Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the influences of consumers’ internal-oriented psychological factors (i.e. self- promotion, need for uniqueness, self-expression and self-monitoring) and external-oriented psychological properties (i.e. social identity and other-directedness) on the perception of customization and the sense of extended-self; further to identify whether the perception of customization and the sense of extended-self lead to purchase intention toward customized apparel products. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through an online survey among college students in the USA, generating a valid sample size of 338 participants. Factor analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were utilized to test proposed hypotheses. Findings The results indicated that need for uniqueness and self-monitoring were significantly related to consumers’ perception of customization and the sense of extended-self, whereas impacts of self-expression and other-directedness were not significant. Furthermore, the results also confirmed that consumers’ perception of customization and the sense of extended-self were positively associated with purchase intention of customized apparel products. Originality/value This study investigates consumers’ psychological features that influence consumers’ buying intention of customized apparel products, which is the first attempt. The study results are insightful and beneficial for marketers to construct target consumer segmentation under different cultural and social settings.

PurposeThis study aims to focus on proposing and empirically validating a model that captures certain critical socio-psychological factors that nurture consumers' attitude towards affordable luxury brands in an emerging market context of India.Design/methodology/approachThe data were collected via a cross-sectional questionnaire survey from 491 customers of different fashion accessory luxury products in India. The data were analyzed through structural equation modelling (SEM) using AMOS 23.0 SEM software.FindingsThe findings of this study reveal that conspicuousness, status consumption, brand name consciousness, need for uniqueness and hedonism positively affect consumer attitude towards affordable luxury, which consequently affects consumers' purchase intention. The findings further reveal that age acts as a moderator in driving consumers' neo-luxury consumption.Originality/valueBy uniting various socio-psychological factors with consumer attitude and purchase intention in a conceptual model, along with studying the moderating role of age, this study responds to the calls for further research regarding affordable luxury and offers a more granular understanding of specific consumer motivations that guide Indian consumers' affordable luxury consumption.

While there have been an increasing number of researches done on branding and consumer behavior especially on brand personality, social status and vanity and its influence on purchase intention, there are little researches that focus on the influence of all these factors collectively on Apps purchase intention. This chapter conceptually argues that brand personality, social status, and physical vanity are important in building luxury fashion branded Apps. While brand personality and luxury fashion branded Apps as an internal factor plays an important role in deciphering if it has an influence on an individual's Apps purchase intention for luxury fashion brands; therefore, it is important to look into how external factors have an influence on an individual. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among luxury brand perceptions (i.e. individual value, social influence and luxury brand image), luxury brand attachment and luxury brand purchase intention. In addition, the study examines the influence of antecedents on brand attachment and purchase intention among consumers in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan (i.e. the Greater China region). Using an empirical research method, the effects of luxury perceptions on brand attachment and purchase intention are tested using the partial least squares (PLS) approach to structural equation modelling. Differences in the structural relationship among subsamples were also examined by multi-group analysis to achieve a better understanding of the characteristics of different markets, thus contributing to the marketing strategy knowledge. According to the study results, antecedents, including individual value, social influence and luxury brand image, significantly influence brand attachment and purchase intention. Furthermore, the group comparisons suggest that the three subsamples have different characteristics with respect to the structural relationship. In the China subsample, brand attachment is more likely to be influenced by social influence. In comparison, Hong Kong consumers are more rational, that is, brand attachment and purchase intention are strongly influenced by consumer’s perception of luxury brand image. Finally, the purchase intention of Taiwanese consumers mainly depends on the affection for the luxury brand.

Purpose This study aims to examine factors affecting Chinese adolescents’ purchase intention for local brands; this study focuses on the effects of perceived social status value and materialistic values. Design/methodology/approach A theoretical model relating perceived social status value of brands to purchase intention, including materialistic values as a moderator, was developed and tested, using a sample of 587 Chinese adolescent respondents. Another experimental study examined the variability of the moderation of materialistic values across different levels of peer pressure in a product usage occasion. Findings Perceived social status value associated with local and foreign brands significantly influences purchase intention for local brands. Moreover, influence of perceived social status value of local versus foreign brands on local brand purchase intention is greater for materialistic adolescents. Additionally, the moderation of materialistic values is found in a product usage occasion with high peer pressure, but not in an occasion with low peer pressure. Research limitations/implications The findings show that perceived social status value associated with brands shapes purchase intention for local brands. The moderating effect of materialistic values is complex and suggests further research. The study’s scope is limited to Chinese adolescents. Practical implications The findings provide understanding of the drivers of purchase intention, and thus serve as a guideline for Chinese firms and foreign marketers seeking to enter the growing Chinese market, as well as consumer educators in China. Originality/value This study contributes to the limited empirical research into the factors shaping country-of-origin effects. Moreover, the findings suggest the need to consider the moderating role of materialistic values on purchase intention for local brands.

On the grounds that psychological factors are increasingly used to better explain the purchase intention of customers towards electric vehicles (EVs), this study aims to examine the critical but less explored roles of resistance to change and the need for uniqueness in the purchase intention of EVs besides other conventional factors such as perceived value or personal norms. In doing so, this study would help governments and managers introduce effective measures to persuade customers to change from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to EVs. Data was collected from 175 respondents in Vietnam and PLS-SEM was utilized to analyze the theoretical model. The results illustrate that resistance to change has a significant impact on the purchase intention of EVs. In addition, perceived value has the most significant effects on willingness to pay and purchase intention of EVs. The need for uniqueness also impacts purchase intention through the willingness to pay.
