which may impair the diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome in adolescents.

The purpose of the present study was to estimate the risk and severity of metabolic syndrome (MS) in 108 therapeutic profile patients of different age and gender. The method based on the numerical score of deviation of the main and additional components of MS from the standard values was used. It included the detection of insulin resistance and the waist to the hip circumference ratio as a criterion of abdominal obesity. The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 57.4% of patients, with its mild, moderately severe and very severe forms being documented in 35.5%, 29.0% and 35.5% of the cases respectively. Mild MS was occurred much more often in women than in men in whom moderately severe and very severe forms predominated. MS manifestations were totally absent only in 3 women. In the remaining patients, the low, moderate and high risk of development of MS was estimated at 25.6%, 32.5% and 41.9% respectively. In groups with different risk and severity of MS, the average age of men was lower than in women, the difference amounting to 10 years and more in the groups including patients with mild and moderately severe MS. The proposed method of the stratification allows the personalized approach to diagnosis and correction of metabolic disorders, determination of the necessary volume of medical aid, and taking decisions about the treatment of individual patients.

The aim of this research was to study the influence of smoking on components of the metabolic syndrome and their relationship in the indigenous population of the Arctic territory of Yakutia. Methods and Results: The material for the study was collected under expeditionary conditions in the Arctic territory of Yakutia in places of compact residence of indigenous peoples. Using the continuous method, we examined 348 subjects (225 women and 123 men). The average age of the respondents was 48.16±0.52 years (49.71±0.63 years for women and 44.98±0.91 years for men). The research program included the following sections: a questionnaire for objective assessment of state; anthropometric examination; assessment of blood pressure (BP); determination of insulin and fasting glucose. In the survey, only those who smoked at least 1 cigarette per day during the last 12 months were considered smokers. The obtained results indicate that the indigenous population of the northern territory of Yakutia has a high frequency of risk factors for the development of cardiovascular pathology, such as overweight, obesity, and smoking. Overweight is equally common in both men and women; obesity is almost 2.5 times more common in women. An increase in body weight and systolic BP is not associated with smoking; however, the simultaneous combination of all these factors can affect the risk of cardiovascular incidents. A negative relationship between BMI and smoking was found. An increased index of insulin resistance is associated with the simultaneous spread of obesity among nonsmokers. The same association of glucose level with BP was obtained in both smokers and nonsmokers. Conclusion: Metabolic disorders in the indigenous population of the northern territory of Yakutia are caused by a change in the traditional way of life and nutrition, with a decrease in physical activity and a lack of adherence to a healthy lifestyle.

Aim. To study of the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome and its components among residents of the Kyrgyz Republic.Methods. This study was conducted within the framework of the international «INTEREPID» project, in which, in addition to Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan participated. Study type is cross-sectional epidemiological study. A cohort was formed randomly, consisting of 1672 people, representative of sex and age structure of the population. In addition to completing the questionnaire, we performed the following examinations: estimation of height, body weight and waist size, measurement of blood pressure and heart rate, electrocardiogram, as well as the determination of a number of biochemical parameters: sugar and creatinine levels in blood and lipid profile (low density lipoproteins, high density lipoproteins and triglycerides levels).Results.Among the residents of the Kyrgyz Republic the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 30.9% with predominance of its occurrence among women (33.3% vs. 27.7% in men, pConclusion. Among the residents of the Kyrgyz Republic the high prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was registered with certain gender and ethnic features of its components occurrence.
