In the industrial sector, it is important that companies have a high profitability, with strategies for the provision of services or product development that meet or exceed the demands of the market, this is called competitiveness. Maintaining a holistic approach within organizations requires the analysis and measurement of context variables, as well as the implementation of a culture of quality and continuous improvement. In the oil industry, well pipeline maintenance services are activities of the utmost importance to keep the energy sector productive, therefore it is important that companies engaged in this area be competitive. This study analyzes the impact of context variables on the competitiveness of companies that provide maintenance services to oil well pipelines, seeking that in a comprehensive manner and on the basis of the results obtained, determine the relationship they have with respect to their competitiveness, to propose improvement strategies that lead companies to evolve towards states of improvement with levels of competitiveness that allow them to position themselves at world-class levels.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the intention of companies to reduce transportation emissions by 2020 and the barriers and the discriminating factors that affect the reduction. Design/methodology/approach – A literature review identified potential logistical and technical actions and their barriers, and discriminating factors for reducing transportation emissions. A survey of freight transport-intensive industries in Sweden examined the effects of, intention for implementation of and barriers to 12 actions to reduce CO2 emissions from freight transportation. In total, 172 logistics managers responded, representing a response rate of 40.3 per cent. Findings – Logistics service providers (LSPs) and freight owners are likely to reduce a considerable amount of CO2 emissions from freight transportation by 2020 using a combination of actions. The lowest level of confidence was for reducing CO2 emissions by changing logistics structures, while there was greater confidence by means of operational changes. The actions have few barriers, but there is often a combination of barriers to overcome. Three discriminating factors influence the intention of a firm to reduce transportation emissions: perceived potential, company size and LSP/freight owner. The industrial sector of a freight owner has minor influence. Companies that are particularly likely to reduce emissions are LSPs, large companies, and those that perceive a large reduction potential. Research limitations/implications – Logistical and technical barriers appear to hinder companies from implementing actions, while organisational barriers and external prerequisites do not. Barriers cannot be used to predict companies’ intentions to reduce transportation emissions. The authors examined the impact of three discriminating factors on reduction of transportation emissions. The research is based on perceptions of well-informed managers and on companies in Sweden. Practical implications – The findings can be used by managers to identify firms for benchmarking initiatives and emissions-reducing strategies. Originality/value – The study provides insights into intended CO2 reductions in transportation by 2020. It presents new knowledge regarding barriers and discriminating factors for implementing actions to reduce transportation emissions.

Demographic change is an uneven spatial process in Germany. Depopulation and ageing have become pressing issues in most rural regions. In connection with low population densities and the financial difficulties of municipalities and service providers in rural regions, these demographic trends have led to a discussion about the future provision of services of general interest and – more broadly – the postulate of equal living conditions which was for a long time the basic principle of spatial development in Germany. In this paper, we argue that the peripheralisation approach is a helpful tool to better understand how interaction of out-migration, dependence, disconnection and stigmatisation shape the future of rural regions. We also discuss the impact of peripheralisation on the development and implementation of adaptation strategies. Based on the 3R-model (retrenchment, repositioning, reorganisation), we argue that adaptation strategies can reinforce (retrenchment) peripheralisation processes, but also serve as groundwork for the formulation of policies aiming at de-peripheralisation.

Memory disorders have become a major public, social, and health concern among the aging population, and many of those who are affected are cared for at home by their spouse. The aim of this qualitative study was to describe the individual experiences of 10 older caregivers who were looking after a spouse with a memory disorder in 2016. Data were collected from volunteers who were recruited from a memory clinic at a Finnish health center using the thematic interview method and processed using inductive content analysis. The participants were six female and four male caregivers who had been married for over 10 years. The results indicated that caring for a spouse with a memory disorder involved a number of factors. These included the impact of social networks and changes in their everyday life, collaboration with service providers, and the caregivers’ well-being. However, our study showed that caregivers felt that the formal multiprofessional services they received were fragmented, which means that they were less likely to provide a holistic approach to caregivers’ situations. Better multiprofessional cooperation is needed in the community, including services such as memory clinics, home care and practical services, day centers, and short-term respite in care homes.

First Nations children face systemic barriers in their access to health, education, and social services ordinarily available to other Canadian children. This article summarizes the findings of a research project initiated by, and carried out in partnership with, Pinaymootang First Nation, Manitoba between 2015 and 2017. Through this partnership, we were able to document the routine delays, denials, and disruptions of services that Pinaymootang children with special healthcare needs experienced. We further described the impact that this discrimination had on children and their caregivers. Here, we consider three specific service areas: medical services (primary and specialized), allied health services (e.g., language therapy), and additional care services (e.g., medication). Our findings are drawn from formal and informal interviews with Indigenous, provincial, and federal service providers; Indigenous leadership; and caregivers of Pinaymootang children with special healthcare needs. Based on this information, we argue that discrimination is pervasive, rooted in Canada’s colonial history, and actualized through three main instruments: administration of policies regulating the provision of services to First Nations populations living on reserve, chronic underfunding of services targeting this population, and geographic isolation (i.e., distance from a service hub). The article concludes with nine recommendations prepared by the project’s advisory committee for future policy aiming to eliminate the discrimination First Nations children with special healthcare needs experience by way of fully (and meaningfully) implementing Jordan’s Principle in Canada.

Objective: This study aims to understand the impact of technological innovations in Industry 4.0 in the provision of services in the construction sector. Project / methodology / approach: Documental qualitative approach research gathering data from reports related to the civil construction segment (CBIC, 2016a, 2016b, 2018; SEBRAE, 2020; KPMG, 2016; WEF, 2016). The research followed in six steps: formulate the problem, establish a conceptual plan, conduct the research, collect the information, analyze and undertake a general assessment (Létourneau, 2011; Silveira Gontijo Motta Alves, 2019). Findings: The knowledge circulating among professional service providers in the Civil Construction sector tends to be subjectively built from the practice of the sector operator. Craftsmanship still dominates civil construction processes, however, the industrialization of the sector through machined concrete, the use of machines and automation can make technological transformation feasible. Limitations / implications of research: The access to documents or even their availability is a challenge for the dimensioning of the phenomenon of Industry 4.0 in Civil Construction. Public access publications were sought, however, an overview of the state of the art in terms of digitalization in construction processes was possible. Originality/Value: The technological phenomena addressed in this article are part of a context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that through Industry 4.0 (Madsen, 2019; Santos et al. 2019). In Civil Construction this digital transformation through automation and digitalization of processes the phenomenon of Industry 4.0 manifests itself as Construction 4.0 (Craveiro et al., 2019).

Prolonged and repetitive COVID-19 facility closures have led to an abrupt cessation of visitors within UK and Irish zoos for variable periods since March 2020. This study sought to increase understanding of the impact of closures and reopenings on animal behaviour, thereby broadening understanding of whether zoo animals habituate to visitors. Data were collected from June to August 2020 at two UK facilities on eight species (n = 1 Chinese goral, n = 2 Grevy’s zebra, n = 11 swamp wallaby, n = 2 Rothschild’s giraffe, n = 2 nyala, n = 4 Chapman’s zebra, n = 2 snow leopard and n = 3 Amur leopard). Behaviour change and enclosure use was variable across species but most changes were non-significant. Grevy’s zebra engaged in more comfort behaviour during closure periods than post-closure (p < 0.05). Chinese goral engaged in more environmental interactions during closure periods (p < 0.05). Grevy’s zebra spent longer than would be expected by chance closest to public viewing areas during closure periods (p < 0.008). These results suggest variable impacts of covid-19 closures and reopenings, mirroring human-animal interaction literature. We highlight the potential for some species to take longer to re-habituate to the presence of zoo visitors. As facility closures/reopenings are ongoing, we advocate a longitudinal monitoring approach. Furthermore, we recommend incorporation of physical and physiological measures of welfare where possible, alongside behavioural responses, to enable a holistic approach to answering fundamental questions on whether zoo animals habituate to visitors.

In recent years, short-term rental platforms in the lodging sector, including Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway, have received extensive attention and emerged as potentially alternative suppliers of services traditionally provided by established commercial accommodation providers, that is, hotels. Short-term rentals have dramatically increased the available supply of rooms for visitors to multiple international destinations, potentially siphoning demand away from hotels to short-term rental businesses. In a competitive market, an increase in supply with constant demand would negatively influence incumbent service providers. In this article, we examine the substitution effects of short-term rental supply on hotel performance in different cities around the world. Specifically, we comprehensively investigate the substitution effects of short-term rental supply on hotel performance based on hotel class, location type, and region. Furthermore, we segment the short-term rental supply based on its types of accommodations, that is, shared rooms, private rooms, and entire homes, and both examine and quantify the differential effects of these types of short-term rentals on different types of hotels. This study offers a comprehensive analysis regarding the impact of multiple short-term rental platforms on hotel performance and offers both conceptual and practical insights regarding the nature and extent of the effects that were identified.
