The Author examines the presentation of the German occupation at the Warsaw Rising Museum and in Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory in Krakow. Initially, she studies the space of these exhibitions and demonstrates that the Warsaw Rising Museum has some characteristics of reflective space, while the exhibition at the Schindler’s Factory is primarily a projective one. Then, she points out that both museums treat artefacts as illustrations of their stories, as a consequence of which they are simulations of the past rather than material testimonies of what had happened. Finally, the Author argues that the Warsaw Rising Museum primarily tells the story of glory of the Polish nation, while the Schindler Factory focuses on the social history. In conclusion the Author points out that none of the exhibitions breaks the existing taboos or offers a new approach to the past. Both museum stories perfectly reflect the shape of the Polish social memory of World War II. Differences in the way they present the past are a result of rooting each of the stories in different public debates that were conducted in Poland after 1989.

I began studying Soviet photography in the early 2000s. To be more specific, I began studying Soviet photographers, most of whom had “Jewish” written on their internal passports, as I sought to understand how it was possible that a large number of photographers creating images of World War II were members of an ethnic group that was soon to be persecuted by the highest levels of the state. I ended up uncovering the social history of Soviet Jews and their relationship to photography, as I also explored how their training in the 1920s and 1930s shaped the photographs they took during World War II.

In this chapter, the phenomenon of peace in the social studies curriculum is examined in the context of Turkey and Greece. The formation of the social studies curriculum and conceptual changes in programs in Turkey related with Greece is investigated. The studies that have been initiated after World Wars to prevail the perception of peace in Social Studies and History lessons are reviewed. The current status of the curriculum shows an attempt put forward by examining historically the studies initiated by UNESCO after World War II in order to eliminate the phenomenon of hostility in the textbooks which also include Turkey and Greece. Due to the nature of the study described in this chapter, the method of scanning was used. As a result of the study, it has been observed that the phenomenon of peace hasn't been given enough space, but there have been obvious positive regulations than those in the past. In this context, a continuation of the studies related with the phenomenon of peace which are included in the curriculum is suggested.

This chapter analyzes three reenactments by the Slovenian director Janez Janša, two reconstructions of experimental performances made under communism in Ljubljana during the late 1960s and early 1970s by poets and performers associated with the Pupilija group, and one which subversively reappropriates canonical contemporary dance works from the United States, Germany, and Japan. The two earlier works, it argues, interrogate the utopian ideals espoused by the communist partisans who freed Yugoslavia from German occupation during World War II. It develops a framework for this analysis by drawing on Walter Benjamin’s discussion of the philosophy of history and on Michel de Certeau’s work on memory and the everyday. It places the three reconstructions in their social, historical, and political context and evaluates their meanings in relation to misperceptions about art in post-communist countries.

The German Occupation of Paris in 1940 affected meanings and understandings of the act of photography itself, bringing about a new mode of understanding photographs: repicturing. First taught in a series of photohistories produced during the Occupation, this mode deployed the contemporary snapshot as a mental gateway to remembered, often, nonphotographic, pictures of the past. When Parisians took to the streets during the city’s Liberation in 1944, such pictures appeared in real life in the form of the barricades that symbolized revolution. After the Liberation, the Musée Carnavalet collected and exhibited photos of these recent events. They also circulated in books and pamphlets as both the most objective and most emotionally resonant evidence of the past and helped mythologize the Liberation and the French Resistance during World War II.

This article surveys all the contributions in ethics on these pages over the past eighty years and is divided into four historical parts: the first three years; the years from 1943 to 1964; the years Richard McCormick wrote from 1964 to 1984; and the years beyond McCormick. It surveys a period from neo-Scholastic manualism at the eve of World War II to the contemporary era, where methods for attaining moral objectivity are complex. This survey notes shifts in theological method, the movement of the center from the personal to the social, the transition from an exclusively clerical authorship to a much broader array of authors, and a shift in readership from priest confessors to professional theologians.

Juvenile crime has increased considerably in the past decade. The Police Federation and the Justices' Clerks' Society blame the Children and Young Persons Act 1969 and want the law changed for several reasons. The British Association of Social Workers, however, disagrees. In view of possible changes in the near future, the development of the 1969 Act is traced from World War II with comments on the social conditions then existing. The results of the legislature are discussed with particular reference to Certificates of Unruliness, accommodation difficulties and the role of psychiatry at the present time.

A REVIEW OF THE FALL 1987 COLLOQUIA SPONSORED BY NEW YORK UNIVERSITY’S INSTITUTE OF FRENCH STUDIES In the past twenty to thirty years, the conception of history in both France and America has changed considerably. The territory covered by the discipline has broadened to encompass elements of various social sciences, such as anthropology and sociology. In the Fall of 1987, four colloquia at New York University’s Institute of French Studies focused on various facets of French history and its study. Louis Bergeron and Jacques Revel both discussed some of the effects of the expansion of the concept of history on their discipline. Tony Judt examined the French Left in the context of European socialist thought after World War II, demonstrating how “historical” analysis is now being applied to periods as recent as 1945-1975. Finally, Charles Tilly described the writing of his latest book, The Contentious French, offering an example of current analytical methods in social history.

Analyses of Thai political economy since World War II have sought to define the stages of Thai social evolution from earliest times to the present and to determine whether or not the Bowring Treaty of 1855 and the 1932 coup mark changes in the social formation and/or the mode of production. Over the past decade, as a consequence of political change in the mid-1970s, a new generation of historians has rejuvenated Marxist methodology, using it to pry the chronicles and archives away from royalist and nationalist myth-making concerns, to dismantle the court-centered historiography, and to erect a new historical paradigm for the late twentieth century.

With the increasing medialization of cultural memory regardingWorld War II and the Holocaust, cinematic texts become significantcomponents of our remembrance. Not only videotaped witness testimoniesbut also documentaries and fictional films make up the growingbody of visual material that tells of the wartime past and the waywe remember it. Today, the great majority of the filmmakers depictingthe Holocaust on screen—as well as their audiences—belong tothe so-called second and third generations. Born too late to have witnessedthe murder of Europe’s Jews, these film directors nonethelessdeclare a very strong personal connection to the past they neverknew. Their renditions of this past is, as Marianne Hirsch argues,driven by the “postmemory,” a type of memory in which the connectionto its object or source is mediated not through recollectionbut rather through imagination and creation.
