SummaryIn order to determine the prevalence of hip dysplasia (HD) from radiographs that were submitted for authorative grading, and its changes over the time in 31 breeds of dogs in France, a 14-year retrospective study was conducted. Significant differences were observed between breeds, with HD prevalence ranging from 59.7% (Cane Corso) to 3.9% (Siberian Husky). When comparing the 1993–1999 with the 2000–2006 period in 15 breeds, a significant decrease in HD prevalence was detected in Berger Picard, Bernese Mountain dog, Briard, Gordon Setter, White Swiss Sheepdog and Rottweiler. Modifications observed in the other breeds were not statistically significant.

PurposeTo describe the clinical and molecular spectrum of Stargardt disease (STGD) in a cohort of Argentinean patients.MethodsThis retrospective study included 132 subjects comprising 95 probands clinically diagnosed with STGD and relatives from 16 of them. Targeted next-generation sequencing of the coding and splicing regions of ABCA4 and other phenocopying genes (ELOVL4, PROM1, and CNGB3) was performed in 97 STGD patients.ResultsWe found two or more disease-causing variants in the ABCA4 gene in 69/95 (73%) probands, a single ABCA4 variant in 9/95 (9.5%) probands, and no ABCA4 variants in 17/95 (18%) probands. The final analysis identified 173 variants in ABCA4. Seventy-nine ABCA4 variants were unique, of which nine were novel. No significant findings were seen in the other evaluated genes.ConclusionThis study describes the phenotypic and genetic features of STGD1 in an Argentinean cohort. The mutations p.(Gly1961Glu) and p.(Arg1129Leu) were the most frequent, representing almost 20% of the mutated alleles. We also expanded the ABCA4 mutational spectrum with nine novel disease-causing variants, of which eight might be associated with South American natives.

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate whether intraocular (IOP) elevation post-cataract surgery can be reduced by using tropicamide and phenylephrine only, without cyclopentolate. Medical records across two surgical facilities were analyzed. One surgical facility (Cohort A) used a combination of tropicamide, cyclopentolate, and phenylephrine preoperatively, while the other (Cohort B) used tropicamide and phenylephrine only. Of patients in Cohort A, 63.6% (n = 7) had a higher IOP in the operated eye, while it was only 27.3% (n = 3) in Cohort B. Therefore, it is preferable to exclude the use of cyclopentolate in the preoperative dilation regimen of patients undergoing cataract surgery. However, a study with a larger sample population is required to further evaluate the significance of these results.

Vancomycin is an antibiotic glycopeptide that was isolated of the Streptomyces orientalis. It was introduced in the clinical practice for treatment of infections caused by staphylococcus in which other antibiotics were proving to be ineffective. In this retrospective study, we determine its prescription, clinical characteristics as well as the factors that favor the apparition of the erythroderma or red-man syndrome in a paediatric hospital. Forty patients to which physicians administer vancomycin and presented erythroderma were evaluated. Male gender was more predominated, with a total of 25 cases (62.5 %). The average age was of 12 ± 6 years. We identified two main factors that are directly related to the appearance of erythroderma. On one hand, the "concentration of the drug", which is related to the dilution that it is realized when a dose of vancomycin is going to be administered to the patient and on the other hand the “time or speed of infusion”. In the present study, it was found a low incident of this adverse reaction and few cases of complications.

Objective: The association between clubfoot and developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) remains uncertain, with only a few studies linking both. However, clubfoot is considered as a risk factor for DDH. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of DDH and evaluate the need for routine hip imaging in our population of children with clubfoot. Methods: Retrospective analysis of all patients treated for clubfoot in our center between 2010 and 2019. We included patients with hip imaging for DDH in the first 12 months of life. Results: There were 108 children with clubfoot who underwent DDH screening. 92 had idiopathic clubfoot and 16 had syndromic clubfoot. Of the patients with idiopathic clubfoot, 2 (2.2%) had DDH; one had a clinically unstable hip and the other patient underwent hip screening on account of the clubfoot alone. Among patients with syndromic clubfoot, 3 (18.8%) had developmental dysplasia of the hip. Two of them had an abnormal hip examination while the other had normal hip clinical examination but other established risk factors for DDH. Conclusion: A targeted ultrasound or radiological screening programme for DDH in idiopathic clubfoot diagnosed hip dysplasia in only 1 child that would have otherwise been missed by clinical examination alone. We conclude that hip imaging is not warranted in children with idiopathic clubfoot and regular clinical screening may suffice. In syndromic clubfoot, due to the higher incidence of DDH, we recommend specific ultrasound screening even in the presence of a normal hip examination. Keywords: Clubfoot, Screening, Developmental dysplasia of the hip.

A five year survey established interstitial pneumonitis to be the major cause of sudden and unexpected death under the age of 40. A total of 255 cases was reviewed. There was prevalence in infants under the age of 12 months and in the males of the other age groups. 79.9 per cent of cases died in their sleep and 38.8 per cent had preceding ‘flu’-like symptoms. Chronic heart or lung diseases were present in 7.8 per cent of cases. The influenza group of viruses is suggested to be the aetiological agent and further studies are being planned.

SummaryAim: The effectiveness of radioiodine therapy (RIT) is proven. The aim of this study was to determine, how much time passes between diagnosis of thyroid autonomy or occurrence of functional and/or local symptoms on one hand and RIT on the other hand. Patients, methods: This retrospective study comprises 196 patients, who were treated with radioiodine for thyroid autonomy between 2002 and 2005. Evaluated parameters are begin of functional and/ or local symptoms, first scintigraphy with relevant Tc-Uptake as time point of primary diagnosis of thyroid autonomy and time point of implementation of RIT. Results: Between first scintigraphy with relevant Tc-Uptake and implementation of RIT 0–72 months passed (median: 3 months). 160 patients (81.6%) had a prior diagnosis of goitre by their general practitioner and 163 patients (83.3%) had a prior diagnosis of TSH suppression. The time period between first recommendation of RIT and implementation of RIT was 0–89 months (median: 2 months). In 142 patients (71.4%) functional and/or local symptoms were present over 73 months (median; range: 0–180 months) before the first scintigraphy with therapy relevant Tc-Uptake was conducted. Conclusion: Despite clear recommendations in corresponding guidelines too much time passes between first symptoms (median: 73 months), primary diagnosis of therapy relevant thyroid autonomy (median: 2 months) and implementation of RIT. Patients with functional and/or local symptoms should be examined for thyroid autonomy early. If thyroid autonomy is proven, RIT should be planned immediately, especially in high-risk patients.

SummaryThe prevalence of rotation of the pelvis along its length axis was noted, as was the number of rotations towards the right or left hand side of the dog, on 7,012 conventional hip extended radiographs, which were sent for official screening. 29.8% of the radiographs showed a rotation the pelvis. The rotation was statistically more frequent towards the left hand side of the dog. The number of rejected radiographs for too important pelvis rotation was only 5.2%. The consequences of the pelvis rotation on the Norberg-Olsson angle, on the dorsal femoral head coverage, and in the aspect of cranial acetabular edge have to be taken into account when scoring the dog for hip dysplasia.

1 A retrospective study (extending over 10 years, 1980 to 1989 inclusively) of hospital admission cases, due to therapeutic drug poisoning was carried out at the six main hospitals of Zimbabwe's four cities. 2 The four cities have a total population of approximately 4 million. 3 A total of 1061 cases were recorded and analysed. This constituted 16.7% of all poisoning admission cases (i.e. the fourth biggest cause of poisoning after traditional medicines, household chemicals and snake/insect venom). 4 Of the 1061 cases, 31 % were aged 21-30 years, 21.9% were aged 11-20 years, 14.9% were aged under 5 years and 12.8% were aged 31-40 years. Those aged over 80 years accounted for only 0.6% of the cases. 5 The major groups of drugs implicated were: the analgesics, 22% of the total; sedatives and hypnotics, 13.2%; antipsychotics, 11.6%; antimalarials, 9.3%; antidepressants, 9.0%; antimicrobials, 7.5%; and alcohol, 7.1 %. The other drugs each accounted for the less than 7%; the least used group were the gastrointestinal drugs which formed only 0.6% of the total. Poisoning due to drug abuse was cited at 1.3%. Overdose, either accidental or in the course of treatment, accounted for 63.5% of the cases. 6 The mortality rate was 3.9% and most of the deaths were suicides. 7 Treatment consisted mainly of the administration of ipecacuanha in those under 5 years old age and supportive therapy in adults. A few cases were given an antidote if it was specifically indicated.
