scholarly journals Influence of Demographic Factors on Security and Privacy Concerns in Mobile Payments

Mobile payment systems are rapidly surpassing traditional payment options due to their ease of use and efficiency. Their convenience, however, raises the question – how secure are these systems? There is a great deal of insecurity and risk for consumers as mobile payments involve a lot of financial information. Past research indicates that when involved in online activities and e-payments, consumers are specifically concerned about privacy and security. This study aims to understand influence of demographic variables on security and privacy concerns of consumers by conducting a survey of 1087 respondents in 4 major cities of the state of Gujarat, India. The results indicate that demographic variables age, occupation, annual income and city have significant relationship with security and privacy concerns of consumers towards mobile payments. The findings of this study can benefit mobile service providers, system developers and m-payment vendors to have an actionable segmentation of different target groups based on demographic variables. Practitioners can formulate relevant strategies to address security and privacy concerns which will ultimately facilitate adoption of mobile payment systems.

Merchant adoption of mobile payments is facilitating new business models and changing the way merchants run their brick and mortar businesses. Despite the advantages of mobile payment adoption to the merchant, they still hesitate to adopt mobile payments. Thus, the study seeks to explore qualitatively through a case study the enablers and inhibitors to merchant adoption of mobile payments. The study identified that merchants are adopting mobile payments to facilitate new business models, to promote the disintermediation of traditional intermediaries, to offer different possibilities of growing their businesses, and to reduce transaction costs. Even though merchants believe that mobile payments adoption and use improve operational efficiency to their businesses, there are instances of fraud, particularly in the peer-to-peer transfer sector, data breaches, data security, and privacy concerns. Therefore, it is imperative for service providers of mobile payments to enhance technological issues regarding privacy protection that could enhance trust towards mobile payment adoption.

Payments are an inherent element of economic activity (León and Ortega 2018). However, the evolution of payment instruments and the way individuals and businesses make daily payments has undergone enormous change in human history, particularly due to main innovations in payment systems in last decades (Gandhi 2016). The last innovation in payment system concerns mobile payment. The development of mobile payments market can have a positive impact on economic growth (Leon and Rodriguez 2012). Although the Polish market of mobile payments is in the initial phase of development, it is one of the pioneering and leading in Europe and globally. The main purpose of this article is to analyze, which feature (convenience, speed, availability, ease of use, safety) of mobile payments could be the most important for users from Poland.

Although, they are convenient, quick and easy but there is not still enough evidence on how successful this practice is. In Nanjing, China, consumer intention to use mobile payment is still questionable and remains as a skeptical consideration. This study discussed about the impact of consumers’ attitude towards mobile payment feasibility in Malaysia. The research focused on three research objectives which are; (1) to identify the consumers’ concerns that influencing the mobile payments feasibility in Malaysia, (2) to investigate the relationships between perceived security, payment culture, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, and (3) to identify the main consumers’ concern that influencing the mobile payment feasibility in Malaysia. In this research, the researcher carried out a survey among the young public to access the performance of mobile payment services available in Malaysia. Besides, the direct opinion from the consumers is able to enhance the insight of the service providers. In conclusion, mobile payment feasibility is important to realise Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) strategy which is Malaysia becomes a cashless society by 2050.

AbstractSmart Home technologies have the potential to increase the quality of life, home security and facilitate elderly care. Therefore, they require access to a plethora of data about the users’ homes and private lives. Resulting security and privacy concerns form a relevant barrier to adopting this promising technology. Aiming to support end users’ informed decision-making through addressing the concerns we first conducted semi-structured interviews with 42 potential and little-experienced Smart Home users. Their diverse concerns were clustered into four themes that center around attacks on Smart Home data and devices, the perceived loss of control, the trade-off between functionality and security, and user-centric concerns as compared to concerns on a societal level. Second, we discuss measures to address the four themes from an interdisciplinary perspective. The paper concludes with recommendations for addressing user concerns and for supporting developers in designing user-centered Smart Home technologies.

<p>Mobile payment has relative advantages compared to other payment methods, thus providing benefits for both consumers and the society. This study attempts to examine factors influencing consumer intention to use mobile payment services. Survey data are used to investigate the impact of consumers’ perceptions of mobile payment services and social influence on use intention. Empirical evidence from 489 Vietnamese consumers confirms a significant relationship between the factors and behavioral intention, and reveals that perceived trust is the strongest predictor of intention to use mobile payment services followed by perceived ease of use, perceived enjoyment, perceived behavioral control, perceived usefulness and subjective norm, respectively. The results contribute to the evolving literature, and suggest that mobile payment service providers should particularly focus on building up consumer trust, and making their services clear, understandable and easy to use. Future research directions for extending this study are also discussed.</p>

This research extended the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with perceived trust and perceived risks (security and privacy concerns) constructs to identify the impact of these factors on Jordanian users’ intentions to adopt mobile commerce (m-commerce). An empirical test was used utilizing 132 responses from students in two public universities in Jordan. Results indicated that perceived trust, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use are major influencers of mobile commerce adoption. On the other hand, perceived risk factors (security and privacy concerns) were not significant in this relation. Discussion, conclusion and future work are stated at the end of this paper.

The advent of online social networks (OSN) has transformed a common passive reader into a content contributor. It has allowed users to share information and exchange opinions, and also express themselves in online virtual communities to interact with other users of similar interests. However, OSN have turned the social sphere of users into the commercial sphere. This should create a privacy and security issue for OSN users. OSN service providers collect the private and sensitive data of their customers that can be misused by data collectors, third parties, or by unauthorized users. In this paper, common security and privacy issues are explained along with recommendations to OSN users to protect themselves from these issues whenever they use social media.

<p>The mobile industry in recent years has been growing at a speedy pace where the use of cell phone is no longer limited to conventional usage like the voice communication, but has enriched the customer experiences with mobile internet services and other value added services. Along with the growing mobile industry, technology behind it is also changing accordingly. However, the user acceptance of technology depends on various factors that lead to either user acceptance or rejection. This study thus aims to identify the major determining factors that influence the user to use the 3G mobile internet and examines the interrelation among the determinants along with effect of the demographic variable limited to Kathmandu Valley users. The conceptual framework of this study is based on the extended version of Davis (1989)’s technology acceptance model using variables social influence, price perception, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude to use and behavior intention. The primary survey is conducted using a set of questionnaire, which produced 180 valid responses from the mobile users in Kathmandu Valley. The reliability of the data from questionnaire is verified with factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha. The result shows that social influence has significant influence on perceived ease of use while it has no significant influence on perceived usefulness. Price perception, on the other hand, influences the perceived usefulness. Similarly, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use influence the attitude of use, which finally influences the behavioral intention. Along with this, social influence is also found to be the extended factors that can influence the attitude of the users, which in turn affects the behavioral intention. Demographic variables, however in this study, have shown no significant influence on the behavioral intentions. On the whole, the usage of 3G mobile internet service is not seen to be satisfying from the study. The major reasons as surveyed from the users themselves for this lower utilization seems to be higher data costs, presence of cheaper alternatives for internet like Wi-Fi internet, quick drainage of battery and slow mobile internet service provided by the mobile service providers. Thus, for mobile service providers, internet service providers are their direct competitors for 3G mobile internet services.
