The photocatalytic activity of TiO2–SiO2 coated and TiO2 coated on 100% cotton and PES/Co fabrics was investigated through the self–cleaning of red wine stains and coffee stains. It was shown that a TiO2 species could be produced at temperatures of 25 °C, 40 °C and 60 °C with acceptable photo–activity and TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites were prepared by a sol–gel process at a low temperature. The discoloration of red wine and coffee led to CO2 evolution that was more efficient for TiO2–SiO2 coated cotton for samples than of TiO2 coated ones. The textile surface did not show any change after several consecutive light–induced discoloration cycles of a red wine stain and coffee stain. The structural properties of these nanocomposites were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR). The scanning electron microscope (SEM) photo showed that the TiO2–SiO2 layer is thicker than TiO2 layer on the cotton fabric and PES/Co fabric and the Ti–particles were always surrounded by amorphous SiO2 and never alone by themselves. The TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites were coated onto cotton and PES/Co fabrics by a simple dip–pad–dry–cure process.

ABSTRACTThin coatings of Al2O3, and Y2O3, have been prepared on desized Nicalon yarn. The layers were deposited by dip coating in homogeneous, alcohol solutions of partially hydrolyzed metal alkoxides. The coating thicknesses could be controlled by multiple dipping. The uniformity of the coatings was affected by the alkoxide concentration. Solutions containing greater than 1 wt % equivalent oxide resulted in oxide bridging the void between the fibers.Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) studies on alumina coatings formed by dip coating 300 mesh nickel grids, have shown that either eta or gamma alumina is formed after heating at temperatures as low as 700 °C. The rate of grain growth increases as the temperature increases. In addition, increased grain growth is observed for films produced from solutions with higher water:metal ratios. The strength of coated fibers heat treated in air after coating has been determined. Alumina, and yttria coatings reduce the strength of the fiber after heating at temperatures above 900 °C. Scanning Auger analysis suggests that the coating is reacting with the fiber at these high temperatures.

This research, deals with modification of sol gel process for the synthesis of porous TiO2-PEG thin films with good structural integrity for environmental self-cleaning applications. Relatively, by adding the PEG with various molecular weights (300, 400, and 600) could influence the formation of TiO2 films structure and adhesion. Moreover, the formation of porous TiO2 associated with larger pores will accelerate the mass transfer of the treated contaminants in the larger pore channels. The advantages of the unique structures of as-prepared TiO2₂ films in the application of environmental self-cleaning systems are extensively studied by characterizing the produced films using various advanced characterization tools. Adhesion of TiO2 thin films become smooth and better surface with increasing the coating layers. The X-ray Diffraction spectrum of prepared coating shows present of anatase phase as major phase.

ABSTRACTIn this work the CSGP was applied for preparation of Pt-WOx and its coatings on carbon black, silver and titan substrates. Saturated tungsten sol (0.15M) was prepared by dissolving (NH4)4W5O17 2.5 H2O in ascorbic acid solution. To this solution H2PtCl6 was added to obtain the molar ratio Pt:W=l. After evaporation and heating at 700°C for 2h homogeneous yellow-green powders were obtained. Another part of this solution was diluted with ethanol and after ultrasonic mixing used for preparation of coatings on Ag and Ti substrates by the immersion technique. Gel layers were dried at 200°C for 20h and then calcined at 700°C for 2h. The resulting white colored layers (thickness 10–65μm) were very adherent. Ascorbate aqueous tungsten-platinum sol diluted to 0.03 or 0.06 M ΣMe was used for preparation of Pt-W (10 and 20 %) catalyst by impregnation of carbon black Vulcan XC-72, followed by thermal treatment in air, argon and hydrogen atmospheres.

AbstractNanocrystalline anatase titanium dioxide films were successfully produced on cotton fabrics from alkoxide solutions under ambient pressure using the low temperature sol-gel process. At a temperature as low as 40°C, only anatase phase formed from X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). Field scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images show the formation of uniform continuous films of titanium dioxide on cotton fabrics. The self-cleaning properties of these fabrics were evaluated by measuring anti-bacterial activities and the decomposition of a colorant Neolan Blue 2G. The results indicated that anatase treated cotton fabrics exhibited good self-cleaning performance.
