The community structure of benthic diatoms and water environmental characteristics were extensively investigated to assess the aquatic ecosystem health of the Wutong River (Heilongjiang Province, China). Several diatom indices were calculated, and a benthic diatom index based on biotic integrity (BD-IBI) was developed. Principal component analysis (PCA), Spearman correlation analysis (CA), cluster analysis, redundancy analysis (RDA), and the box plot analysis were used to analyze the benthic diatom communities, assess the river ecosystem health, and compare the applicability of different indexes. The results indicated that Gomphonema parvulum and other tolerant species were the dominant species. Meanwhile, most sites were in “poor” or “very poor” condition according to the diatom indexes evaluation, indicating that the river has been disturbed by human activities. The sampling sites of the Wutong River were divided into three groups based on different pollution levels. The derived BD-IBI included four individual metrics of different aspects, showed strong distinguishability for three grouping and robust correlation with environmental variables. Of all the indexes selected, IBI performed the best, followed by the species-level diatom indexes and the genus-level diatom indexes.

Benthic diatom communities dominate sheltered shallow inner coastal waters of the atidal Southern Baltic Sea. However, their photosynthetic oxygen production and respiratory oxygen consumption is rarely evaluated. In the Baltic Sea carbon budget benthic diatom communities are often not included, since phytoplankton is regarded as the main primary producer. Therefore, two wind-protected stations (2–49-cm depths) were investigated between July 2010 and April 2012 using undisturbed sediment cores in combination with planar oxygen optodes. We expected strong fluctuations in the biological activity parameters in the incubated cores over the course of the seasons. The sediment particles at both stations were dominated by fine sand with a median grain size of 131–138 µm exhibiting an angular shape with many edges, which were less mobile compared to exposed coastal sites of the Southern Baltic Sea. These sand grains inhabited dense communities of rather small epipsammic diatoms (<10 µm). Chlorophyll a as a biomass parameter for benthic diatoms fluctuated from 64.8 to 277.3-mg Chl. a m−2 sediment surface. The net primary production and respiration rates exhibited strong variations across the different months at both stations, ranging from 12.9 to 56.9 mg O2 m−2 h−1 and from −6.4 to −137.6 mg O2 m−2 h−1, respectively. From these data, a gross primary production of 13.4 to 59.5 mg C m−2 h−1 was calculated. The results presented confirmed strong seasonal changes (four-fold amplitude) for the activity parameters and, hence, provided important production biological information for sheltered sediments of the Southern Baltic Sea. These data clearly indicate that benthic diatoms, although often ignored until now, represent a key component in the primary production of these coastal habitats when compared to similar studies at other locations of the Baltic Sea and, hence, should be considered in any carbon budget model of this brackish water ecosystem.

(1) Urbanization significantly influences the ecosystems of rivers in various ways, including the so-called loading effect of wastewater production. Benthic diatoms are used in ecological status assessments of waters. Beside species composition, traits can be used as indicators. We aimed to evaluate how the loading of the large city of Budapest manifests in the physico-chemical variables of the River Danube and what species composition and trait response this loading results in for the benthic diatom communities. (2) Weekly samplings were performed at points upstream and downstream of Budapest on both riverbanks. Samples were compared, based on general physical-chemical variables and the concentration of thirty-four elements, as well as species composition and seven traits of species of diatom communities. Ecological status was assessed using the Specific Pollution Sensitivity Index (IPS). (3) Only a few measured environmental variables showed differences between the sampling points, suggesting that the nutrient loading has significantly decreased due to the installation of several efficiently working wastewater treatment plants since the introduction of the European Union Water Framework Directive. In contrast, the species composition and traits of species showed the effect of land use. Benthic diatoms indicate the environmental changes caused by land use in the longer-term, while chemical measurements reflect instantaneous status.

Fifty one okra F1 hybrids (using 17 lines as female and 3 testers as male parent) were evaluated in RCBD design during two different consecutive seasons (summer and rainy). Phenotypic coefficient of variability (PCV) was higher than genotypic coefficient of variability (GCV) for all studied character exhibiting environmental effects on the expression of characters. Heritability (h2b) along with genetic advance per cent of mean was found highest for character YVMV (86.95% and 150.61%). All the 51 okra hybrids were grouped into 4 distinct clusters in which Cluster II was the largest cluster having 28 F1s (54.90% of total F1s) followed by Cluster I with 14 F1s (27.45% of total F1s). Out of the major 6 PCs, 4 principal components (PC1, PC2, PC3 and PC4) accounted with proportionate values of 22.61, 17.22, 11.87 and 10.63%, respectively and contributed 62.33 % of the cumulative variation having Eigen value more than one. Moreover, based on PCs and genetic divergence in Cluster I and Cluster IV for plant height, YVMV and number of fruit per plant is important to identify the best cross combination (Arka Abhay × Arka Anamika) in okra. Therefore, the best cross combinations for improvement in various economic traits can be recommended on the basis of genetic divergence and principal component analysis in okra.

AbstractDisturbance events to coastal habitats such as extreme heat events, storms, or floods have increased in magnitude and frequency in recent years due to anthropogenic climate change and the destruction of habitats. These events constitute a major threat to many ecological communities and global biodiversity. Disturbance history influences ecosystem response to novel disturbances such that communities that have previously been exposed to disturbances should be more resilient to new disturbances compared to previously sheltered communities. This principle is defined as ecological memory. Resilience should also increase with access to a larger species pool, because a larger species pool increases species and response diversity of a community. One possibility of increasing the local species pool is connectivity via adequate dispersal between habitat patches with different species compositions in metacommunities. In a laboratory experiment, we exposed benthic diatom communities of different origin to a mechanical disturbance, simulated dispersal in half of the communities, and measured their chlorophyll a concentration over time. The local diatom communities originated from different locations on an intertidal flat that varied in hydrodynamic exposure history. Hydrodynamic exposure disturbs the sediment, and thereby determines sediment properties and the composition of intertidal diatom communities. In the experiment, disturbance negatively affected chlorophyll a concentration across all treatments. However, the response to disturbance depended on the ecological memory of the communities; the more exposed areas the communities originated from, the less negative was the effect of the mechanical disturbance. Interestingly, dispersal did not mitigate the negative impacts of disturbance in any of the communities. Our results highlight the importance of ecological memory for ecosystem functioning and demonstrate the limitations of patch connectivity to alleviate the impacts of disturbance events in metacommunities.

This study presents an evaluation of the water quality variability of 19 monitoring stations located in the channel of the Velhas river, using multivariate statistical techniques - Cluster Analysis (CA) and Principal Component Analysis/Factor Analysis (PCA/FA). Sixteen physical-chemical parameters were evaluated between January 2009 and June 2016, totalizing 27,232 valid observations. The CA grouped the nineteen monitoring stations into three groups based on the pollution levels. The PCA/FA resulted in six latent factors for group 1, four for group 2 and five for group 3, accounting for 71.44%, 65.32% and 61.69% of the total variance in the respective water quality. The factors indicated that the parameters responsible for the variations in water quality are mainly related to the release of sanitary sewage and industrial effluents and also to agriculture and livestock activities. These results reflect different water quality conditions of the Velhas River in its extension but, in fact, it is verified a greater variability of the water in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte and its downstream, justified by the different loads of pollutants received in this region, mainly the releases of domestic sewage and industrial effluents.
