Due to the elderly’s limited physical ability, their mode choice behavior with particular demand for the traffic system is significantly distinguished compared to young people. The emergence of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and Shared Autonomous Vehicles (SAVs) will allow the elderly to travel independently and offer more mode choices. However, emerging vehicles will continue to coexist with other traditional modes such as public transport. This paper aims to explore the internal mechanism of the elderly’s choice behavior among public transport, AVs, and SAVs. We integrated the relevant factors by expanding the ecological model and used the Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes (MIMIC) model to analyze the constructs’ relationship. The results show that the elderly believe that public transport, AVs, and SAVs are useful and convenient travel modes for themselves, affecting intention significantly. In addition, the elderly’s well-being and social influence during travel are also significant constructs for their behavioral intention. The research could provide academic supports for the traffic management departments when making relevant policies and measures for the elderly.

Abstract Background This paper provides insight into the opportunity offered by shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) to improve urban populations’ spatial equity in accessibility. It provides a concrete implementation model for SAVs set to improve equity in accessibility and highlights the need of regulation in order for SAVs to help overcome identified spatial mismatches. Methodology Through the formulation of linear regression models, the relationship between land-use and transportation accessibility (by car and public transport) and socio-economic well-being indicators is tested on district-level in four European cities: Paris, Berlin, London and Vienna. Accessibility data is used to analyse access to points of interest within given timespans by both car and public transport. To measure equity in socio-economic well-being, three district-level proxies are introduced: yearly income, unemployment rate and educational attainment. Results In the cities of Paris, London and Vienna, as well as partially in Berlin, positive effects of educational attainment on accessibility are evidenced. Further, positive effects on accessibility by yearly income are found in Paris and London. Additionally, negative effects of an increased unemployment rate on accessibility are observed in Paris and Vienna. Through the comparison between accessibility by car and public transportation in the districts of the four cities, the potential for SAVs is evidenced. Lastly, on the basis of the findings a ‘SAV identification matrix’ is created, visualizing the underserved districts in each of the four cities and the need of equity enhancing policy for the introduction of SAVs is emphasized.

In recent years, the relationship between transportation and subjective well-being has been a major subject. Well-being is a factor that can affect travelers’ psychology and transport mode choice. For this reason, policymakers have attempted to improve travelers’ subjective well-being and promote sustainable modes of transport. For a better understanding of these factors, a questionnaire-based survey was conducted to identify the travel eudaimonia aspect of subjective well-being (comfort, safety, autonomy, self-confidence, physical, and mental health), for the various means of transport in the city of Thessaloniki. During the survey, 300 valid questionnaires were completed. The collection of the above data was followed by statistical analysis. The aim of the analysis was to identify the factors of travel eudaimonia that contributed to the mode choice. For that reason, four ordinal regression models were developed to determine how travel eudaimonia affected the usage frequency of the four available means of transport in the city of Thessaloniki (i.e., private car, bicycle, public transport, walking). Walking was rated higher than other modes in all factors, whilst cycling was rated high in physical and mental health, self-confidence, and autonomy, but low in comfort and safety. Public transport scored very low in all factors, demonstrating the poor quality of service provided by the city’s public transport. Moreover, from the ordinal regression models’ results, it could be demonstrated that travel eudaimonia factors had a significant role to play in mode choice. Recognizing the impact of these factors on transport mode choice is particularly useful for policymakers, researchers, and engineers, as it helps them to make informed decisions about what improvements are needed to promote sustainable modes of transport (mainly walking, cycling, and secondarily, public transport).

An effective way to optimize traffic structures is by changing travel costs, thereby moving travelers from private transportation to public transportation. However, according to the existing studies, the traveler will not transfer from one mode to another unless the change in travel utility is greater than the indifference threshold. Therefore, the “indifference threshold” is one of the most important factors influencing a traveler’s choice of behavior. This study defines the “indifference threshold” as the traveler’s sensitivity to changes in travel utilities. In the framework of the theory of planned behavior (TPB), a structural equation model (SEM) considering the indifference threshold is established to analyze a traveler’s mode choice behavior. The analysis results showed that a travelers’ sensitivity to changes in travel utilities has the greatest impact on mode-choice behavior intentions and mode choice behavior. Perceptual behavior control has the strongest influence on travel choice behavior. In addition, in order to further explore the heterogeneity of a traveler’s behavior, the travelers were subdivided into four types, by establishing a latent class model (LCM) considering the indifference threshold. Finally, different traffic management suggestions are proposed for different types of travelers.

Increasing use of single or fewer occupant vehicles has increased traffic congestion and transport-related emissions. Public transport as mass transit options are increasingly being encouraged amongst travelers to use, as this is an influential strategy to improve the transport network performance. This paper presents a study based on a revealed preference survey conducted on a random sample of 4467 respondents to understand the influential factors affecting the users’ choice of mass transit in Bangkok, Thailand. This study identified an inversely proportional relationship of socio-economic and spatial attributes on public transport mode choice. The binary logit model was employed to compare the utility of private vehicles and mass transit modes. The results showed that gender, age, average income, auto ownership, total travel cost in private transport, total travel time in public transport and distance range from home to mass transit station were the factors that influenced travelers’ mode choice behavior. Moreover, to ascertain the effects of explanatory variables which influence the likelihood of Thai travelers, another binary logit model analysis was utilized by the four distance ranges condition. The studied results showed that there were few significant differences in the propensity to use mass transit. Due to the longer distance of the station, total travel time in public transport was not affected by the Thai travelers mode choice. This research will aid transport authorities and planners to gain knowledge on the impact of socio-economic and spatial behavior of public transport users on their mode choice, resulting in the development in sustainable transport in Bangkok, Thailand.

Abstract. Prospective Memory (PM; i.e., the ability to remember to perform planned tasks) represents a key proxy of healthy aging, as it relates to older adults’ everyday functioning, autonomy, and personal well-being. The current review illustrates how PM performance develops across the lifespan and how multiple cognitive and non-cognitive factors influence this trajectory. Further, a new, integrative framework is presented, detailing how those processes interplay in retrieving and executing delayed intentions. Specifically, while most previous models have focused on memory processes, the present model focuses on the role of executive functioning in PM and its development across the lifespan. Finally, a practical outlook is presented, suggesting how the current knowledge can be applied in geriatrics and geropsychology to promote healthy aging by maintaining prospective abilities in the elderly.
