Rice farmers do not recognize the negative impacts of overusing agricultural chemicals in farming activities on the environment. Hence, this study aimed to estimate technical and environmental efficiency for the rice producers in Tra Vinh province of Vietnam using the translog stochastic production frontier approach. Nutrients of NPK and pesticide cost were assumed to be environmentally detrimental inputs for environmental efficiency estimation. Empirical results indicated that the mean technical efficiency score was 0.74 showing technical inefficiency in the sample farms. The average environmental efficiency indexes were 0.55 for two detrimental inputs, 0.51 for nutrients of NPK, and only 0.10 for pesticide alone, indicating that the rice farms have huge potential to decrease the use of these inputs. The reduction in fertilizer, especially pesticide use, will help the rice farmers achieve higher profitability and be more sustainable. Regarding determinants of farms’ efficiencies, the regression analysis revealed that participating in agricultural cooperatives has emerged to be a favorable factor associated with technical and environmental efficiency, suggesting that the development of agricultural cooperative models should be prioritized to promote and encourage farmers’ participation. The present study results could be seen as key points for farmers' adjustment in rice production, leading to a safer environment and a driving force in the sustainable agriculture development in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam.

Abstract. Le TL, Luu TTH, Huynh N, Chung RH. 2020. Environmental efficiency of rice production in Vietnam: An application of SBM-DEA with undesirable output. Biodiversitas 21: 2710-2715. In Vietnam, the agricultural sector is one of major sources of the country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and over half of that comes from rice cultivation. This study evaluates the environmental efficiency of 400 rice farms in the Mekong Delta using slack-based measure (SBM) data envelopment analysis (DEA) with considering the total amount of CO2-equivalent (CO2-eq) emissions in the rice field as undesirable output. The findings revealed that the average environmental efficiency score of the farmers was very low, just only 0.461. Only 2.25% of the sample farms were environmentally efficient while majority of them (58%) obtained the efficiency values less than the mean indicating that their environmental efficiency needs to be further improved. The small rice farms were higher in environmental efficiency scores compared with large farms. The sample rice farmers who are members of agricultural cooperatives obtained a significantly higher environmental efficiency than the non-cooperative members. The estimated results of input and bad output excesses showed that about 1.35 tons of CO2-eq ha-1 could be reduced and an average of 54.18 kg N ha-1 could be saved in order to improve the environmental performance of rice production in the study area.

This study aims to analyze the economic benefits, income of rice farming, allocation of credit usage and analyze the factors affecting the chances of the smoothness rate of return at Seandanan Agricultural Cooperatives. The research is conducted at Seandanan Agricultural Cooperative in Pesawaran Regency, Lampung Province, which is determined intentionally.  The research data were taken in July 2019.  This study uses a case study method.  Respondents in this study are 70 rice farmers member of Seandanan Agricultural Cooperative. The data analysis method use descriptive qualitative and quantitative analyses. The results showed that the economic benefits received by members of cooperative in one year is IDR1,711,312.47 and in high category. The average income of rice farming received by members of the Seandanan Agricultural Cooperative in one year has been classified as high, in the amount over cash costs and over total costs, respectively, of IDR17,308,552.78 and IDR16,416,268.56.  Allocation of credit of cooperative membersconsistd of 58.85% for productive activities and the rest, 41.15% for consumptive activities.  Factors that affect the chances of the smoothness rate of credit return by rice farmers members of Seandanan Agricultural Cooperative are the education level of farmers and the allocation of productive credit usage.Key words: agricultural cooperatives, consumptive, credit, and productive

The chapter aims to evaluate the profit loss of rice farmers due to salinity intrusion by collecting the information of rice production in three regions with the same natural environment conditions, social characteristics (e.g., the same social and farming culture, ethnicity, type of soil), and only differed with respect to the level of salinity in Soc Trang province, one of the most salinity-affected areas in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The study estimated the profit loss in rice production due to saltwater intrusion by the difference in rice profit between the non-salinity and salinity regions and showed this loss was about VND 9.3-15.1 million per ha-1 a year.

Abstract This study examined land tenure systems and rice productivity in Nigeria. Primary data were used for the study. Data were collected with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire. A four-stage sampling technique was used to select a total sample size of three hundred and forty-nine (349) rice farmers based on the number of questionnaires correctly filled and returned from the selected sampled size. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, total factor productivity, and Stochastic production frontier model. The study revealed that large portion of the land (over 94%) used for rice production were acquired through inheritance mode of land acquisition and communal type of land tenure system widely practiced. The result of total factor productivity indicated that 62.18% of the rice farmers were at sub-optimal productivity level. The results of the stochastic production frontier function revealed that seed (P< 0.10), and fertilizer application (P<0.01) were the significant factors influencing technical efficiency of rice production in the study area. Based on the findings, the study recommend that current land use act and policy should be amended to prevent concurrent grabbing of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes in order to enhance availability and accessibility of land for agriculture.

This study of rice production in Thoai Son district of An Giang province points out that the characteristics of rice farmers’ market-oriented production are constantly expanding areas of production; getting loans to invest on intensive production; applying advanced technologymechanization; and participating or not participating in agricultural value chain. Underlying these characteristics is the choice making of farmer households which are determined by their interests. In the present context of rice producing when rice farmers’ economic behaviors result from the interaction of their rational calculation and the market structure, farmers’ interests contradict with those of state models or designs for rice production development, it is true that farmers’ rationality at household levels can be seen as an obsable to the efforts of establishing a big and modern rice industry.

The formation of agricultural cooperatives has been widely promoted as an agricultural development policy initiative to help smallholder farmers cope with multiple production and marketing challenges. Using a nationally representative survey dataset of smallholder maize producers from rural Nigeria, this study assesses the impact of agricultural cooperative membership on technical efficiency (TE). We based our estimation approach on the combination of a newly developed sample selection stochastic production frontier model with propensity score matching to control for possible selectivity biases from both observables and unobservables. We estimate stochastic meta-frontiers to examine TE differences between cooperative members and non-members. Our results reveal that TE levels of members are consistently higher than that of non-members. This calls for continued policy incentives targeted at encouraging farmers to form as well as participate in agricultural cooperatives.

The impact of agricultural cooperatives on apple farmers’ technical efficiency (TE) in China was examined. The cooperatives were divided into two groups: a collective marketing group for farmers and an equivalent non-marketing group that did not provide a marketing service, although other functions remained the same. Using the propensity score matching (PSM) procedure and stochastic production frontier (SPF) modelling, cooperatives’ key functions that potentially increase farmers’ TE can be identified. The results indicate that membership of either group is positively related to yield. However, cooperatives that were not engaged in marketing achieved higher TE than non-members. This suggests that policy makers should encourage cooperatives to focus on activities that do not include direct marketing to increase TE in apple production in China.

The intensive use of chemicals worked as a catalyst to shift the production frontier but the most critical factor of maintaining a clean environment was totally ignored. The present study attempts to estimate the environmental efficiency of rice production by employing the translog stochastic production frontier approach. The data are collected from five major Basmati rice growing districts (Gujranwala, Sheikupura, Sialkot, Hafizabad, and Jhang) of Punjab in 2006. Chemical weedicides and nitrogen are treated as environmentally detrimental inputs. The mean technical efficiency index is sufficiently high (89 percent) but the environmental efficiency index of chemical weedicides alone is 14 percent while the joint environmental efficiency index of chemical weedicides and nitrogen is 24 percent implying that joint environmental efficiency is higher than chemical weedicide alone. It indicates that substantial reduction (86 percent) in chemical weedicide use is possible with higher level of productivity. Moreover, it is likely to contribute a considerable decrease in environmental pollution which is expected to enhance the performance of agriculture labour. The reduction in chemical weedicides will save Rs 297 per acre and Rs 1307.3 million over all from the rice crop in Punjab, improving the profitability of rice growing farmers by the same proportion. Empirical analysis indicates that reduction in environmental pollution together with higher level of profitability in rice production is achievable.
