Sustainability of the open pit mining and technical system (MTS) is one of its key goals in the changing conditions of the external and internal environment. All MTS’s subsystems must function in concert to achieve this goal. The structure of the MTS is formed by many subsystems and elements, which are evaluated by a significant number of indicators. A comprehensive assessment of the MTS for all possible indicators is a complex and time-consuming task. However, each subsystem and element of the MTS has a different effect on the sustainability of this system. The MTS’s parameters change significantly during transition periods, for example, at a new stage of open-pit mining or when switching to an open-underground method of developing mineral deposits. The MTS’s sustainability declines during the transition periods. Changes in the parameters of technological processes during these periods can have a negative impact on the state of the economic and social subsystems of mining enterprises, as well as on the environment. Ensuring the sustainability of an MTS during transition periods requires the development of new approaches and principles for managing the work of mining enterprises, based on the alignment of economic goals, with goals in the field of ecology and social development. The study substantiates the key role of one of the MTS subsystems—the opening-up of an opencast system (OOS). It is shown that this system has a decisive influence on sustainable functioning and development. The systematization of the principles of sustainable functioning and development of mining enterprises and its systems has been carried out. Four groups of principles are distinguished: system-wide principles of management, principles of development of mining enterprises, principles of MTS development, and principles of the MTS’s subsystem development. The proposed system of principles is based on the idea of a sequential transformation of the subsystems at all stages of design and operation. A feature of the proposal system of principles is the consideration of economic, social, and environmental aspects to ensure the specified parameters for the sustainable functioning and development of mining enterprises. The results of the analysis of the factors of the external and internal environment of the MTS are presented. The parameters and indicators for assessing the sustainability of OOS and MTSs were selected and substantiated. The justified parameters and indicators were ranked using the fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results of the assessment showed a high convergence of expert opinions on a group of economic parameters, which were rather high in technical and technological parameters. However, there is a divergence of expert opinions on social and environmental parameters. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the current management decisions are aimed at ensuring the economic and technological sustainability of MTS functioning, while achieving the goals of sustainable development of this system is not ensured. The methodology developed and presented in the study can be used to assess the sustainability of the functioning and development of MTSs.

The optimal design of roads in mines is very crucial to the success of the mining operation. However, the transportation roads of mines are often inadequately designed and rarely properly maintained in order to save cost. In order to acquire the optimum track of road for the open pit coal mine, analysis of the topography factor, land usage, environment, and geology are needed on the basic engineering design phase. Considering the amount of overlapping and influencing criteria, the method of Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP) is used. FAHP is the combination of AHP with the mathematical method of fuzzy. The difference between FAHP and AHP is the implementation of the level of importance in the paired comparison of the comparison matrices, which uses Triangular Fuzzy Numbers (TFN). Following the geometric planning of the open pit coal mine haul road, several track alternatives are considered. Fuzzy AHP was used to select the final alternative that should be implemented. The criteria for the fuzzy AHP operation were acquired through expert opinions. The resulting criteria and scores were processed, with the final result of a feasibility ranking of each track alternative. Fuzzy AHP were proven to be very effective to be used in determining the optimum haul road track alternative for an open pit coal mine.

The window glazing system provides comfortable living environment for residents and also exhibits the esthetics of architectural design. Its quality is dependent upon glass material selection; there are many factors determining glazing material selection, which might further affects the building safety and energy savings. An analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to analyze the trade-off of these impact factors. In the survey, both positive and negative impact factors on the glazing material selection are considered. The results, based on 40 expertise questionnaires, indicated that “performance”, in overall, was perceived to be most important core selection criterion for the green glazing material, but among all assessed items, “hazardous substance release” was concerned the most. The “appearance” was regarded as a minor factor in this analysis. In addition, BIPV alternative was also ranked in the first position regardless of criteria weight variations. The results provide valuable information for building material manufacturers, architects and interior designers in selecting glass material in their the glazing system.

Hungarian scientific practice focuses mainly on statistical methods to elaborate sector-specific trends. This paper aims to offer another alternative. The author’s view is that in rapidly and significantly changing markets, data extrapolation is not necessarily the ideal way to forecast certain trends of the sector. Agricultural Supply Chains have been restructured lately. There are remarkable developments in fields such as: warehousing systems, telematic systems, transportation. This is one of the reasons several drivers may alter the trends determined previously by statistical professionals. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) synthesizes expert opinions concerning the future, so it is a decision-supporting method and therefore more flexible to the changes of the sector. The author introduces the application of the AHP for Agricultural Logistics Trends.

In this paper, a quantitative multicriteria futuristic fuzzy decision hierarchy (MFFDH)-based SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis has been carried out to determine priorities among significant factors related to tourism's internal and external environment. In MFFDH model, the fuzzy logic is combined with analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to overcome the uncertainty in decision making process. The utilization of MFFDH with SWOT yields analytically determined priorities for the factors included in SWOT analysis and makes them more commensurable. The hybrid method has been applied in connection with a case study on tourism industry in Agra (India) and result indicates that the factors related to tourism's internal environment (strengths and weaknesses) are relatively more important than external factors (opportunities and threats). In addition, strengths group turned out to have the highest priorities while threats group have the lowest priorities.

Coal produced in open pit mines should be moved to thermic power plants for production of power. Thermic power plants require very large amounts of coal. In transportation process of this coal, both costs and technical parameters should be considered. Common alternative transportation modes in this process are belt conveyors, truck types, suspension rail conveying systems, pipelines and railways. Selection of one of these modes is influenced by transportation distance, inclination of the haulage road, amount of coal reserve, investment costs, production capacity and unit production cost of the open pit mine. In this study, advantages and disadvantages of alternative transportation modes are analysed using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (F-AHP). The results revealed, belt conveyors and trucks transportation by are superior to others.

Some valuable minerals, such as lignite, are extracted through open-pit mining works. After the cessation of mining activity, large-scale gaps result in the landscape. These gaps, also called “remaining gaps”, represent some of the roughest types of environmental impacts. After the cessation of mining activity, recovery and ecological restoration works are required. However, it is first necessary to carry out risk assessment studies considering the possible future influences on the final slopes. For this study, flooding of the remaining lignite open-pits gaps was considered as the ecological restoration option. The study was based on extensive research, including sampling, laboratory tests, statistical-mathematical processing, hypothesis formulation, evaluations, interpretations, and field observations, regarding the rock behavior and occurrence of negative geotechnical phenomena (geotechnical phenomena that have a negative impact and a risk on the integrity of the environment and local communities, such as landslides, rockfalls, liquefaction, suffosis) during the flooding process. This paper’s originality consists of combining the methods and methodologies developed with the help of classic methods (Fellenius, Janbu, and Bishop methods) and probabilistic ones (Rosenblueth method) existing in the specialized literature for solving the proposed problem and structuring the information similar to a guide.
