Wheel Chairs are one of the convenient man made structure which are highly useful for person with disability. The major problem of this wheelchair is the architectural obstacles such as stairs etc. Many researchers around the globe have worked on wheel chair design so as to make the user independent. The question of overcoming these obstacles by a wheelchair always is the most discussed topics in recent days. This paper involves in fabricating a wheel chair which is motor operated. It is stair climbing wheelchair design which concept which overcomes the structural obstacles. The fabrication of an ergonomically designed battery operated wheel chair for multi usage is done.  Concept of stairs climbing function is embedded in the design by adopting new design and mechanism. The design considerations of the wheelchair are based on the standard design of the stairs which are constructed in India. The work deals with design and fabrication of wheelchair convertible to bed. It is also equipped with a standing aid which helps the disabled individual to stand up and perform certain work. The design involves the  use of electrical linear actuators which consists of an assembly of motor driven power screw to make the transformation from sitting to a bed by using a hand held remote, overcoming the need of a another person to shift the patient from wheelchair to bed. This project offers multiple features over a standard wheelchair and is very economical in comparison to commercially available wheelchairs.

Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are simple in structure, easy to manufacture, magnet-less, brushless, and highly robust compared to other AC motors which makes them a good option for applications that operate in harsh environment. However, the motor has non-linear magnetic characteristics, and it comes with various pole-phase combinations and circuit topologies that causes many difficulties in deciding on which type to choose. In this paper, the viability of SRM as a low-cost, rugged machine for vehicle radiator cooling fan is considered. First, necessary design considerations are presented, then three commonly use types of SRM are analyzed: A 3-phase 6/4, 3-phase 12/8, and a 4-phase 8/6 to find their static and dynamic characteristics so the most suitable type can be selected. Simulation results show that the 8/6 SRM produces the highest efficiency with less phase current which reduces the converter burden. However, with asymmetric half bridge converter, eight power switches are required for 8/6 SRM and thus put a burden on the overall drive cost. As a solution, the Miller converter with only six switches for four phase SRM. To verify the proposed idea, the 8/6 SRM was manufactured and tested. The results show that Miller converter can be used for the proposed SRM with slightly reduced efficiency at 80.4%.

The paper describes selection and justification of metrobus route in Kyiv. Object of the study - Kyiv transport system. Purpose of the study - selection and justification of metrobus route in Kyiv. Method of the study - statistical analysis, synthesis, formalization and generalization. Metrobus is a promising public transport system in cities, because it has low cost and high speed of construction of line compared to rail transport, high speed of movement in dedicated lanes, ability to flexibly change the passenger flow due to changes in bus traffic, ability to partially use metrobus lane for other special vehicles, low-cost travel due to high passenger capacity and efficient payment systems, reduction of air pollution, and its absence when using electric buses. Analyzed the current state of public transport in Kyiv. It was found that the most acute problem with transport is in the residential area Vyhurivshchyna-Troieshchyna. Driving time in rush hours from Pochayna metro station in the direction of Vygurovshchina-Troeshchina is increases by 10-27 min. compared to nighttime hours, when traffic is low, and the accidents or road works can further increase it. Metrobus route Miloslavska St. - Pochayna metro station was proposed. The route has a total length of 11.1 km and has 13 stops. Average distance between stops is 854 m and fits into the generally accepted norms used in construction of metrobus lines (800-1200 m). This will solve transport problem on this route and reduce average driving time to 18.5 minutes only using dedicated lanes. The results of the article can be used to design metrobus line and to determine of vehicles performance properties that will be used on them. This paper presents developing Alber principle for machine supporting wheelchair in climbing stairs. The designed machine can support wheelchair and disabled people with total weight 80 kg climb up and down most of stairs and with speed 10-15 stairs per minute. Moving wheelchair and disabled people need assistant person who will hold handle and control the machine. The machine is designed with a simple structure, manufactured with low cost and simple controlling. Therefore the machine can be upgraded and manufactured in future.

Two commercial swab transport systems, Copan Amies gel agar with and without charcoal (Copan Diagnostics, Corona, Calif.), were compared to direct inoculation onto modified Thayer-Martin medium for detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in 1,490 endocervical specimens obtained from women attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic. Copan swabs were held in the transport system for 24 h at room temperature prior to inoculation onto modified Thayer-Martin medium. All cultures were incubated at 35°C in 5% CO2, and bacteria were identified on the basis of Gram stain, oxidase, and biochemical reactions. Copan Amies gel agar transport system without charcoal detected 77 of 81 (95%) direct inoculation culture-positive specimens, and Copan Amies gel agar transport system with charcoal detected 53 of 56 (95%) directly inoculated culture-positive specimens. Copan Amies gel agar without charcoal inoculated after 6 h supported growth of 56 (98%) positive cultures out of only 55 directly inoculated culture-positive specimens. This study demonstrates that Copan swabs represent a reasonable alternative, providing convenience, low cost, and ease of use while still maintaining a satisfactory recovery rate of N. gonorrhoeae from clinical specimens, if specimens can be inoculated onto selective media within a relatively short time period not involving overnight shipment.

Intelligent product manuals are designed to allow product users to utilize a product as easily, effectively and with as little additional care as possible while minimizing support costs for manufacturers and suppliers. It is first shown how intelligent product manuals address these objectives by utilizing electronic, multimedia and knowledge-based technologies to provide active assistance to the user of the product during tasks such as installation, operation and maintenance. An architecture for the creation and deployment of an intelligent product manual is then proposed and general design considerations are outlined. Finally, four implementation approaches, based on XML, SGML, HTML and PDF technologies, are compared against a set of selection criteria. It is concluded that simple, low-cost solutions are available, which can provide significant benefits for appropriate businesses, including smaller companies.

Abstract This paper presents a review of two years experience regarding senior design projects to aid persons with disabilities, for mechanical engineering students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The efforts are funded by the National Science Foundation and are aimed at developing alternative, low cost, custom devices to aid specific disabled individuals or targeted groups. A collaboration has been established with UAB Occupational Therapy and United Cerebral Palsy of Birmingham (UCP), who have provided projects which combine depth in both engineering and life sciences. The “UAB experience” described in the following includes project selection, development, student advising and overall significance. Completed designs are listed, along with efforts to bring the products to a marketable level.
