In this work, hierarchical MoS2/C quasi-hollow microspheres are prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal process with the addition of glucose. The glucose is not only inclined to form the roundish sphere in the completion of the synthesis of MoS2, but at the same time the microspheres formed by the glucose can act as the nuclei on which the MoS2 grows. Glucose, acting as a nucleating agent, has the advantages of being low-cost and environmentally friendly, which can simplify the fabrication process. The interiors of the MoS2/C samples are multi-hole and quasi-hollow, which is beneficial for the insertion and extraction of lithium ions. For the first time, we demonstrate that hierarchical-structured MoS2/C quasi-hollow microspheres exhibit an excellent cycling stability and rate capability in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and are significantly superior to the bulk MoS2. The method presented in this article may provide a simple, clean. and economical strategy for the preparation of MoS2/C microspheres as a feasible and promising anode material for LIBs.

Carbon materials are generally employed as supercapacitor electrodes due to their low- cost, high-chemical stability and environmental friendliness. However, the design of carbon structures with large surface area and controllable porous structure remains a daunt challenge. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) hybrid aerogel with different contents of MoS2 nanosheets in 3D graphene aerogel (MoS2-GA) was synthesized through a facial hydrothermal process. The influences of MoS2 content on microstructure and subsequently on electrochemical properties of MoS2-GA are systematically investigated and an optimized mass ratio with MoS2: GA of 1:2 is chosen to achieve high mechanical robustness and outstanding electrochemical performance in the hybrid structure. Due to the large specific surface area, porous structure and continuous charge transfer network, such MoS2-GA electrodes exhibit high specific capacitance, good rate capability and excellent cyclic stability, showing great potential in large-scale and low-cost fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors.

Hematite nanospindles with a uniform size of [Formula: see text]270[Formula: see text]nm in length and [Formula: see text]90[Formula: see text]nm in width are prepared using a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) serves as a structure-directing agent to control the primary morphology and aggregations. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the electrode of sodium alginate (SA) binder exhibits a much better electrochemical performance than that with the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder. Remarkably, the electrode using SA binder can deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 979[Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] after 50 cycles and prominent rate capability. The microstructural evolution of the nanospindles after the electrochemical cycling is investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our results may provide important mechanistic insights for the design of nanostructured anode materials for LIBs.

Hierarchical flower-like Ni3V2O8/Co3V2O8 composites were prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal process. When employed as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the fabricated Ni3V2O8/Co3V2O8 composites exhibited significantly improved lithium storage performances with superior discharge capacity (1142.7[Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] at 100[Formula: see text]mA[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text]), excellent cycling stability (933.2[Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] after 600 cycles at current density of 500[Formula: see text]mA[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text]) and remarkable rate capability (607.6[Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] even at rate of 5000[Formula: see text]mA g[Formula: see text]). The superior electrochemical properties could be attributed to the hierarchical flower-like structure and impressive synergistic interplay between Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8, which resulted in improved electronic conductivity and stable mass transfer. This interesting hybridization strategy might open a new avenue to prepare micro/nanostructured composites for high-performance energy storage devices.

Nb18W8O69 (9Nb2O5×8WO3) is the tungsten-rich end-member of the Wadsley–Roth crystallographic shear (cs) structures within the Nb2O5–WO3 series. It has the largest block size of any known, stable Wadsley–Roth phase, comprising 5 ´ 5 units of corner-shared MO6 octahedra between the shear planes, giving rise to 2 nm ´ 2 nm blocks. Rapid lithium intercalation is observed in this new candidate battery material and 7Li pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy – measured in a battery electrode for the first time at room temperature – reveals superionic lithium conductivity. In addition to its promising rate capability, Nb18W8O69 adds a piece to the larger picture of our understanding of high-performance Wadsley–Roth complex metal oxides.
