With shortage of water becoming a major concern in many areas, use of recycled water is a necessity for a growing number of municipalities. This paper describes a case study in which two alternatives were considered for upgrading an existing wastewater treatment plant with the goal of producing recycled water. The first alternative consisted of conventional secondary and tertiary unit processes while the second alternative included the advanced treatment technology of membrane bioreactor (MBR). Also, two alternatives were evaluated for disinfection of recycled water; chlorine gas and UV system. The more advanced treatment technologies (MBR + UV), which produce the higher quality recycled water, resulted in higher cost. The paper discusses the design and project execution approaches as how the more expensive advanced treatment processes were made cost competitive with the conventional treatment processes.

The use of conventional textile wastewater treatment processes becomes drastically challenged to environmental engineers with increasing more and more restrictive effluent quality by water authorities. Conventional treatment such as biological treatment discharges will no longer be tolerated as 53% of 87 colours are identified as non-biodegradable. Advanced oxidation processes hold great promise to provide alternative for better treatment and protection of environment, thus are reviewed in this paper. An overview of basis and treatment efficiency for different AOPs are considered and presented according to their specific features.

The article reveals researches aimed to estimate if it is possible to intensify wastewater treatment processes by means of floating feed. There was a lab-scale experiment carried out in conditions of artificial wastewater treatment. Laboratory model to perform conventional treatment process was assembled and included aeration reactor and secondary clarifier. It is stated that optimal amount of floating material inside the reactors has to be no less 10% of volume; otherwise, it may not provide positive result. However, if this amount is higher than 30% of volume it may require higher costs. Three ratios were chosen for current lab-scale experiment: 10%, 20% and 30% of reactor volume. In this viewpoint there were four laboratory models in operation with three different amount of floating material inside. The fourth model has no floating media to compare the parameters of operation. The material in use is made of polystyrene to provide its floating ability and accumulation of sludge biomass. The samples of wastewater were investigated to according to the requirements of standard methods. Model with floating material provided 95% efficiency for BOD5 removal and 83% efficiency of nitrogen removal, comparing to efficiency of 92% and 55% correspondingly in the model with no floating material.

The biological method of wastewater treatment is a comprehensive multicomponent process the activities of the enzyme system being the key component of it. It is known that dehydrogenases have been one of the most important enzymes the ensure the biological process. The complicated mechanism of the action of enzymes has not been fully described so far however, in the practice of monitoring biological treatment processes, an indicator of the dehydrogenase activity of sludge is used. The research results provided for supplementing the available information with actual data on the interdependence of the level of dehydrogenase activity of sludge and indicators of individual process parameters of biological treatment. It was shown that the mode of operation of aeration tanks (organic matter load on sludge, dose of activated sludge, etc.) and the values of the initial dehydrogenase activity and dehydrogenase activity of the same sludge sample with weakly concentrated solution (DASН2О) are interconnected and depend on the organic load on sludge. The results of the study can be used to control the biological process of wastewater treatment. The biological method of wastewater treatment is a comprehensive multicomponent process the activities of the enzyme system being the key component of it.
