In contrast to the conventional forced wave generator which consists of cam and flexible bearing in harmonic drive, the novel forced wave generator retains cam but cancels flexible bearing. In this article, the lubrication characteristics of the novel forced wave generator in harmonic drive is studied. First, an elliptical sliding bearing (ESB) model of simplified structure between the novel forced wave generator and the flex spline is established. Further, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is employed to study the effect of some factors on the lubrication characteristics of the ESB model including elliptical gap ratio, width, and rotational speed. According to the analysis, the elliptical gap ratio has a great impact and its optimal value is 3, which is used in the design of the novel forced wave generator. Last, the practical design of the novel forced wave generator in harmonic drive is given, which can provide a basis for design and optimization of a forced wave generator without flexible bearing of the harmonic drive.

The transport of entropy waves and their impact on the stage aerodynamics are still open questions. This paper shows the results of an experimental campaign that focuses on the swirling entropy waves advection through an axial turbine stator. The research aims at quantifying the aerodynamic impact of the swirling entropy waves on the first nozzle and characterizing their transport. The disturbance is generated by a novel entropy wave generator that ensures a wide set of different injection parameters. The device injects the disturbance axially, four different clocking positions are investigated. Measurements show a severe temperature attenuation of the swirling entropy wave at stator outlet. The high temperature location changes with the injection position as a result of the different interaction with the stator secondary flows. Depending on the injection position, the aerodynamic flow field is strongly perturbed by the injected swirl profile, instead the entropy wave effect is negligible.

AbstractDeformation of the flexspline is the basis of analyzing tooth trajectory and designing tooth profile. Considering the tooth influence on the position of equivalent neutral layer, a piecewise method for calculating the deformation of flexspline assembled with a cam wave generator is presented in this paper. Firstly, a mechanic model of a ring of uniform thickness in contact with a rigid cam is established. The displacements of the ring inside and outside an unknown wrapping angle are determined by the geometric constraints of the cam profile and the equilibrium relationship, respectively. Meanwhile, the wrapping angle is solved according to the boundary conditions. The assembly forces are derived to investigate the circumferential elongation and strain. Then, considering the tooth effects on the neutral layer of flexspline, the tooth is positioned on the equivalent neutral layer, which is the non-elongation layer within one gear pitch but offset from the geometric mid-layer. The equivalent neutral layer is positioned by the empirical formula of the offset ratio, which is summarized by the orthogonal simulation on finite element models of racks. Finally, finite element models of a ring-shaped and a cup-shaped flexspline assembled with elliptical cam are established to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the piecewise method. The results show that, compared with the geometric method, the tooth positioning deviation calculated by the piecewise method can be reduced by about 70% with a more accurate deformation description from the geometric condition and mechanic condition inside and outside the wrapping angle.

The aim of the study was to determine the parameters of a detonator generating a self-centring detonation wave, based on experimental and theoretical analysis. The methods for manufacturing selfcentring detonation wave generators available in literature were reviewed and a detonator comprised of two explosives was proposed. The detonator geometry was analysed for its ability to centre the detonation wave. A physical detonator model was created and the detonation wave front downstream of the detonator, analysed and the detonator’s capability to compensate an off-centre detonation initiation, evaluated. The wave fronts were recorded using pulsed x-ray radiography. The study showed that the proposed detonator provides a symmetrical initiation of the main charge for the initiation point (location) offset, lower than the assumed maximum offset.

The deformation shape and mechanical property of flex-gear greatly affect the meshing accuracy and service life of harmonic drive, and the stress wave generator plays a decisive role in the deformation shape and mechanical properties of the flexible gear. The investigation on deformation of the flex-gear around the major axis is developed with comparative analysis with three kinds of traditional and commonly used wave generators. Based on the influence of the deformation around the major axis on meshing accuracy and service life, the eccentric arc cam wave generator improved by transition curve for controlling the deformation shape and reducing the deformation stress is developed. Considering the achievable flexibility of spiral with smooth curvature change rate, the contour of the compound curve cam wave generator with arc and spiral is proposed. The deformation of the flex-gear under the influence of this compound curve cam and the standard elliptic cam is further comparative analyzed. The conclusion shows that this compound curve cam can indeed reduce the deformation stress in the meshing area by increasing the meshing width, and correct deformation shape can also be gained by shape control on the whole circumference of the flex-gear’s neutral layer.

The aim of the presented study was to perform a global sensitivity analysis of various design parameters affecting the lost motion of the harmonic drive. A detailed virtual model of a harmonic drive was developed, including the wave generator, the flexible ball bearing, the flexible spline and the circular spline. Finite element analyses were performed to observe which parameter from the harmonic drive geometry parameter group affects the lost motion value most. The analyses were carried out using 4% of the rated harmonic drive output torque by the locked wave generator and fixed circular spline according the requirements for the high accuracy harmonic drive units. The described approach was applied to two harmonic drive units with the same ratio, but various dimensions and rated power were used to generalize and interpret the global sensitivity analysis results properly. The most important variable was for both harmonic drives the offset from the nominal tooth shape.
