A 9-year-old cat was referred with multiple, raised, ulcerative and non-ulcerative nodules in the periocular area, sclera and ear-base region, and on the ventral aspect of the tongue. In addition, a progressive ulcerative skin nodule on the tail was observed. Fine-needle aspirations of multiple nodules from the eyelid and sclera revealed the presence of histiocytes with numerous acid-fast intracellular bacilli. The replication of slowly growing mycobacteria in liquid media was detected from biopsied nodules after three months of incubation. The molecular characterization of the isolate identified Mycobacterium (M.) lepraemurium as the cause of the infection. The cat was treated with a combination of surgical excision and a four-week course of antimicrobial therapy including rifampicin combined with clarithromycin. This is an unusual manifestation of feline leprosy and the first molecularly confirmed M. lepraemurium infection in a cat with ocular involvement in Europe. The successful combination of a surgical and antimycobacterial treatment regimen is reported.

ABSTRACT The osteosarcoma (OSA) is the most diagnosed primary bone cancer in canine patients. This work reports a case of a canine, six years old, mongrel, female, intact, with an OSA in the hard palate. Physical examination detected a firm mass in the palate. Thoracic radiographs, hematological and biochemical exams, histopathological exams and computed tomography were requested. A chondroblastic OSA was diagnosed and the tumor was characterized by immunohistochemistry. There was never evidence of metastasis in this case. The treatment consisted of the combination of conventional chemotherapy, metronomic chemotherapy, and palliative care, aiming at greater survival and well-being of the patient since surgical excision was not possible due to the location and extension of the tumor. Osteogenic sarcomas of the hard palate are rarely seen and described in the literature. In this article we present a characterization of the osteosarcoma with uncommon localization in the hard palate.

Cantilever resonators based on the roof tile-shaped modes have recently demonstrated their suitability for liquid media monitoring applications. The early studies have shown that certain combinations of dimensions and order of the mode can maximize the Q-factor, what might suggest a competition between two mechanisms of losses with different geometrical dependence. To provide more insight, a comprehensive study of the Q-factor and the resonant frequency of these modes in microcantilever resonators with lengths and widths between 250 and 3000 µm and thicknesses between 10 and 60 µm is presented. These modes can be efficiently excited by a thin piezoelectric AlN film and a properly designed top electrode layout. The electrical and optical characterization of the resonators are performed in liquid media and then their performance is evaluated in terms of quality factor and resonant frequency. A quality factor as high as 140 was measured in isopropanol for a 1000 × 900 × 10 µm3 cantilever oscillating in the 11th order roof tile-shaped mode at 4 MHz; density and viscosity resolutions of 10−6 g/mL and 10−4 mPa·s, respectively are estimated for a geometrically optimized cantilever resonating below 1 MHz.

Background: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is commonly used as a diagnostic tool for the evaluation of lymphoproliferative diseases. Cytomorphology alone is often insufficient for the diagnosis and subclassification of lymphoma; therefore, flow cytometry (FC) plays an important role in the characterization of lymphoproliferative disorders. This study reviews our experience with FC on liver FNA at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Methods: 2,424 liver FNAs performed over a 21-year period were reviewed for clinical FC data (n = 74) or a subsequent diagnosis of lymphoma in the liver without FC data (n = 40). Results: In our study, 114 cases (4.7%) were included out of the 2,424 liver FNAs performed during the study period. Lymphoma was diagnosed 79 times. Cytomorphology alone was diagnostic of lymphoma in 45 cases, and in 33 cases both the cytomorphology and the FC were consistent with a diagnosis of lymphoma. Neither FC nor cytomorphology were diagnostic of lymphoma on 1 specimen. In 39 cases, FC had negative results on a lesion suspicious for lymphoma based on cytomorphology. In several nonlymphoma cases, FC provided information that allowed further subclassification of the neoplasm. Conclusion: FC is a useful adjuvant diagnostic test for liver FNAs performed on patients with lymphoproliferative disorders.
