Abstract Deoxyribonucleases, Disc Electrophoresis, Lymphocytes Four groups of deoxyribonuclease activities from human lymphocytes have been characterized by deoxyribonuclease assay in DNA-containing polyacrylamide gels following their separation by disc-electrophoresis. All activities hydrolyse DNA endonucleolytically. One neutral deoxyribo nuclease found in the cytoplasmic fraction prefers native or UV-irradiated DNA over denatured DNA as substrate and is a 5′-monoester former. Two groups of acid deoxyribonuclease activities are detectable in the nuclear fraction. Both are 3′-monoester formers. One is as well active with denatured DNA as with native DNA, the other one shows the same activity with native and UV-irradiated DNA but lower activity with denatured DNA. An alkaline deoxyribonuclease activity, also localized in the nucleus, is a 5′ -monoester DNA as substrate.

N , N '-Diphenylurea was shown to have reproducible cytokinin activity . Some 500 ureas, mainly of the N -monosubstituted and N , N '-disubstituted types, were tested an d about one half of these were active. Attempts were made to correlate chemical structure with biological activity. Although there are some exceptions to nearly every generalization it has been possible to formulate some principles. (1) Phenyl urea was the simplest active compound. (2) An HNCONH bridge conferred higher activity than an HNCSNH linkage and any other tested arrangement of the bridge gave inactive com pounds. (3) Compounds in which both amino hydrogen atoms on one or both sides of the bridge were substituted were of low activity or were inactive. (4) Many com pounds of the type R NHCONH 2 in which R = a substituted phenyl ring were tested. Ring substitution generally increased the activity and the highest activity was associated with meta substitution and the lowest with ortho . Compounds with electron-attracting substituents were generally more active than those with electron-donating substituents. Pyridyl compounds were active but com pounds with non-planar rings were inactive. (5) In compounds of the type R NHCONH R ' in which R and R ' were phenyl or substituted phenyl groups the highest activities were usually found in com pounds with one unsubstituted phenyl ring. Those with two substituted phenyl groups generally had lower activity. Some ureas showed detectable activity at 0.1 parts/10 6 . This was about four times less active than kinetin when tested in the tobacco pith assay.

In March 2021, Japan is facing a 4th wave of SARS-CoV-2 infection. To prevent further spread of infection, sera cross-neutralizing activity of patients previously infected with conventional SARS-CoV-2 against novel variants is important but is not firmly established. We investigated the neutralizing potency of 81 COVID-19 patients' sera from 4 waves of pandemic against SARS-CoV-2 variants using their authentic viruses. Most sera had neutralizing activity against all variants, showing similar activity against B.1.1.7 and D614G, but lower activity especially against B.1.351. In the 4th wave, sera-neutralizing activity against B.1.1.7 was significantly higher than that against any other variants, including D614G. The cross-neutralizing activity of convalescent sera was effective against all variants but was potentially weaker for B.1.351.

C14 dating of subfossil marine shelIs presupposes a knowledge of the original C14 activity of the organisms while living. Due to the slow turn over of water masses, the C14 activity of marine bicarbonate and marine organisms is not the same in all parts of the oceans, but may show marked deficiencies in certain oceanic areas, especially at southern latitudes. In large areas of the North Atlantic the C14 activity seems to be fairly uniform and equal to or only slightly lower than that of 'pre-industrial' terrestrial plants (Broecker et al., 1960; Mangerud, 1972; Krog & Tauber, 1974). In certain areas, however, a somewhat lower activity seems to occur; trus has been noted for areas along the east coast of Greenland (Fonselius & Ostlund, 1959; Hjort, 1973).

In 2010, 47 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection, including 12 laboratory-confirmed and 35 probable cases, were identified in Turkey. These were the first cases detected during routine surveillance. The patients were from 15 provinces, mainly located in the western part of the country. Incidence was 0.19/100,000 with a maximum of 1.39 in Sakarya province. Forty of the total 47 cases showed neuroinvasive manifestation. Median age was 58 years with a range of four to 86. Ten of the patients died. Enhanced surveillance in humans and animals and mosquito control measures were implemented. The WNV infections were included in the national notifiable diseases list as of April 2011. In 2011, three probable and two confirmed cases of WNV infection were diagnosed in provinces where infections had been detected in the previous year, supporting a lower activity than 2010. However, detection of WNV infections in humans in 2010 and 2011 consecutively, may indicate that WNV has become endemic in the western part of Turkey. Field epidemiological studies were undertaken to understand more about the nature of infection in Turkey.
